Well what is the highest price do people think monero could become. Does anyone think it could possibly hit 5k or 10k or even more?

So transaction fees were about 4 dollars or so when the price was 500.

That was just for lazy/ignorant/generous/impatient/urgent people.  It barely topped a dollar for anyone willing to push (literally) one or two buttons and risk (small risk) <4 minutes vs <2 to confirm. So I would multiply your findings by 4...

note:  I've been here since early 2014, and I did (guessing) more transactions in the last 6 months than the 3 prior years combined.  I paid a tick over a dollar once, and something like $60 once when I fucked up on margin and was desperate to cut every second possible from the confirmation time by guaranteeing the next block.

Thanks. I was just trying to put forward a framework for how to conceptualize the question. But if someone wanted to actually use my silly back of the napkin math your addendum would be helpful.

Well what is the highest price do people think monero could become. Does anyone think it could possibly hit 5k or 10k or even more?

So transaction fees were about 4 dollars or so when the price was 500. I suspect that around about a 4 dollar transaction fee is as much as the market will sustain. Bitcoin has managed to push higher but bitcoin is special. It is a powerful brand. So lets just say 4 dollars is about what someone is willing to pay in transaction fee for an altcoin and it was 4 dollars at 500 dollars. Bullet proofs will bring probably an 85% space savings. 80% on 2 output transactions but more space savings on transactions with more outputs so we need to increase it a bit above 80% to account for that. So with an 85% space savings and a 4 dollar transaction fee the price would be 6.6 times higher than 500. 500*6.6=3300.

So this is some super rough math but atleast it gives an idea of how to begin to approach this problem. Scalability is the limiting factor for cryptocurrencies right now and transaction fees are the measure of scalability (I know also centralization vs decentralization plays a role too but never the less). They are a reflection of the current progress in scaling technologies. The prices cant go higher until more and better scaling solutions are developed.

*edit*
Unless, as generalizethis points out, it starts getting valued as a tax haven type of reserve asset and not as a currency. Then people might be willing to deal with huge transaction fees. In which case the sky is the limit.

Is Monero still a good buy now because of the prices?

I don't understand when people ask this question. The lower the price the better the buy. It's twice as good of a buy as it was when it was twice the price.

What is a pool though? just need the pool software and you can run one. So banning people is irrelevant, aside of inconvenience or more likely they don't want the criminal association.

There's more to a pool than just software, though.  You need to get people to mine with you.
So who here thinks the bot-herders are going to set up a pool of their own?
I mean, it's possible.  There are probably enough bot-herds to make a pool.  But is herding bot-herders like herding cats?

If you are a bot herder you can just use your own pool.  I am sure they set them up.

Yea but I bet even 10,000 iot devices or some very large number like that probably isn't enough to win enough blocks to feel comfortable operating without a pool.
865  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: February 05, 2018, 05:21:48 PM
A coin that is untraceable will never be adopted by governments or major corporations. Without some sort of trace to the original buyer, banks will never have anything to do with companies who accept anonymous transactions. That is just common sense. I believe Monero is here to stay but its only going to be prioritized by people who don't want to be traced.

Are you kidding? Monero is a alphabet soup black budget ops dream. Also a corrupt politician's dream. Also an oligarch's tax haven dream. It will find massive widespread adoption at various levels in the state and its connected cronies. Right now politicians and state actors push around budgets in the trillions, engage in massive corruption with said funds, only to reaping rewards in the single or double digit millions. That's an effective capture rate of as low as 0.001% in some cases. These people are going to be able to use monero and technologies like it to capture a much much larger share of the corruption that they participate in. They are going to LOVE monero.

I seen reports today that exploit malware is mining Monero covertly? Any one else know about this?

There is tons of this going on. It might be the vast majority of monero's hashrate for all we know. It isn't news.
867  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: February 04, 2018, 04:28:30 PM
How would I find out if a botnet is mining on my computer?
I run galliumos (linux distro).

Wireshark packet analysis? Or maybe catalog and make sure you know the purpose and function of all of the running processes in top? I bet you could even write a script to filter out all the processes that you know what they do and only report ones you haven't cataloged yet.
868  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: February 04, 2018, 04:24:36 PM
Been reading up on XMR and want to get into privacy for 2018. Like XMR because it's already established and should have stable/steady growth, which will be good for where it'll fit in my portfolio.

