8381  Economy / Services / Re: [4BTC] Assemble a PirateBox for me and send it to me on: June 01, 2012, 01:53:15 PM
My Pirate box came today. I will try to find time to work on it this weekend. The next step it to ssh into the box and begin modding. This guide is what I am going to use.
http://piratebox.aod-rpg.de/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=modification_list

It did not come with a battery pack, not sure why? A trip to Radio Shack should solve that. Here is what it looks like.

Thanks Garr255  Smiley

You mean those people who ride around in horse driven carts, and build their houses without electricity or any technology whatsoever? I'm sure there's heaps of them posting on this internet forum lol

Brother Zebadiah, do you take bitcoins from the English?  Grin

After testing I am going to mod the interface to make my rescue version. How is this for a logo?

I just bought one of these from Garr255. I cant wait to see what I can do with it in a rescue environment.  It might also be a good way to quickly set up a file sharing link for the many wifi devices at our surge tent.

That is the best kind of engineer. Not only do you get to build cool stuff, but you get to blow cool stuff up. hooah

my brother is an airborne engineer (rough terrain) at ft bragg. demolition happens to be his specialty.
Sweet MOS  Cool
I had a friend who was a combat engineer. But frankly, he was not a very "squared away" solider. lol

Just to clarify this is a seriously joking thread.... I'm very curious as to What happens if there is mass solar flare that wipes out the data of every computer? Who cares about the banks(hehe) right? What about Meh Bitcoinz!? So we should find some ways to back it up (that are practical) in the event this happens. Keep on throwing out crazy idears!
But if you think about it, anything that bad would be the end of civilization. Bitcoins, dollars, gold,... anything but food will be useless.

Why would you think that? AFAIK there would only be an affect on electronic/magnetic sensitive devices.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_flare#Hazards
I was assuming that atomic EMPs wipe out most of the worlds electronics. That would likely destroy the Internet for at least years, maybe forever. I guess in the example of a solar flare it would just be an interruption though.

And @molecular..
Damn! I did mean alpaca! Or most correctly an Alblocka.

8390  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Should I use the wallet app? on: May 27, 2012, 04:54:14 PM
Hi MarryP,
I do not share this opinion about the client. There are some safety concerns, as there would be with any software designed to hold money. However turning your BTC over to some website is not a good mitigation strategy.
You may consider keeping most of your bitcoin in a standard client wallet stored on a USB stick. Then keep the few coins you may spend in an online wallet. Sort of like a checking vs. savings account.
8391  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What do you use Bitcoins for? on: May 27, 2012, 04:46:09 PM
this is expanding by the daily, i hope bitinstant manage to break through

I found their web site (Bitinstant), but am not sure what to make of it.  Can I use my Chase Bank account to buy bitcoins through them?
Yes. set up an account account at Mt. Gox or one of the other "send to" options. (unless you already have).

Follow the instructions on bitinstant. select major bank and print the slip your are given.
You then have 3 days to go into your bank and transfer the money. Once you have it should take only mins. to go through.

This team at Stanford have encoded a single bit into DNA that is inherited by the bacteria's descendants:

Ok, one bit does not a blockchain make but they hope to be able to store a whole byte in another decade.

Let's make a GMO llama with the blockchain in his DNA! And, can we name him Satoshi? Please!

I was initially excited at the prospect of buying bitcoins at walmart, but if an ID is required, my enthusiasm is dampened.

Do all these CVS/walmart/7-11 type services require ID?

Does bitinstant accept cash-in-the-mail or money orders?

I did my transfer via western union and showed no ID.

I have some soft armor that should stop a handgun. But I thInk of a vest as bettering your odds rather than saving your life.

We're both on the same page. I don't aim for center mass if you know what I mean.
I never really thought about facing an armored threat in a conceal carry setting before. I would shoot center mass. Hmmm. This is also not good training for zombi outbreaks.  Undecided
The vest was for some work abroad, I have not worn it in the US.

You could buy some followers. Someone here had them for sale by the thousands.
hmmmm ok ok ... but who?
If you know someone says
thank you Wink
It was months ago and I'm afraid I don't remember who it was here. I recall the price being reasonable however. You could try making a [WTB] add in the "goods" section of these forums.
8399  Economy / Goods / Re: Come in and Trade Ammo or Talk about Guns! on: May 26, 2012, 11:57:48 AM
the only thing thats going to set a round off is a precise strike from a hammer, etc.

Then what's a Cookoff?
I have also seen "cookoff" used to refer to a delayed detonation of the primer. Like say your ammo was a little damp. When the primer is struck, it could smolder a moment before igniting the charge.
To a grenadier cooking off means droping the spoon then waiting a moment before tossing.
