5421  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Be a Responsible Gambler on: May 01, 2021, 08:44:39 AM
Everybody knows the daily limit but from saying it to implementing it is a huge gap. Many people can't stick to it although they set a daily limit. They get mad when they lose this limit and say I just want to hit a few more spins and quit but this leads them to losing everything.

Of course, the problem is that to set a daily limit is a rational decision, while when gambling we are often driven by emotions. A problem gambler, as the OP seems to be, is not going to find it useful to make such a rational decision. The best thing to do is to give up gambling for good. It happens like with an alcoholic, the only solution is that he does not drink another drop in his life, because a single drink triggers the old self-destructive pattern.

5422  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Did you take the vaccine? tell us what happend? on: May 01, 2021, 06:17:49 AM
I know what placebo effect is. I just didn't get where you see it in LTU's post. He got some pain in the arm, which is normal and otherwise was feeling well, i.e. not better or worse than before. I think you're reading way too much between the lines.

No, I don't think I'm reading way too much between the lines, and after reflecting on what you say, I would say that you understood that I wanted to criticize the effect of the vaccine in general, the immunizing effect it has against COVID-19 because of the possible placebo effect on mood, and that is not the case.

LTU said:

So, I got Pfizer vaccine today...
I got it today morning and now after more than 12 hours I feel great. There is just little pain in shoulder when I'm moving my hand. All my colleagues who also got vaccine today also feel good.

This could clearly be due to the placebo effect, and I am not saying that the whole vaccine is a placebo effect. This effect could be placebo and the vaccine could be very effective in immunizing against COVID-19.

Then, after my post, LTU nuances:
No, it's not placebo effect. I was feeling great before taking vaccine and I felt great after I took it. Nothing has changed, except that little pain in shoulder.

So after, he says this you say:

What are you talking about? These are quite normal symptoms after the first dose of Pfizer/Moderna.

When you said this, I googled the subject and I see that, indeed, many people report feeling well after receiving the vaccine, but it is still not clear if this is due to a placebo effect or not. But the important thing here is that LTU had already said he felt great before he was given the vaccine.
So in any case, his mood had nothing to do with the vaccine as it may have seemed in his first post (quoted above).

Anyway, as I said, I was not trying to say that the vaccine in general, with all its possible effects, such as the immunizer against COVID-19, works because of a placebo effect.
5423  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Vaccinated people are walking biological time bombs and a THREAT to society on: May 01, 2021, 05:38:18 AM
Yes, moderate supplementation seems like a good idea, especially at higher latitudes. I'm not sure how likely toxicity through overdosing is, but ultra-high dose vitamins aren't a great idea in general.

The thing is that to begin with, vitamin D, although it is so called, is not technically speaking a vitamin, but a prohormone. Overdose toxicity can occur, but you have to take whole bottles every day for it to happen. Sunbathing alone you can't get it.  Also, hypercalcemia, which is the danger of taking high doses of vitamin D, is reversible. It is cured by stopping sunbathing and stopping supplementation. Another thing is that RDAs are very low. 600 IU a day is good for preventing rickets, but not for a stronger immune system. I take between 20K and 30K IU of vitamin D in the winter, which by today's standards is barbaric, and I have noticed nothing but positive effects. No hypercalcemia even going over 100 ng/ml of vitamin D in the blood.

It's worth noting that vitamin D is not a secret magical panacea that is being hidden from us by Big Pharma because it doesn't make them $$$.

Well, I'm not so sure about that. I have said the opposite of what you are asserting, now I will back it up. Vitamin D has a more unknown role (the best known is to bring calcium to the bones), which is to strengthen the immune system:

Vitamin D: its role and uses in immunology

Vitamin D and the Immune System

Vitamin D: modulator of the immune system

An update on vitamin D and human immunity

It is not just a matter of COVID. With a stronger immune system, people would need less medicine.

It's also worth noting in regard to this myth that AZ are providing their vaccine at cost, with no profit motive.

Yes but do Pfizer and the others also manufacture vaccines altruistically and without seeking financial gain?

