would be good to have at least 3 dns seeds, for the cause of decentralization. If necessary I could run one.

Very good.

Let's discuss it here:

http://spreadcointalk.org/index.php?topic=461.0

PS: We will also need to check current hardcoded seed nodes (not to be mistaken with DNS seeds), and adjust them accordingly:
https://github.com/spreadcoin/spreadcoin/blob/master/src/net.cpp#L1259

1202  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | True Decentralization (No Pools) | Testing New Masternodes on: March 12, 2015, 04:27:00 PM
Another thing, now that Mr.Spread's website is down, we also don't have a dns seeder for our wallets anymore,
this makes synching take a little longer than usual.

https://github.com/spreadcoin/spreadcoin/blob/master/src/net.cpp#L1199

When we make the transition we will have to install atleast one (preferably more) dns seeds,
e.g.
dnsseed.spreadcoin.info
dnsseed.spreadcoin.us
etc

and then create new wallets for all systems.

See https://github.com/spreadcoin/spreadcoin-seeder for more info.

Hello to fellow Spreaders!

I have partially restored spreadcoin.net website, added some new features, more to come.

Check http://spreadcoin.us

Smiley

Very cool.

Master Nodes keep you in the currency you are transacting and you are simply accessing different services.

Yes, this is vitally important.

But I can imagine Spreadcoin using additional blockchain-like datastructures, not to be used for additional currency units ofcourse, but so that it facilitates the storage of new kinds of datastructures that might be needed for future MN functionality.  Wink

I think we need to wait 30 days after Mr. Spreads disappearance then create a new thread. That gives him a month to make his choice.

Indeed. So that would be just another 10 days.

I promise you that you will not regret it if you stay around a few months.

(PS we might change the thread though and start a new one, since this has still Mr.Spread written all over it, and dead links wherever you look)

I'll be around for longer than a few months.

If everyone else is ok with it, then we can create a new thread and ask the mods to lock this one after 'x' period of time? Or, can we ask them to hide Mr.Spreads email and change control of the thread?

Nice.

I don't know, but the mods here have a reputation of not being very cooperative.

Best thing would be if they lock this thread, yes. But they will probably not even do that.
So we might need your posting powers once the new thread is up, so that the old one disappears into irrelevance and nothingness.  Cheesy
1207  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | True Decentralization (No Pools) | Testing New Masternodes on: March 05, 2015, 09:40:32 PM
Good find.  Though I still don't think it's as clear cut as you make it sound

Fair comment. I have the advantage of being a code contributor, so was on nodding terms with Mr Spread. Not that it gives me any better view, just more data to work with and that gets reflected in my personal narrative and, in turn, my writing.

My perspective is that the community has lost a key team member. But that's the extent of it, the existing community of SPR app users survives. This is why p2p was designed to be resilient, after all. It's a bit of a trope but collectively surmounting this kind of setback is supposed to “build character”, time will tell I s'pose.

Cheers

Graham

+1

The moment Master Nodes are off the agenda, I'm also off. Other than that, I'll give the project as much support as possible.

Georgem already knows the level of dedication to the cause that I am capable of:

Ok, here it is, in all its beauty. Top 50 Posters, all fabulously awesome people.

It includes all 3133 pages, today.

-snip-

I didn't tell you before, but I am glad you are here.  Cool
I also like the support I see coming from gjhiggins.
I promise you that you will not regret it if you stay around a few months.

Hi fellow Spreaders!

Once the spreadcoin.net has gone down, less aware (potential) community members have no universal source/link/resource/handle to be part of what we are, even location of a wallet becomes undefined.

I suggest to try to bring back spreadcoin.net content (or at least some) online.

I can provide hosting and domain (spreadcoin.us), has anyone got a backup of spreadcoin.net ?

If we all stay united, we have a good chance of having Spreadcoin 2.0 born.

You are right, we need to solve that ASAP.

Unfortunately I don't have any wallet binairies as backup, I only have the github source.
I will need to recompile it and recreate binairies for all systems.

So you have spreadcoin.us? Nice, I own spreadcoin.info.  Grin

I love the redundancy. That's what we call decentralization.
1209  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | True Decentralization (No Pools) | Testing New Masternodes on: March 04, 2015, 12:28:33 PM
SPR is dead,it's time to go back to invest in DRK  Grin Grin

Well if you want to create tension, you are going the right way about it.

The fact is this: Master Nodes need applications built. Darkcoin is going to spend the foreseeable future building currency related applications.

There isn't the capacity, that I can tell, to build other 'non-core' applications.

But Master Nodes are decentralised servers. They can do many, many things.  If you have a sequential approach, then alternative uses for Master Nodes will take decades.

Working with others to create test case applications for Master Nodes is actually beneficial to all projects, including Darkcoin.  It's free R&D for Darkcoin. As the market leader that can use other's Apps that prove to be popular, it indirectly provides price and demand support for Darkcoin. It makes Darkcoin potentially more investable over the longer-term.

I totally agree. I like the idea you had recently regarding torrent links.

My vision for spreadcoin masternode services revolves around those two things at the moment (and more to come in the future)

1) Spread the message ---> Encrypted In-Wallet Messaging Service. Simply send a message to a SPR address.

Messages are not saved in the blockchain, but distributed by MNs, and kept only in your wallet. Kinda like throwaway messages.

2) Spread the money ---> A crowdfunding Feature, also realized with the help of MNs.

