Harry Kane scored 2 goals and Lazio had no shots on target in the match.
When it comes to Harry Kane for Bayern, there is no denying it. His contribution is awesome. Even though the team's performance has seem to be quite bad this season, Kane's contribution, especially his goals, cannot be ignored. Moreover,  Kane has scored 27 UEFA Champions League goals so far. Yes, this can be said to be quite an extraordinary achievement. And there is still another chance because Bayern is still in the next round.

Source: Harry Kane

The euphoria of Bayern Munich's victory over Lazio which brought them into the quarter is still very much felt. However, they have to stay on track, because the struggle ahead will be even more difficult. I'm sure that after this, Bayern Munich will focus much more and strengthen their team for this UCL. For, their hopes in the Bundesliga are very small, maybe it seems that they don't have any chance again to win the title this season.

Honestly given Harry Kane's age I thought that he scored way more goals than 27 in the Champions League! But ok, he is doing the job for Bayern and it does at least pay off for them that they paid so much money for him in the sense that they know they didn't make a mistake. If they don't win any titles though, there isn't really a pay off for them financially.

Anyone thinks that Bayern Munich has a say in the Champions League title race this season?

Milan is not where the fans should look at anyway, Liverpool is the one to get it if you ask me. Leverkusen has shown the world that they have what it takes and won against Bayern whereas Liverpool lost to Arsenal recently, that is why I would understand why someone would say Leverkusen too.

However, Milan has no chance, they are not even remotely as good as those two teams and have no chance at all, we should not expect them to have a win at all, they are not going to get that win. Liverpool will be the winner if you ask me and Leverkusen is the second in line, Milan may not be even third, there are some other very good teams as well .Milan is decent, but they are not champions level of a team for Europa, not this season at least.
Generally, all the teams that come from Champions League are supposed to be the tough opponents for the teams that are already in the Europa League but this time around we have Liverpool and Bayern Leverkusen that are stronger than all the teams that joined them from Champions League; nevertheless, we cannot give up and conclude that they cannot do anything, but Leverkusen and Liverpool can defeat any of them which means they still remain the favorites to win the Europa League.

I am betting for Leverkusen to win the Europa because they are the only team that is yet to lose in any of their League matches, they defeated Bayern Munich, and other big teams in the Bundesliga which is one of the main reason I am optimistic that they will win the Europa Leagues this season.

I wouldn't say this can be deemed as a rule of thumb as it does depend on the form of a team. When Barcelona got relegated into the Europa League last season, it could be said that they were doing well in their domestic league but they had huge problems to get along in the European competitions. Everyone thought they would be smashing the Europa League, but I was quite sure they were definitely not win it. It's tough for teams to take on the challenge when they are full of superstars and are used to playing the Champions League, but then end up playing against Ludogoretz or something. It shouldn't be underestimated that especially the superstars can grow with the challenge, but the fun fact is that the opposite can hold true as well. They can't play their best against the worst (I exaggerated a bit here, but you get the idea).

So this is why it is hard to tell whether the teams from the Champions League understand the challenge and will play their highest level or whether they will fall pray for an inferior but highly motivated team. This happens quite often in my opinion.

This week i try a more simple bet, less games and easy games:

* Bologna - Hellas Verona FC => Bologna
* Juventus - Frosinone => Juventus
* Lecce - Inter Milan => Inter Milan

only 2.78x, i hope is easy to win
If the match matches what it says on paper, Juventus, Bologna and Inter should have a much greater chance than their opponents of winning. Moreover, at the moment, Bologna is quite on fire and has high motivation to immediately enter the top 4. Even though this doesn't seem easy for them. but at least they must continue to survive in their current position.

What might be the next concern is Juventus, because several times they have been quite and very worrying. Their condition seemed not to be good, so several times they actually wasted their chances of winning. And hopefully that's not the case this time.

Thank god that whatever the paper says doesn't always come true in soccer or otherwise we could stop watching it altogether. But let's see whether the on-paper-theory makes sense:

Juventus tied their last game against Verona away from home 2-2.