From what I've read, it seems like only people with serious Vitamin D deficiency ought to take the supplements.

To begin with, as I said before, vitamin D is not a vitamin, although it may seem paradoxical to say so. Then, the current guidelines regarding what is a deficiency are garbage, as they consider that 30 ng/ml are optimal and that a dose of 20k IU is barbaric, when that is what you can get on a summer day by sunbathing moderately for a while.

People should really be careful with self-treatment, even if it's something as innocent as the vitamins, and consult with professionals.

Yes, of course. If I had a life-threatening disease like cancer, I would put myself in the doctor's hands and do what he told me, but for other things I don't trust so much.

For example: some time ago I had put on weight and the doctor gave me some dietary guidelines that are recommended nowadays but they are garbage. Eating five times a day, cereal-based diet, etc. I did what he told me and I didn't stop gaining weight.

Now I do something that is considered barbaric but I have lost a lot of weight, I am not hungry and I feel better than ever: I eat two or maximum three times a day, the basis of the diet being fats. If I go to the doctor and tell him, he will tell me that I am going to faint from skipping meals and to die from a heart attack because of fats. Nothing farther from the truth.

And I could talk about other things, like cholesterol, or how high blood sugar and diabetes can be cured simply by fasting instead of insulin (Therapeutic use of intermittent fasting for people with type 2 diabetes as an alternative to insulin), but I think I'll leave it here because it would be digressing too much.

5425  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Did you take the vaccine? tell us what happend? on: April 30, 2021, 04:36:28 PM
...I don't know if you mean that feeling great  before you get the vaccine is due to some physical causal relationship between the vaccine and mood:

No, it's not placebo effect. I was feeling great before taking vaccine and I felt great after I took it. Nothing has changed,

Let's be clear, "The placebo effect is defined as a phenomenon in which some people experience a benefit after the administration of an inactive "look-alike" substance or treatment. This substance, or placebo, has no known medical effect." - https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-the-placebo-effect-2795466.

Meaning that placebo effect only occurs if the injected medicine/drug/vaccine is inactive and deemed to not have any kinds of medical effects to the body. but he got THE VACCINE "THE REAL VACCINE" therefore, it is not placebo, instead it is the "SIDE EFFECT" of the vaccine, which is known to be temporary.

Really? Have you read what I've written before? I have quoted part of it, leaving the relevant part. Do you really think that someone having a certain mood before being given a drug is because of a side effect of the drug? Lol.

If you were referring to the other people who report a certain mood after vaccine administration, I could understand what you are saying, but not in this case.
5426  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Fate or lack of control - Gambling on: April 30, 2021, 04:29:53 PM
Sometimes it is just fate. Poker is a good example. When you have 10 show downs in a row and are an 80:20 favorite ever single time but you lose it all, that's fate in my opinion. Even if you control yourself and keep playing a solid style, there is not much you can do. Luck is against you, which I would say equates to fate.

Fate doesn't exist, much less in poker. What you call Fate is pure variability of short term results, but a winning poker player even though he has those unfavorable short term results, because he makes EV+ moves, or moves that are profitable in the long run.

5427  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: The fine line between market investment and sports gambling on: April 30, 2021, 04:28:03 PM
It makes sense and we see this in the market as well, the majority of the money is invested in bitcoin and if you invest in it with the intention to hold for the long term then you are not really gambling, but if someone invest in the 997th coin in the market thinking of becoming rich then that person is gambling no matter what they say, the confusion is also exacerbated because they both borrow terms from each other and this confuses people about both being the same when in fact they could not be more different.

Well, I would qualify that by saying that if the person investing in the 997th coin but having great knowledge about it and the market, if perhaps he has inside information, then he is not gambling, he is investing. But well, you get the idea of what you mean. The difference is that in gambling there is a mathematical certainty that is against you, in the long term, while in the investment world that certainty does not exist.

5428  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The first response to satoshi's Bitcoin whitepaper on: April 30, 2021, 04:22:17 PM
He was right, Bitcoin "does not seem to scale to the required size."

Luckily for all of us, people decide to use it as value heaven than everyday transactions and now we have a 50 000 USD Bitcoin.

