When we updated the last version the creator of the coin wanted to add in the possibility of having a % taken for something if we ever needed it or if the community wanted to use to raise money for charity or maybe people who cant afford their medication. You can clearly see its commented out and is not being used.

We at first wanted to raise money for research and charity but we never implemented it and now we have in the chance we use it one day.

...Soooo... basically it's a forced tribute from all potcoin users worldwide, to XYZ beneficiary whenever the 'owner' decided to flip the switch?

Why not comment in there what its future use was?

Why not add this into the git comments/explanation?

Why not simply have made it a feature within the wallet where the user could specify a percentage, a destination address, and an 'opt-in' switch?

Instead, this was slid under the door.

Not to mention, there's no easy way for folks to tell if their windows wallet has it disabled. Which is why I encourage people to check the CRC values against compiling from git source. If the CRC values vary, then there's going to be a lot of explaining to do.

Well done retro, a service to the community. Hopefully this is helpful.
543  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][POT] PotCoin Launches Today 01/21 @ 4:20 on: June 12, 2014, 12:41:53 PM
It would be hard to view it any other way without the devs talking about it, which i am sure they will. The fact that it is all open source just makes me doubt that there is anything nefarious about it.

...presuming folks were required to view the source code before using it, or that they do. Most folks, even pool ops, just hurry up and compile to keep their systems from accumulating downtime. There have been numerous opensource exploits not caught until after damage has been done. While this wasn't implemented, it's very odd to not have some description there.

Look at it this way, nobody to date has caught it. Imagine how many hundreds of thousands of potcoin could've been skimmed/stolen? Only 1 individual out of the userbase noticed this? Your point is wholly negated.

happy. There is no reason to not contribute to a good cause, or 1% donation to charity 1% goes to maintaining the coin(which is more like a premine if you really want to split hairs, but i still don't see anything intrinsically wrong with this).

"Contribute" usually carries with it the idea that it was voluntary and of your own decision making process. This code amounts to a tax/fee, if not outright theft since there's absolutely NO commentary about it in the code or online.

As long as the devs are honest with the coins. It will make or break the coin if they go this route. They will either be transparent and gain mucho respect or be shady and lose a lot of the community. Like i said, i doubt anything sinister is meant by this.

Honesty means you put the code in recently (which they did), and then announce it by explaining what it is. Or better yet, explain that you'd like to put such code in down the road and maybe make it an option set with a flag.

Instead they merely put it in without warning. That's DIShonest and pretty dumb. Another poor business move on their part.

At this point I would highly suggest that all folks using the Windows wallet cease  use of it and put your wallet into cold storage until the windows code can be verified. Easy way to do this is take the code and compile it under windows. If the CRC matches then you're safe, if the CRC doesn't match then your windows binary was modified from the source.

2 Weeks without any word from them.

No discussion of the CE issue. (has anyone asked them on their forum?)

They didn't even come back here to talk about payment options, only mentioned that the CC option should eventually work.

As that user said 2 pages back, the silence is deafening.
545  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Alpha Technology Litecoin (Scrypt) ASIC Miner on: June 11, 2014, 03:55:59 PM
Agreed that they really need to provide a bit more proof of tech before collecting balances. I'm leaning towards not paying mine and seeing what happens.

Shoot, just ask them to explain the CE issue. That's even better than asking for tech proof.

They said they would include PSU's, which they can't legally do without CE certification, which they can't acquire without providing several "off the production line" units for testing, which takes 2-12 weeks in the EU.

So they either can't provide PSU's, and will have to change design/terms once more, OR they will ship the units ilegally which will get most of them pulled by customs, OR they know the deadline is impossible and aren't talking about it.

Considering their silence on the CE matter ......

Trust me if I had the funds to repay you all I would.  I would like to buy back everything but it just isn't possible for me to do so.
If your serious I would love to meet you guys to Smiley Maybe we will see each other at a Bitcoin conference in the near future I hope.

Maybe they'd be willing to enjoy some 'services' instead? lol, who knows
547  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Alpha Technology Litecoin (Scrypt) ASIC Miner on: June 11, 2014, 03:48:45 PM
Has AT covered the CE certification issue anywhere on their forum?

If not, I would absolutely call them a scam or a failure, and they're already skirting the legal issue arena as it is with changing their terms.