Before that they lost against Udinese at home 0-1.

Before that they lost against Inter Milan away from home 1-0, but that's fine as Inter Milan is better according to the data on paper.

Before that they tied their game at home against the superpower called Empoli 1-1.

If I sum this up, it seems it doesn't always work out what the data on paper says...

Porto vs Arsenal 1-0. Arsenal as a whole dominated the game but Porto's very strong defense made it difficult for Arsenal to score goals.
And Porto's 1 goal in the remaining extra time scored by Galeno in the 90+4 minute was a painful goal for Arsenal.
Arsenal has learned the lesson so maybe in the second leg at home in the Emirates Stadium they will be more attacking from the first half and make sure that they are able to get equal before the halftime mark. Arsenal can score more than one goal in a game as they have shown many times in this season, so it is possible that they turn things around in the second leg. The defeat was painful, but this is what the game is about, I think.
Napoli are lucky that the Victor Osimhen in the just finish African cup that missed many good chances is not the same Victor Osimhen in Napoli who scores with the slightest opportunity. His goal stole the joy away from Barcelona.

I am not sure if Arsenal has learnt any lesson. Wasn't it Sporting that eliminated Arsenal last year from the Europa League? Or last season I should say. They seem to have problems with teams from Portugal and even worse, it was exactly the same this time. Arsenal had the ball most of the time, but they did not have one chance in the game whereas Porto was standing deep and were waiting for possible counter attacks. I don't know how it is possible that Arsenal can't have just one chance against Porto. Of course Porto isn't just some club, but Arsenal is a title contender in the Premier League. What a boring game it was and I am happy for Porto because this result makes the next game quite exciting.

The second half Liverpool made a good change, to be honest in the first half it was tense and hoping for a change in the second half but it's true now the score is 3-1.
It is certain that Liverpool will win 3 points and waltz again from Manchester City with a difference of 4 points but it is already a safe position even though the competition remains tight if not far apart.
The worry is that many players are injured if this continues then the situation will be last season where Liverpool collapsed, but I'm not sure that.
I almost thought Liverpool dropped points in this match, but their game got better in the second half. Currently Liverpool seems safe to end the match with a score of 3-1, but they must maintain their defense and not give Luton more opportunities.

If Liverpool win, then they will still lead the standings with a gap of 4 points from Manchester City for a while, but of course this is still not safe because Manchester City, who want to defend the title, will struggle to keep the gap to 1 point. Manchester City visit Bournemouth this week, so I think they will win that game too.

They dominated the game in the first half, too. But they couldn't get the job done and score and Luton Town can be quite stubborn. But that double strike in the second half turned the game upside down within no time and Liverpool didn't stop pressuring. There are good reasons why Liverpool has the best offense in the Premier League and what a finish would this be of the Liverpool - Klopp era if they can win the trophy?

But this is still a lot of hard work for sure and after that loss against Arsenal two weeks ago the main goal was to get back on track immediately. They have done that and now they are prepared for the English week coming up with the League Cup final and the FA Cup.
34  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: La Liga (Spanish League) Prediction Thread 2023/24 on: February 21, 2024, 09:14:12 PM
Girona will be going to UCL next season, a good amount of money for them, considering they have one of the greatest scouting networks in the world working for them, they could use that money to buy some very good players. The money is not paid until the half of the season, so they will prepay for everything and get paid later on, but they will have that money coming for them. Look at how much they spent to build this team, not even remotely close to what they are going to gain from this.

Being in top four of la liga and being in the group stages of UCL as well, means at least 50, maybe even 60-70 million euros to their account, if they built such a good team for much less, then with this money they can (or should) get even better.

You talk as if competition from other clubs does not exist at all. In a non-competitive environment you can develop like this in a parabolic fashion, but in reality it doesn’t work. Every season one of the ordinary clubs takes off, but the most difficult task is not to continue to progress, but to at least maintain what has already been achieved. Look at Union Berlin, look at Newcastle. The same thing will happen to Girona next season, I am 90% sure of it.