Are there any potential developments for big spikes coming in 2018? My understanding is that Monero is basically deployed as a working product and upcoming developments would be mostly just enhancements. Any chance at partnerships or any newsworthy moments? Or is XMR just a slow and steady riser?

Bullet proofs come in 2018. Bullet proofs will see a space savings/fee reduction of ~80% on standard 2 output transactions but much higher space savings on transactions with more than 2 outputs. After that the next big development will probably be kovri. I don't know if we can expect to see kovri on main net in 2018 though. The focus of the monero project is on steady improvement of the core product rather than flashy new "me too" features.

Hi guys! I was not here for a long time, a year or so. I am just feeling WTF. Look at Monero mining pool hashrate chart:

http://minexmr.com/pools.html

The hashrate increases dramatically in few days, while Monero price has fallen down a lot.

But the most terrifying thing is that 70% of 900MH/s are... UNKNOWN.

Is this real apocalypse of Monero? Look, 70% is much more than 51%.

It's probably just botnets. There is almost no reason for a botnet operator to mine anything other than monero so probably 70-90% of all botnet miners are mining monero. Also botnet operators are moving away from ransom-ware and into mining instead because it tends to be more profitable. A lot of ransom-ware attacks go unpaid and its a one time deal even if they do pay, where as a compromised computer or IOT device can silently mine monero indefinitely supplying a passive reliable revenue stream. It's reasonable to expect the might of the worlds botnet armies to outpace legitimate miners when they are all piling head first onto our little old project.

Can you open an account at a better bank?
And then make a point of letting WF know exactly why you're closing your account...  maybe toss in a reminder of how they've recently been engaging in a prolonged and deliberate fraud on their own customers by opening phony accounts in their names.  Send a letter to the corporate headquarters.

I already have several accounts at several banks and a credit union. After this is all over I'm closing all of my wells fargo accounts and using a local credit union that I like.

Sickening.  You use Conbase and Wells Fargo because...?  I mean coinbase. and fucking wells fargo.  Man.  I suppose you could insert <any*bank> for similar disgust.  Coinbase blacklisted coins in ?2013?  That was their end as far as I'm concerned, and bitcoin's too.  Thankfully I didn't have long to wait for a superior option.  So far no issue other than stupid delays from the banking end, but that can change... Undecided

What is the alternative to coinbase? I couldn't find any other exchanges in the us that would allow me to withdraw fiat.
871  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Wells fargo refused to wire transfer my money because "it came from coinbase". on: February 03, 2018, 03:48:40 AM
Wtf that's crazy... And it shows exactly what the flaws of traditional centralised banking is. Not to go on a rant, but, honestly, if you don't have fungibility in your currency then that currency is just no good.

Why the hell would they limit your ability to wire funds, but not write checks? That doesn't make sense to me. BTW, are you able to withdraw cash from ATMs still? If yes then you can probably avoid the week long wait.

Bitcoin is fungible, and there are cryptos like monero that are even more fungible because there is no tracing of where the funds came from.

Guess the entire fiat sector is scared of cryptos becoming mainstream, though.

Well I haven't actually seen the check clear yet so hopefully I can still write checks. The lady I talked to didn't seem like she was very knowledgeable. She said checks would still work fine but I'm not confident she has any idea what shes talking about.

No I don't think an ATM is going to help. This wire transfer was to pay for a real estate deal. That would take a LONG time 300 dollars at a time.

It's funny. If this really is them reacting to being out competed by the crypto sector, they respond by showing how and why they are being out competed.

But the fact that they allow you to write checks instead makes it look like they want to simply inconvenience you. The crazy part is that they control and decide your financial life. You have cleared funds on your account. Why would they restrict you from wiring that money to other banks?

I don't know but it just reminds me why what we are doing here is so important.
872  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: February 03, 2018, 02:41:02 AM
So if anyone needs any more motivation to bet against the banking system by buying crypto today wells fargo refused to wire transfer my money because "it came from coinbase". I asked how long would I have to wait they said it wasn't a matter of waiting. I can never wire transfer that money. That's really what they told me. The slimy fucks.
873  Economy / Service Discussion / Wells fargo refused to wire transfer my money because "it came from coinbase". on: February 03, 2018, 02:33:35 AM
I went into my local wells fargo branch today to do a wire transfer of funds from my checking account but they refused to wire my money on the grounds that "they have a policy against wiring funds that come from coinbase". Apparently all USD is equal but some USD is more equal than other USD. They said I can still write a check using the money just no wire transfers. Oh thank you massa... Hopefully it's true... I'm attempting to use a check written from wells fargo over to my credit union and then do the wire transfer from there. But of course that's going to take an effing week because the legacy banking system is a god damned disgrace.