If I'd have an opportunity to get my money back I'd take it, but 1 BTC simply not enough to make me care enough to get out of my chair.

I'll take his 1 btc if he doesn't want it, LOL Wink
549  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [Ann] BitAuction - BitBay Development Transfer on: June 10, 2014, 07:29:10 PM
Yeah, as Cheeky suggested, your best bet is to get all the folks who were scammed together and see who's willing to say 'yeah i got jipped'. Someone, preferably US-based, would then have to contact the police. Might even do better to hire a lawyer, but the police are free.

With the US recently defining cryptocurrency as personal property, the case would have considerable weight in court because of the USD investment. The folk(s) at hand would face more than just fines, they would face jail time, and if there are any forensic ties to other digital crimes, they will not get out of it with a plea deal. The US Justice Dept has been cranking down on digital crimes lately. If they're found guilty, they'll be hating life.

I've been encouraging many folks who feel scammed, to pursue legal action in the US. Until more folks do, more scammers will just keep flooding the markets.
550  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Alpha Technology Litecoin (Scrypt) ASIC Miner on: June 10, 2014, 04:31:54 PM
Their newsletter responses average just near 2 a month, with their responses in here being a bit more but not awesome. It's unfortunate to see how they're treating paying customers on here and on the forums.

Their biggest 3rd "red flag" IMO is when they switched their stance to "we only sell commercially" which is absolutely bogus, if not outright fraudulent as has been pointed out by several folks from the beginning.

Anyone in the UK who is serious about their money, should be seeking legal advice at this point, because of this single point.

Just got word that KNC Titan chip has finalized tape-out and is in the final process of being made and bumped into chips. This means KNC should meet its August deadline. I don't believe they'll make it in July, and there's no reason to believe they'll be 1 month late as they're simply re-using an existing hardware platform and casing, and merely need to drop chips in and test equipment prior to shipping.

I also stand corrected in thinking the Titan chips may have been nearing completion this month, instead that is likely July. The Neptune chips however are in hand and being worked with as we speak.

KNC Scrypt machine, 400MH "stock". And they'll be able to be tuned for more. Can you imagine the next generation of machines? I know KNC is going for the GH stuff. This is why I believe LTC hashrate is going to skyrocket before the end of the year, and it's going to have more exponential leaps beyond 2014. The first major Scrypt coin to have that much network security is going to take off, simply because it won't suffer from the flux many others do, more people will have faith in it.

Alpha Tec seems to be out of contact with its customers in this forum, oddly enough, especially since we're past the due date. A quick glance at their own forum shows the same. I suppose it's possible they can still get their gear out the door by their deadline, and if they do that's great, but odds are they won't, and if they do they won't have enough spare parts to provide service.

It's likely the business could go under.
552  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [GPUC] GPU Coin | Mandatory Wallet Update on: June 09, 2014, 07:05:12 PM
Just so everyone knows,  there is another coin that scammed their IPO investors and there IS a lawsuit going forth.

And I did look it up and liability protection does NOT cover fraud...

I did see a guy who looked almost exactly like the owner, driving a brand new Dodge truck the other day, in his neighborhood. Didn't think anything of it, but it does make you wonder sometimes.

It would be nice if we could see volume/usage charts of the ATM to see how they've been used, how much, etc. Also a feedback system for folks who've used it, so they can help the owners know how to evolve the ATM system.

I'm also not surprised that, to date, there is still no media brochure package to hand out to small businesses. This is the responsibility of the owner, at the least they could delegate this to a select group of individuals, but they claimed they had one already made, and then dropped the subject.

That could be a valuable tool.

KNC tapeout news

https://www.kncminer.com/news/news-93

If KNC's other developments are anything to go by they are about 90 days away from getting their chips.
If Alpha are banning people from their forums for posting this they must be in big trouble.

They way the diff is rising ROI is looking pretty slim for both these products.

Well KNC is offering more hash equipment and deals for their Batch 1 and 2 customers to help compensate in that area, from what I heard, so for KNC folks getting 1 or 2 machines more than they ordered, that's not so bad. This was brought up to Sam and Cole, and they promised more hash/gear, on their forum and through an email someone posted.