Newcastle is a different story than Union Berlin by miles and miles and miles. They are playing in the Premier League and even an investor doesn't guarantee that they can out of nowhere compete with Manchester City and Liverpool and yet they are 8th in the Premier League at the moment and I don't deem their drop in performance that significant. It is clearly a drop, but not comparable to Union Berlin.

Girona is owned by Guariola's brother in part at least and they have an investor group backing them up. I am not sure what they are going to do at the end of the season and especially during the transfer period, but I don't see a 90% chance that they would end up like Union Berlin. You provided quite a stretch as to how much a club can drop from the previous season.
35  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: La Liga (Spanish League) Prediction Thread 2023/24 on: February 20, 2024, 11:43:16 PM
~~
Girona can only climb to the top of the standings if Madrid loses 5 points, and so far Los Blancos are still showing a good level of consistency. This means that even though Girona opportunities are very open, this will be very difficult to realize. The La Liga match has entered the final third with the number of games remaining standing at 13, many things can happen, but Los Blancos have so far shown no signs of backsliding.

We rarely see Girona achievements in Europe five most elite competitions, where their performance has improved significantly and they have been able to maintain a consistent level for a long time at the top of the standings. In the landscape of these five competitions, Girona is almost close to Leverkusen level in the Bundesliga, what I think is most interesting is not the trophies they will or can achieve, but the process they are carrying out.
Girona must hope Real Madrid losing points, to climb that position. But it seems like Girona chances are chances are thinning, currently Girona point gap with Real Madrid is 6 points. Because on matchday 25 Girona couldn't get any points against Bilbao, really sad.
Yeah Girona achievements are indeed very good after successfully getting a ticket to La Liga, in the previous season they were also good but unfortunately they were not consistent until the end of the season. Regarding Girona is almost close to Leverkusen level in the Bundesliga, currently I am not giving much speculation in that direction.

Before Girona starts hoping anything, they need to make sure that they are going to win their games in the future and I think this could be one of the biggest problems they have. Girona is on a downtrend not only in terms of their results, but also with their performances. They didn't play all that well and they deserved to lose their games. If it was differently and they played well but lost, I would think that they can still close that gap if Real Madrid loses points, but for now I don't think that's how all of this will be playing out towards the end of the season.
36  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread 2023/2024 on: February 20, 2024, 11:30:35 PM
Liverpool's hold of the top position looks shaky at the moment and the reason is the injuries you mentioned. They have less tournaments to compete so I guess that helps them too. I still think City has a better squad depth than LFC but we'll see how this goes. Maybe we'll see the gap to widen in the next ten games.
Seeing a team that has difficulty maintaining its position so that it remains in first place at the top of the standings is very difficult to do; therefore, there are many teams that cannot control their emotions on the field and do not compete calmly, so it will be difficult to win and maintain their position at the top. of the standings. However, Luton Town's match hasn't started yet, so you have the opportunity to set up a good strategy to win this match because Luton Town shouldn't be a tough opponent and it will be easy for Liverpool to win.

When a team is competing in the strongest league in the world, I think it is pretty normal to feel the mental stress and sometimes it gets to them. As a team whenever they lead the standings, they also know that everyone behind them is most likely going win their games and then it raises the pressure additionally. That's why I think the Premier League title is probably to be considered on one level with the Champions League or maybe almost as difficult. There is Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea and some others that are not so bad. I know that Chelsea is out of shape, but when most of these teams are about to peak, it's so hard to win the Premier League title and you can almost be sure that at least two teams are at their peak while almost none of the games are easy anyway.

I like your post because we are about to define an entire team that only replaces Ronaldo... Cheesy

Maybe Portugal should send a request to the FIFA association asking them to allow for more players on the pitch because they will soon have to replace Ronaldo.