It would consist of a special kind of address, which has both a timeframe and SPR goal attached to it.
Once this address is created, the crowd funding process would start:
Should enough or more transactions than the SPR goal be payed into this address during the set timeframe, then the owner of this address will recieve all the SPR payed into it. (money will be unlocked)
But should the SPR goal not be reached, then everybody who sent SPR to this address will have their transaction reversed and the money returned.
To reassure that enough SPR for all the txfees needed is tied to this address, the start of a crowdfunding could cost something like 10 SPR.
Whould be awesome to have that available from within the wallet and the daemon.

spreadcoin.net seems to be down, at least for me.

For me too.

Looks like Mr. Spread is gone for good.

Also, the domain will expire on 21 july 2015.
Should it be renewed we will know that Mr.Spread is still out there (and still cares, lol)
Should it not, we should try and register the domain once it is available.

Not to throw a wrench in the subject but since we are looking at picking up the pieces and starting from scratch maybe we should consider a name change to?  So we don't have to deal with the fact of the Dev leaving and the trollsters fud.  Maybe a rebirth of the coin with a new look, new name, and new devs?  Just wondering?

That's the thing, we are not really picking up the pieces, since nothing is broken yet.
We also don't want to start from scratch since spreadcoin has many qualities that we like and want to continue.

We all LOVE the name spreadcoin and its ideas, and all the memes that surround this name.

We also already have a blockchain that we are invested in, and a community, and a forum, etc...

We are not looking to start something new, but to continue what we already have.

No option but to do exactly that if the community wants to move on.

Exactly, we can hope for the best (that Mr. Spread returns) but we must prepare for the worst.
1213  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | True Decentralization (No Pools) | Testing New Masternodes on: March 02, 2015, 07:25:18 PM
Looking at spreadcointalk and it appears SPR really could be one of tge select few coins that a community takeover may prevail. Fingers crossed.

Thank you. Yes, If only I had more time, I would put 100% of my time into this.

But stay tuned, we are getting closer and closer.

One step at a time.

When there is a development fund, I owe it 500 SPR, courtesy of minerpage who is donating his winnings to the fund.

Georgem, if you purchased the domain name, perhaps you should get the 500SPR, and the domain can then belong to the community?

Ok, but how can we make a domain community-owned?
Do you know a registrar that allows multiple ownership?

you just say: hey, I pass ownership of ........... to the SPR community and will not make any ownership claims, now or in the future.  If I continue to administer the .......... domain name, it will be for the benefit of the community.

I am the custodian of the domainname spreadcoin.info and everything forum related (spreadcointalk.org/net/com) and I will always act for the benefit of the community.
I do not claim ownership of these domains, they belong to the community, I just keep the domains intact and updated and pay the necessary bills.
If I am one day not capable or interested anymore in doing this (can't imagine why ATM), I will openly communicate it, and transfer all domains back to the community.

Maybe there is also a registrar out there that allows multiple ownership of domains, I will check this. We need to have something in place for when people get sick or die.

I know that something like this exists for swiss domains: *.ch , where you can really have additional members owning the same domain, and when something changes (like IP of domain, or who pays the bill) then atleast 2 of 3 people have to agree, etc...

Who knows what the address for the development fund?

Is there one controlled by georgem?

No, here is a range of tasks I am involved with:

I am running the forum at the moment.

I am also willing to create animations to promote spreadcoin, once we have picked up the pieces.

To help with those two things (forum + animations) was my original plan when I joined spreadcoin 2 months ago.

But now that Mr. Spread has disappeared, I currently also try to understand and adjust his Code, and the whole development cycle of a coin.
(how to setup a new blockchain/fork, genesisblock, seednodes, compile wallets for all systems, etc...)
I have 20 years of programming experience (but I don't have a deep understanding of C++ yet), and love the opportunity I get here, it is hard but I am a fast learner!  Cool

PS: No, I don't control any SPR funds, except my own stash. Everything I control is forum related, plus I recently registered spreadcoin.info, to create a new website should Mr. Spread never reappear.
PS2: I don't know if there even is a development fund at the moment. Maybe ask MyFarm?
1217  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | True Decentralization (No Pools) | Testing New Masternodes on: February 28, 2015, 05:32:53 PM
I have made a new twitter account for SpreadCoin:

https://twitter.com/SpreadCoinTeam

Very cool, we are going to need that, in the case Mr. Spread is gone for good.
(AFAIK he controls (controlled?) the official twitter account)
1218  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | True Decentralization (No Pools) | Testing New Masternodes on: February 27, 2015, 11:00:33 PM
Hey guys, is everyone able to see Mr. Spread's email address on Spreadcointalk?
Because I can, and theres something about it... It seems familiar.

It reminds me of Satoshi mixed with Gavin Anderson.

I can see it, but it doesn't have anything to do with satoshi or gavin andresen.

It's a reference to the movie matrix. ;-)

Mr. Spread sees himself as Neo... well... if he likes.... did neo also run away? No... but he had agents and machines hunting him day and night....

Maybe our neo is not such a good ninja?

I just feel bad for Georgem. Time and effort gone to waste if this anonymous dev doesn't return.

Why is that? He is one of the guys excited to pick it up and run with it.

Exactly.

Neither time nor effort has gone to waste.
In the contrary, I have never come so far before in understanding how a coin works.

For me, spreadcoin is like a constant exercise in true decentralization.

Having the main dev "do a satoshi" after he demonstrated a new paradigm is probably just the next iteration of that.  Smiley

And now a group of people try to maintain and continue spreadcoin in a more decentralized manner.

Stay tuned.

Bravo to you Smiley I do think that Mr. Spread will return though.

And he will always be welcome!

I wonder if he is reading this?
