Hey everyone,

does anyone know a free screen recorder software for macs?

I found a good free ond for linux that I'm using,
and I have a camtasia license for windows.

But I need something similar for mac, if possible for free.

Any recommendations?

Screencastomatic. I've used it before for some of my projects. I believe that's how it's spelled.

Ok, great, I'll take a look at it. http://screencast-o-matic.com/home

 Smiley

GIFs can't get any better than that!

I would pay good SPR if someone would create similar sexy GIFs for spreadcoin.

I don't have time to create them myself anymore obviously, but I will pay atleast 100 SPR for every GIF created.

Only requirement: it must be high quality, both in animation and choice of model.

I reserve the right to pay less or NOT AT ALL if quality sucks. Roll Eyes

Anyone interested?  Grin

You can post GIFs here:

lol, this thread was created when the original mr. spread was still around.
How time flies by!

We are talking about distributed consensus, that's our holy grail.
POW and POS are examples of how distributed consensus is (pretended to be) achieved.
We have to show which one does a better, more stable and more flawless job in achieving this goal.

The conclusion of the paper I linked:

Quote
We showed that by depending only on resources within the system,
proof of stake cannot be used to form a distributed consensus,
since it depends on the very history it is trying to form to enforce loss of value.

Contrast that to the essence of bitcoin's breakthrough achievement (distributed consensus):

Quote
It can be mathematically proven that given only a synchronous network it is impossible to achieve distributed consensus in a cryptographically guaranteed way. Bitcoin achieves the impossible by weakening its requirement from cryptographic guarantee to a mere economic one. That is, it introduces an opportunity cost from outside of the system (expenditure on computing time and energy) and provides rewards within the system, but only if consensus on an unbroken transaction history is maintained

I guess that's what I love about POW... that it adds true real world economic incentives to the game.

If POS wants to get rid of this capitalist/economic/meritocratic part of bitcoin, it better damn well make sure that it replaces it with something equally as good or better.

Which I highly doubt exists.  Smiley

I don't think that "everybody ogling the stakes of everybody else" can even be considered an economic incentive. What is this anyway... "money creation through book keeping"?  Huh

Therefor:

226  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: November 18, 2016, 12:59:09 PM

Decentralization as I understand it has nothing to do with democracy or fairness, but rather accessibility.

Agreed, I'm not a big fan of democracy, since it's the "original 51% attack". Or mob rule as some like to call it.

Would it not seem that POS is far more accessible, requiring nothing more than a standard laptop or raspberry pi to operate the wallet?

Well, that's what you need to prove. Scientifically.
You need to show that POS will be in every case a better solution than POW.
Buzzwords and assumptions are not doing that.
Yes, I'm aware that a raspberry pi requires less energy than a 2kW ASIC, but that is irrelevant.

What is relevant is whether we achieve true distributed consensus or not.

If this can only be done in an energy intensive way, then so be it.

If you want a detailed overview of PoS v. PoW:

* Ethereum has a good overview as it is migrating from PoW to PoS https://blog.ethereum.org/2014/11/25/proof-stake-learned-love-weak-subjectivity/

* Cointelegraph on why a new algo is needed https://cointelegraph.com/news/the-inevitable-failure-of-proof-of-stake-blockchains-and-why-a-new-algorithm-is-needed

* Others like Charlie Lee trying to solve this issue https://eprint.iacr.org/2014/452.pdf

The problem with all the links you posted (if I may say so) is that all of them have already made up their mind that POW is bad, and that it needs to be replaced with their new favorite: POS.

I find this rather suspicious and unscientific, this certainly won't convince me.

I need a paper where someone unapologetically and mercilessly wants to falsify whether POS or POW is better, without prefering POS from the getgo.
The premise can't be "POS is the solution - don't you see that it requires barely any energy??? - let's find justifications/rationalizations why POS will replace POW",
but rather "let's compare POS and POW and figure out what they actually do regarding distributed consensus".

I think this paper here tries to do that:

https://download.wpsoftware.net/bitcoin/pos.pdf

And here's the reddit discussion about this paper: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2jwbvr/excellent_paper_on_why_proof_of_stake_is/

If POS is really this super solution then we need to scrutinize it mercilessly. Not cuddle with it.

If POS still stands after such a beating, then you convince me.

I've been reading through georgem's long list of posts these past weeks,
and I agree very much with his philosophy.

That's pretty flattering, thanks for reading through all my posts, lol.

But I warn you, if you find one or more weird posts (especially from the early days) don't complain.

Cool
228  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: November 17, 2016, 03:50:35 PM
For future reference if Georgem is not in the forum for a while, everyone can begin espousing ideas that lead to centralization. He will magically appear. It's like rubbing a genie's lamp.