If that's the case, i absolutely wouldn't be concerned for KNC customers. Even if it's not the case, they're still getting a stout setup with a discount on their next order. ROI on any gear in this industry is a game of razor-thin margins. And if the past 12 months have been any indicator, a lot of those batch 1 orders will hit ebay with 4-10x markups, and be sold without issue.

what you say is true however it applies to 'bitcoin miners' the Neptune. 2 for 1 deal stuff.....there is nothing in the works that i know of for the scypt miner Titan indeed...the 1st batch titan folks were told they are getting 300mh where as the 2nd batch titans will ship 1 month later for 400mh you could make a case that at 3k less $$$ the 2nd batch may ROI before the 1st batch titans...things are in disarray over at KNC too imho.....it usually takes 9 months imho for an asic mnfg ..even if good intentions to fall on their face.....power corrupts i guess.

Searing

Ah, I'd heard if the Titans were late they'd make the same deal with them. If that's not the case, then I stand adjusted. I don't foresee them being late because KNC needs the Batch 1 people to be happy, so they can crowdsource more funds for themselves. I agree, things have gotten mangled over there, but they're still the best bet for heavy-hitting gear.

Over a week, and 1 day past the due date (I believe), and AT's PR/customer-relations is still out to lunch. That always provides a warm fuzzy feeling.
557  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][POT] PotCoin Launches Today 01/21 @ 4:20 on: June 06, 2014, 12:25:39 PM
The price of the coin does not matter so much, at least not so much to me. Bought 70k at 717 a week ago, which was a bargain then. The most important thing to me is the stability, which the coin seems to have. The market will dictate the price. The more and more the coin gets out there, the more it pops up in places and shows face among the huge network of merchants that sell everything under the sun relating to either marijuana or tobacco products, the better off the coin will do.

Big money big money no whammy no whammy, STOP!

1000% Agree .. stability is important. That said, IMO there is a line of perception; coins that are below 1000 are on shaky ground and are not as trust worthy.  I think that needs to be a target for stability -- then move it higher over time

I agree that network stability is paramount, followed by price stability, and that in a transactional/flow coin the price isn't as important--but you have to keep in mind that stability comes from hashrate, and price matters to those mining it. If it's not profitable or worthwhile, you lose portions of the network, and a flux in the network can cause volatility in price.

As has been discussed many times, any serious business coin should have its own private farm to always ensure a certain amount of hashrate is securing and processing the blockchain, and it's usually a farm owned or supported by the coin's owners.
558  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][POT] PotCoin Launches Today 01/21 @ 4:20 on: June 06, 2014, 12:23:09 PM
I focus on cryptsy mainly, I've never used mintpal. The floor was 1300-1400 on cryptsy for its existance, up until the failed 4/20 takeoff, at which point it's continually been on a downward trend ever since.

https://www.cryptsy.com/markets/view/173

cryptsy shows trading well below 1400 from end of March to beginning of April.

cookiemonster7 asked you when the next halving will be.
Since you already read the halving schedule, you can answer that question for him.

I guess we're seeing 2 different things then, and I did say 1300-1400, which I see on my plot graphs. Spikes below are normal, just as are spikes above. The rough floor for a long time was 1300-1400. It's not worth arguing Roll Eyes

And his question was already answered. I suppose you didn't see that either? But thanks for telling me what I should do, mom.
559  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][POT] PotCoin Launches Today 01/21 @ 4:20 on: June 05, 2014, 05:51:34 PM
It was stable before, it's no more or less stable than prior to the change. The biggest difference is the average price has dropped. It's floor used to be about 1400 satoshis, right now it seems to be 700-800.

But it's going to keep halving, just like it was going to do before the change. Both  versions had a halving schedule.

It's like people don't even read.

https://www.mintpal.com/market/POT/BTC

Click on "max".  I do not see a 1400 floor, except *maybe* two weeks in April.

I am just stating my opinion about halving to the developers.
I, of course, have no control over the schedule.

I focus on cryptsy mainly, I've never used mintpal. The floor was 1300-1400 on cryptsy for its existance, up until the failed 4/20 takeoff, at which point it's continually been on a downward trend ever since.

You'll have to notify Cryptsy of the source change, and even then they may not switch since it's not official code.
I opened a support ticket with Cryptsy almost two weeks ago.  It's still "being processed".

They usually handle switchovers in less than a day. Might be delayed because it's not the official source, or maybe they just forgot lol.

You guys should try and track down whoever owns the official github and get them to merge.
