944  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 11, 2020, 06:51:44 PM
In just 4 yrs the reward will be BTC3.125 per block
plot twist, a rare bug causes the 3rd halving to become a quartering down to 3.125 btc instead of 6.25 btc.

Iniatially price dumps dramatically until it's figured out bug is rare and oneoff issue only. Then price goes stratospheric as supply shock becomes absorbed.

nah no bugs please, don't want to mess with credibility

This has got to be miners selling up before the halving surely?
Let them dump and we can move on to new highs.
Looking forward to the 100k party hatters.

I tend to agree, think about it, if you're a miner your profits are about to literally get cut in half. Some of your assets become unprofitable the second block 630.000 is mined, old inefficient miners would be costing you money so you have to run around and take them offline ASAP. But you still have your sunk costs, datacenter, and electric contract in place so you'd need to replace old equipment with more efficient miners, but good luck raising capital and finding investors during pandemic where everyone is deleveraging, so your only option is to unload whatever stash you managed to save up to keep the lights on in your farm.

Faketoshi had about BTC50 on Gox. Yep, definitely sounds like a creator of BTC who owns BTC1MM

Isn't it weird how all the old bears have slowly faded into obscurity.
People like Roach, Proudhon, stofl and the like.
I guess good old bitcoin proved them wrong eventually.
Go Bitcoin Go.

I was planning on filling all my petrol cans today to take advantage of the low petrol prices, glad I didn't have time. It's gonna be interesting to se what the petrol prices will be the coming days.
Nothing.
Petrol prices are based on Jun future that's now trading at 22 USD.
Plus taxes and other non-oli related costs reduce price volatility.
So don't expect many nice surprises here.

I don't really understand any of this. Who, if anyone, can buy oil at those extremely low and even negative prices? What does it mean?

One oil future contract obligates the buyer/holder to buy 1000 barrels of oil for delivery during the month of May. That is, whoever holds it at the end of the trading period.

The oil producer creates the contracts and people trade them. The producer might have written the contract at $20 per barrel last month to lock in the price. Since then, the contracts have been traded around, the producer already pocketed the $20 per barrel though.

The person holding the contract today, had to pay someone to unload it (negative price) because they don't have the ability to take delivery. The producers doesn't care who takes delivery, they already got paid when they wrote the contract. I guess they could have bought their own contracts and delivered to themselves at a profit but that would require them to shut down production which is expensive.

The traders effectively paid someone $40,000 per 1000 barrel contract to get it off their account. Not including whatever they lost on the way down.

Yep that ^ each contract is for 1000 barrels. You buy it, and you have to take delivery of it in May or be in default

Oil at $0.01. So basically the entire population could buy a barrel, HODL in the backyard and make a 100-1,000x+ killing in a short period of time?

Pass me 20 barrels please Smiley

Try -$40 for WTI May futures

Barrel of oil equivalent = 6.1178632×109 J
Antminer S17+ 70TH/s rated @ 40J/TH

 6.1178632×109 J/bbl x 600 bbl = 3,670,717,926,540 J

 3670717926540 J / 40J/TH = 91,767,948,163.5 TH

How many bitcoin can I mine in 91,767,948,163.5 TH?

The probability that any give hash will lead to a valid block is 1/(232D), where D is difficulty
 currently D = 13,912,524,048,946

 So, 91,767,948,163.5x1012H x 1/(23213,912,524,048,946)/Block

 = 1.5357666489943172022545931579071 Blocks (currently 12.5BTC/Block)

 = 19.197083112428965028182414473839 BTC

Wow.  I thought it would have been much more.
 We're killing the planet!!

We're about to mine BTC900/day so that's 46.8821223895886 barrels per day, that's probably less than heating costs for one bank

1) alts kind of hanging on with a kind of symmetry to bitcoin .. .but what the fuck can we do about that?  the situation with alts and the various dumbfucks buying or promoting that crap "is what it is".

Alts are the "lungs" of bitcoin.

I was thinking more like an anus, if you touch them you're sure to get shit all over yourself

UK Chancellor just said self employed people will get up to 80% of their earnings but we have to wait until June.
It’ll be a 3 month pay out back dated to now so 3 x 80% what you earn.

It’s a good thing I have a couple of streams of income.

What would, for example a self employed electrician do who isn’t getting any jobs now. ‘Don’t worry, we’ll pay you in June’.

All this whilst teachers are off work until September on 80-100% pay. Farcical by the UK Government.

Chancellor on the brink of another bailout?

Probably.

Thousands of lower earning self employed people aren’t going to be able to afford to live very soon.
May be we will survive from Corona but very hard from these tactics as most of peoples will think about suicide as they cannor afford to live on this planet.

I cannot afford my standard of living with my 75" flat screen! Good bye cruel world!

*First World problems?

No, supply is set in algorithm, and demand couldn't care less about current difficulty level.