At what point do I consider this a "denial of service" attempt on my available time?  Wink

I'm kidding, I will never get tired of teaching you guys a little bit about decentralization.

Now back to work.  Wink

BTW I'm in the BCT forum all the time, but 99% of the time it's because I'm looking up technical bitcoin stuff.
229  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: November 17, 2016, 03:41:21 PM
Hey guys, don't forget to visit the spreadcointalk forum from time to time:

http://spreadcointalk.org/index.php?topic=763.0

minerpage just posted an interesting article.

I wouldn't mind to see a little bit more action in the forum.
230  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (official thread) on: November 17, 2016, 03:08:11 PM
anyway............ GO SPREADCOIN

Sorry for your loss georgem, long live to DPR ! Smiley

Thanks guys.

Big thank you to all the miner's out there.
I consider any hash thrown in Spreadcoin's direction as valuable as any dollar I receive as donation.
231  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: November 17, 2016, 03:04:35 PM
My proposal, should it be feasible, is that in order for miners to have a vote they must prove that they have some stake in Spreadcoin's success. A collateral of sorts in order to ensure that they are in fact a community member and not some mercenary coming in to extract wealth from the community. A collateral ensures that they have a stake in the success of Spreadcoin, and thus have the incentive to vote in a meaningful way. A way which has Spreadcoin's best interest at heart. Of course other people would be able to mine the coin, but only those with X amount of Spreadcoin would be able to vote on the reward that goes towards the overlay network.

But that would be the essence of centralization.

One key factor of decentralization is to make it easy for newcomers to enter and compete.
Adding regulations of any kind always makes it harder for the newcomers, and further helps the already "established" early investors who already have more SPR than they can count.

Miner's aren't just extracting wealth from the community, they are solving ridiculously hard mathematical problems.
They are already burdened with the collateral they pay in the form of hardware and energy, and the reward they get they quickly sell back to the SPR community anyway. Often at dumping prices.
So it's a closed system, and not a problem that most miner's aren't really affiliated with SPR.

232  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: November 12, 2016, 05:37:53 PM
Maybe DPR is giving the what the fuck face because people are dumping even at these prices lol.

In other non-hamster related news (aka boring news) the explorer at chainz doesn't look like it's working. Webpage returns "Syntax Error: Invalid const type "TCoinOption" expected "TCoinStatus" [line: 2271, column: 7, file: ChainzDB]"

Edit: It's back up!

Cool.

I love it when devs forget to disable error reporting and broadcast to the whole wide world where exactly an error happened, what DB they use, etc....  Roll Eyes

233  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (official thread) on: November 11, 2016, 10:11:16 AM
Does DPR have much growing to do since he's so young or is he basically fully developed now? Looking forward to more pictures of him  Cool

Actually from what I've heard and read (and seen with mr. spread), most of their growth/maturity happens within the first 3 months.
But the curious thing is that after that they still keep growing forever, although only slowly.
So a 2 year old djungarian dwarf hamster (Phodopus sungorus) will be up to 30-40% larger than what he was after 3 months.

This picture of DPR is from yesterday:

He has this unique character trait that he bends his head sideways when looking at us humans. Like saying: "What the f*uck is this..."
 Cheesy
234  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (official thread) on: November 10, 2016, 04:43:31 PM

That is some sad news. He was quite the character and I will certainly miss his 'presence'. You gave the warning that he might not have much time a while ago, but I didn't think it would be this soon! I guess my micro-nation will be dedicating the first few service node payments to a memorial for Mr. Spread - maybe I can put it onto the blockchain.

Congrats again on the new member(s) of the family. May Dread Pirate Roberts (and the other newest member) live a long and healthy life! The real question is how much does he weigh? lol!

Also, speaking of donations.  Wink

Thank you very much.

In hamsteryears, it's like Mr. Spread died 65 years old. Not too old, but also not too young. I had hoped he would have lived another 6-12 months...

DPR's weight is now 35 g. Now that I have a bigger "data set" of dwarf hamsters, it looks like Mr. Spread was a veritable Bud Spencer among dwarf hamsters. Pretty big and heavy with his 65g (on average).

Here are some of the best shots of him:

And pictures like this are my favorite:

He used to hang out at the plexiglas door gap, sniffing and looking.... "there is something going on out there!"

BTW, I have tons of video and foto material, I will create a compilation and use much of it in the podcast, where appropriate.
It's very MEME worthy material.  Tongue
235  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: November 10, 2016, 02:58:10 PM
As soon as I have more time I will answer your questions in more detail.

For now, just as a foretaste:

2 weeks ago you asked:

Georgem

If a Bitcoin node broadcasts a message to the Bitcoin Blockchain, is it reasonable to expect that the average confirmation time for all transactions within a given fee range is how long that individual broadcast message should take, give or take say +12hrs?

