Please define "assault weapon" for this conversation, because I'd wager that you don't really know what that means.

AR-15 is an assault weapon.

I asked for a definition, not an example.  What about an AR-15 makes it into an assult weapon?  What about an assault weapon makes it a different kind of weapon than, for example, a hunting rifle?
Strictly speaking, an AR-15 is not an assault weapon as it is not capable of fully automatic fire. That makes an AR-15 a toy version of an assault rifle.

Can you name these 3 continents?

Africa, Europe, Central America. also the Caribbean

P.S. that is NOT a hunting rifle above. It was developed by Ruger as a military weapon to kill people.

I'm guessing this thread is active because of the nut in Colorado. What a sad event. The only thing that could have made a difference is if the audience had guns. That particular theater did not allow people to protect themselves and obviously had no way to protect their customers.
I am checking local theaters where I live so that I never make the mistake of patronizing such a place. If they allowed CC weapons, that guy would have never been able to kill so many. Why do you think these whackos choose schools and such? Because they are safe zones for mass murder.  Undecided

That's silly. Smoke bombs, panic, cross fire - many more would die.

No way. I shoot 3 times a week. I would have killed him.
I have been shot at by trained soldiers on three continents. Ask them.

Food kills far more people than guns.
Alcohol kills far more people than guns.
Cars kills far more people than guns.
I could go on.
Why are we allowing people to eat, drink, drive, swim, etc. ? Is it just because those are things you do? What are YOU doing that should be banned?

Statistics wise you're wrong:

USA, per 100,000:

firearm deaths: 10.27
traffic related: 12.3
alcohol related (except traffic): 8.03
food related: 1.63

well, food should include all deaths from obesity. Firearms/traffic should not include suicide. And alcohol should include long term disease.
The point is why are we picking this one risk? Why not the many more serious problems.?

8187  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is my bitcoin wallet on MY local computer? on: July 19, 2012, 07:53:47 PM
Not to confuse you, but technically the bitcoins are not stored on your computer, rather the encryption keys that allow you to spend the coins on the bitcoin network. But for practical purposes you can think of your wallet file containing your coins.
There are myriad ways to keep your bitcoins secure. You should have a plan to backup and hide your wallet.dat file. as mentioned above, if you lose that file you have lost your coins forever. It can be as simple as making a copy of that file and saving it on a few USB sticks. I keep three copies of my larger wallet. One in a safe deposit box, one in a safe at home, and one encrypted and hidden on the internet.
8188  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why compared to the dollar? on: July 19, 2012, 07:41:39 PM
Isn't the whole idea behind bitcoin not affiliating itself with regular money as we know it? I see so many comparisons to btc/usd. If people are only interested in what a btc is worth compared to an American dollar then what is the idea behind btc? Why even compare a bitcoin to the dollar? Can't it just be itself and worth what people would make it worth? I know I'm not explaining myself correctly probably. Like what is the real benefit of bitcoin over the dollar? It is not backed or insured....is it just the "idea" of having an underground money? It is not like I can go out food shopping and pay with bitcoin. I'm just curious...what people have to say.

For me BTC is superior to paypal, western union, credit cards, etc... I can buy anything from anyone anywhere. I don't need to know there name, nor do they need to know mine. They could be in China or Brazil or whatever.
Compare that to the sunglasses I just bought with a credit card. I had to give my identity to a 17yr. old, who even asked for my phone number. Screw that.
Bitcoins are cash you can send over the internet and there is nothing else like it. It's just a better idea.
8189  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin price skyrocket? on: July 19, 2012, 07:34:13 PM
Unlike most currencies, bitcoin prices rise and fall with demand. The supply is fixed and no government can print extra coins to fix a budget.  Right now demand is high and the supply is expected to be halved late this year. That translates to increased value.
Your right that that is a huge jump.     Welcome to bitcoin. Cool
8190  Economy / Speculation / Re: [POLL] when will the panic buying begin? on: July 19, 2012, 07:26:41 PM

Wow, he must be good to only die after 40hrs. When I've played I get killed like every 5 mins.  [/tasteless]
8192  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitinstant no credit > 2 hours on: July 18, 2012, 07:42:49 PM
On a related note, I noticed a new sign at my local Western Union. It said that deposits made after 4pm may not post until the next day. So I did a bitinstant deposit at 5pm to see what would happen and it posted right away.
8193  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: High Altitude and Below Water Hamster Habitats, accepting donations! on: July 18, 2012, 07:36:52 PM
At last...finally we have hamsters in the air.

I have told people my whole life that this would one day happen...they did not believe me.

8194  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Done something nice today? Sorry, someone else did that! on: July 18, 2012, 06:01:21 PM
That's why no one should respect the constitution of the United States. It's a bunch of "we the people" fascist
 stuff.  Roll Eyes

Fascism is where the government and business elites rule cooperatively. Does that sound like Obama? You can't have it both ways, except maybe in your own head. You really need to look up definitions folks. In and English dictionary it would say: "Fascist -See republican party."
8195  Other / Off-topic / Re: Cycler Investment program on: July 18, 2012, 04:28:26 PM
I'm not clear on how your making a profit. Are you expecting the value of BTC to increase more than your payout?

Cheers
8196  Economy / Economics / Re: Why don't we just create backing for Bitcoin? on: July 18, 2012, 04:07:26 PM
Does gold need backing? And when we "back" money with gold, all we do is say those pieces of paper are better now because they are backed by shinny rocks. It's just a game of illusions really.
8197  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin London Conference 2012 on: July 18, 2012, 04:04:19 PM
Woah! I may be visiting a mate in London about the time of this conference. If so, I'm definitely going.

Which country did you have in mind? There are some basket cases that may welcome us as benevolent overlords.

Thanks Stephen! I forgot that I had a baseball game to attend last night. I will crunch those numbers together when I have a moment.