I mean, Portugal won the European Championship in the past. In Qatar they were too unpredictable, no consistency. They lost against Morocco in the quarterfinals though, which I think can happen to any team as Morocco was this one surprise team that was about to achieve the impossible. Since they kicked out Spain in the round of 16, I think it is not a nightmare to lose against them although Portugal should have been warned.

But I agree that they should still be counted as a top team that has all chances.

Even now, Portugal is a one man team led by Ronaldo. During the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the coach (Fernando Santos) experimented by benching Ronaldo and giving chances to some of the younger players. It didn't worked well and in the end they lost the match to Morocco and were kicked out from the tournament. And it's not like they don't have any promising younger players. They have quite a few of them, such as João Félix, Gonçalo Ramos, Rafael Leão and Pedro Neto. But none of these players are capable of replacing Ronaldo.

This is so wrong. I have watched a few Portugal games and yes Ronaldo has been an important player for them, but they do have several remarkable players and Ronaldo would be nothing without them. When you talk about a one man show, I could rather understand when you mean a team like Norway with Haaland even though that be wrong as there are players like Martin Ødegaard, but still calling Portugal a one man team is nonsense. Out of the 12 goals that Portugal scored at the World Cup, Ronaldo scored 1. I know he was put on the bench here and there, but a one man team would look differently in terms of the statistics.

Inter vs Atletico Madrid
   1     -        0

Atletico Madrid seemed to be really frustrated because they were so hard to attack to Inter's  defense. Actually, Both Atletico Madrid and Inter did great job, but in this case, Inter did much better in attacking. they are more offensive although they actually also faced some difficulties during the match.

Both teams implemented a different strategy, Inter Milan played with repeated attacks because they are targeting victory at home while Atletico Madrid applied a defensive game and hoped that the match ended in a draw unfortunately Atletico Madrid's defense managed to break in the 80th minute and Inter Milan locked the victory.
It's not unusual to find Atletico Madrid defending in a game where they aren't sure of victory, especially when they are playing a better and in form side like Inter Milan. Worst still in this encounter, Inter is playing from a home side. Simeone would always try to defend and not conceive with hopes that, by some chance they night catch Inter Milan on a counter attack and get something out of it but, how well does this strategy works, you eventually get pressured to conceive. When your not taking the game to them and your defense is constantly been tested, they are sure to find the break at some point and get a winning goal.
AC Milan needs to be more attacking, they've got a squad that give them that attacking power.

But Simeone is also the kind of coach who is ok with a 0-1 for the second leg because he has had some outrageous fights in the past in their home stadium. Losing this game 0-1 doesn't bother him, I am sure about that. Of course if for so long it is tied at 0-0, the goal is and must be to take it home or to get that lucky punch and even win they have the quality to score goals. But at the same time Atletico knew that they are against the best team in Europe maybe next to Manchester City and Real Madrid and you usually don't beat these teams in their home stadium. I can already see in front of my eyes how crazy the second leg will be from the first second to the last.

I would say that Portugal has a pretty good attacking line (even if you don’t take Ronaldo into account): Ramos, Leão, Felix. With these players, the attack should solve all the issues. But if you are talking about replacing Ronaldo in terms of “finding exactly the same”, then this is simply ridiculous  Grin Such players appear once every 100 years, maybe more often, but I think you yourself understand the likelihood that such a player will appear again in the Portuguese national team is not very high.
- snip

If we sum up his physical characteristics + his insane motivation to play throughout his entire career and even beyond (for most football players, their career ends at 35, but not for Ronaldo), then it’s definitely less than in 100 years  Wink
Felix can replace Ronaldo in midfield (I agree that he is unstable), Ramos can replace Ronaldo as a center forward, and Leao can replace him as a winger... but no one can replace him in all positions at once  Grin
But in general, I believe that Portugal has sufficient variety of players and a qualified coach will have no problem putting together any formation he wants from them. Whether Ronaldo will be here or not is not so important (although of course I would like him to appear at least as a substitute at the next World Cup).

I like your post because we are about to define an entire team that only replaces Ronaldo... Cheesy