A bitcoin node doesn't talk with the bitcoin blockchain, only with other bitcoin nodes.
The bitcoin blockchain doesn't even "really exist" in a static form since it's in a constant state of flux in the top few most recent blocks. (multiple blockchains exist at the same time, until "it's been decided" who the orphan blocks are, but this process repeats ad infinitum since new blocks keep coming in all the time as the height increases)

I don't think that the average confirmation time has much to do with the fee, with the only exception when you send a zero-fee transaction and are then at the total mercy of a miner to STILL put you on the blockchain even though you didn't incentivize him to do so. That's probably a little bit different for coins who hit their max block size all the time. But even then, it will remain unpredictable how long it takes your transaction to be confirmed. Paying a higher fee is NOT a guarantee that your transaction will be confirmed earlier. It only creates an incentive. Incentives are not the same thing as guarantees.

And therefor I don't think you can use that for any reliable system of "node scores". Too many parameters and uncertainties.
236  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: November 10, 2016, 02:43:29 PM
I'm afraid it's not as simple as that, since we want to make it work as part of a large decentralized and permissionless system.

It looks like we are going to have some sort of smart contracts that will be handled by servicenodes and that's what will allow things like "decentralized exchange" to come into existence. (Among other such contracts).

But if you think that a spreadwallet alone is enough to make this work you are mistaken. People will abuse the shit out of it.  Smiley

Will have more tangible insights once I start my podcast.
237  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: November 10, 2016, 11:04:45 AM
If you can load up Spreadcoind and Bitcoind within Spreadwallet and Spreadwallet allows you to control the deamon to send funds from either, then we should be able to get one deamon talking to another. From there, we should be able to get proofs out that someone is actually running a Bitcoin full node (or any coin full node).

What do you mean with "one deamon talking to another" in this context?
A bitcoin node and a spreadcoin node CAN'T talk to each other.
The messages they send are incompatible.

But yes, I design Spreadwallet as a multi wallet, you as the user have complete control over the privatekeys of any wallet/coin you create or import into the Spreadwallet.
238  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: November 10, 2016, 11:00:27 AM
I was actually hoping I could borrow Mr. Spread from Georgem and have Mr. Spread be the all-mighty ruler. I would just be a figurehead for Mr. Spread's conniving plans for world domination.  Grin

I'm sorry to inform you that Mr. Spread has died a few weeks ago.  Embarrassed
That's what dwarf hamsters do, you know... just live 2 years on average. Was a sad, sad day, but we got over it.
I wasn't sure when or if to report it to you guys.... it was just too heart breaking.

He just silently passed away one night. He was nearly 2 years old.

Farewell, sweet prince.

Even in his death, he looked cute.

So... about a month before Mr. Spread died we obtained a new dwarf hamster, a female, born end of july. (I'll show her another time).
So I built another cage for her.
Then after Mr. Spread's death, we thought we would get us a new boy dwarf hamster, since we had an empty cage now.

And we found an incredibly rare specimen:

A boy dwarf hamster, with very rare colors, born in the middle of august 2016.

Since you, rhinomonkey, have been extremely helpful with the donations you made (top donor!) towards the development of the Spreadwallet,
I asked you if you wanted to become this little guy's god father. You agreed and already found a name for him.

So I'd like to now publicly present to everybody...

DreadPirateRoberts!

He's the chief scientist overlooking the Spreadwallet. I'm his main employee right now.

@coins101, Mr. Spread would make you Chief Imagineering General.

Hm, DreadPirateRoberts would probably say that Imagineering is not something to centralize but something that everybody should do.
He'd probably invite everybody to write whitepapers and give their input, lol Cheesy

He likes to stare upwards into the sky all the time, as if he knows something about spreadcoin's destination!

Everybody please welcome our newest member: DreadPirateRobers, godson of Rhinomonkey.

Yep, pretty good summary.

I was just about to answer myself, lol  Grin

I think this will be like Brexit, nothing bad will happen, only lots of fearmongering before and after.

I welcome President Trump. (Lord Pepe has blessed him, praise KEK.  Grin )

To me, even politics is about "Decentralize Everything".
More decentralization: good
More centralization: bad

And much like Brexit was a big FUCK YOU to the EU centralizers,
Trump (and the Movement behind him) is a big FUCK YOU to the globalist establishment.

2016 is a good year.

The monster Angela Merkel is the next in line, ...
Germany needs to have its FUCK YOU moment soon, they are hurting...  Sad

Praise KEK, blessed be his name, and if Pepe wills it, more FUCK YOU'S to be heard soon!

Now back to work, ... sorry couldn't resist making this post.  Cool