I cant be too mad. I knew they were this bad. Part of the reason I invested in crypto so long ago is precisely because I knew how awful they were and I was right and made a lot of money betting against them. If they weren't this terrible I never would have had the success that I have. The last laugh belongs to me.

Thoughts for your floor?

180?
130?

Surely not lower than 80usd?

RSI looks to be approaching a bottom indicator on various scales.

What is REALLY worrying me is the lack of trolls... THAT is a TRUE worrying indicator! No one is trying to make us sell...

Lack of trolls here is not a good sign, nope - but right now it's all about the mothership. BTC needs to find its bottom (and preferably fast!).

Maybe I'll just have to take one for the team and start trolling?

Anyone who owns monero is a turtle molester.
875  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: February 02, 2018, 12:47:50 AM
What's happening now? All the Crypto currency has gone into disgrace. And our coin Monero did not remain indifferent. Too very much sagged. Does anyone have an opinion on this? Time to buy or worth the wait?

Always better to buy when its cheaper than when its more expensive but I would wait for a double digit price before blowing the very last of my dry powder.
876  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: February 02, 2018, 12:42:24 AM
How do multisig xmr txs work? Do the people in the escrow know each others amounts being paid for a multisig spend? Ie a->b->c is there a way to not have c know how much a is getting or even who a is?

It works a lot like a shamir secret sharing scheme. Here you go watch this https://youtu.be/FRdGe9kNBRI?t=20m48s
877  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: January 31, 2018, 05:09:56 PM
still so much negativity everywhere about bitcoin price... i hope the market can go north again during the first 6 months of this year. if not , i guess we wont see 1000 this year

There was an article on zerohedge this morning about how robinhood has more than a million people on their waiting list to use their soon to be crypto trading platform. It's looking like this could be almost another coinbase worth of fresh capital coming into the sector.
878  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: January 31, 2018, 12:33:18 AM
People calling 267 failing are weird.

Its comfortably above any kind of hold/sell level of the past. And we been around that to 28 for weeks.

I feel so unworried, I don't get it.

Someone mentioned this before and it was eyeopening for me. It's all about what price you bought in at. You and I glob probably bought in at single or double digit prices. It's easy for us to just sit back, relax and ignore the screaming children. But its different for people who paid 300 400 or heaven forbid almost 500 dollars.
879  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: January 29, 2018, 01:50:57 AM
Something that could be integrated into the inexpensive open source Monero hardware wallet?

I'm not sure. I think it somewhat relies on a trustworthy central service provider. Basically they need to be making the chips in a physically secure way then providing an interface on the hardware for third parties to verify that the device was manufactured by them. If I'm understanding it all correctly.
880  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: January 28, 2018, 11:31:08 PM
This was one of the most exciting projects in the bitcoin space a couple of years ago then it just died. http://www.othercoin.com/OtherCoin.pdf

Quote
OtherCoin is an off-chain Bitcoin payment system based on a tamper-resistant smartcard in microSD form factor. OtherCoin works by securely generating, storing and transmitting Bitcoin private keys between parties. Private keys are never revealed to either the sender or the receiver, they can either be used directly in the Bitcoin protocol to sign transactions or securely transmitted to another OtherCoin user. Each OtherCoin smartcard guarantees that the key has either been securely generated by itself or has been received over a secure channel from a similar OtherCoin, with the same restrictions.

I haven't heard anyone talk about it in ages. I think it was a little before it's time. Bitcoin hadn't run into its scaling issues yet and hadn't become generally well known yet either. But maybe it's time has come?

FP specifically has put forward the idea of attacking scaling at all levels and it seems to me that this is a potentially very practical and powerful scaling vector. Additionally it would make many of moneros transactions entirely off chain. This has great implications for privacy. With our funding model we could probably raise the funds necessary to fund the development of some sort of open source application specific hardware device for this sort of thing if a knowledgeable hardware guy were to avail himself.

Mostly I just thought it would be cool if I could kick off a discussion about this proposal. Get it back in the public consciousness. More specifically into the Monero community consciousness. What are your thoughts dear reader?

Bump I guess since no one seemed to have noticed it last time. This particular way of scaling at the low end could be a HUGE part of the solution to scaling.