Satoshi Nakamoto and the rest were true innovators and now there are other coins for everyday usage.

That's what I think. Bitcoin was created as a P2P electronic cash system but if it ends up being more of a store of value than a medium of exchange, as it seems, that's OK. If it is used as a store of value, there will be fewer and larger transactions on average than if it is a medium of exchange, so there won't be a scalability problem.
5429  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Vaccinated people are walking biological time bombs and a THREAT to society on: April 30, 2021, 09:43:58 AM
Seriously though, we know that the data show that the vaccine reduces the likelihood of both infection and transmission. I've posted so many links to professional, expert sources, that are independent of one another, from many different countries around the world, from governments, universities, scientific bodies, etc.
Why would you think that being vaccinated increases the risk of spreading the virus? The thing that increases it is refusing the vaccine, refusing to wears masks and refusing to respect social distancing.

I don't know what you think about the role of vitamin D in all this. There are a lot of articles compiled in:

https://vitamindwiki.com/COVID-19+treated+by+Vitamin+D+-+studies%2C+reports%2C+videos

That it's a website run by a retired engineer, not a doctor, but not a kid writing from his mum's basement either, and he puts links to scientific articles, apart from videos etc.

I used to get colds 2-3 times a year, and the colds lasted quite a while. I say cold including flu or sore throat.  Since I discovered vitamin D like 5 years ago, I have gone to having 0 colds. One a couple of occasions I thought I was starting to get a cold but it didn't last more than 24 hours, and it's a common thing that people who have optimal vitamin D levels say: that they don't get colds and if they do, they don't get them for long and with few symptoms. In principle, those studies linked point out that the same thing would happen with COVID-19.

The pharmaceutical industry is not interested in this because the sun is free and vitamin D as a supplement is cheap and it is not a drug that can only be sold exclusively by the industry, you can buy it in herbalists, for example.

5430  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Did you take the vaccine? tell us what happend? on: April 30, 2021, 03:42:47 AM
That is because of the placebo effect. More psychological than anything else. Unless you have been given some "magic" substance instead of the vaccine, which is highly unlikely.

What are you talking about? These are quite normal symptoms after the first dose of Pfizer/Moderna.

The placebo effect is well known in medicine, and in some cases it is not only psychological effects, but physical markers that improve, although this has nothing to do with the drug administered. In any case, I don't know if you mean that feeling great before you get the vaccine is due to some physical causal relationship between the vaccine and mood:

No, it's not placebo effect. I was feeling great before taking vaccine and I felt great after I took it. Nothing has changed,

I have googled the subject and see reported cases of people feeling fine and speculation that it has something to do with the vaccine. Good. In principle the most logical explanation would seem to me to be placebo effect, but if it is due to the vaccine, I welcome it.
5431  Other / Politics & Society / Re: When will the vaccination end? on: April 30, 2021, 03:19:42 AM
Don't you see the news? Of course there is a plan to vaccinate everyone. Another thing is that it is achieved, but there is talk of herd immunity from 70 vaccinated. I thought this was a disease that would stay with us like the flu, but recently I have seen talk of possible eradication.
5432  Economy / Economics / Re: How a digital EURO may look like on: April 29, 2021, 09:57:56 AM
It is not clear to me. Yes, in theory they say they are concerned about privacy:

Quote
A digital euro would therefore allow people to make payments without sharing their data with third parties, other than what is required by regulation. This differs from private payments, where services are generally offered in exchange for personal data that are then used for commercial purposes.

I actually think, as I think you point out as well, that privacy, if any, is going to be in short supply. What are they going to offer privacy for if a digital Euro is every controller's dream?

In any case, there will always be ways to escape. The ECB will know everything that anyone using the digital euro does but for illicit activities (or pure privacy of licit activities) other fiat currencies, gold and silver coins or cryptos will be used as in Sweden, where cash has practically disappeared.

Regarding the last question, it is not clear to me. I think that both the Yuan, the Dollar and the digital Euro are going to be launched at about the same time, although it seems that the Yuan will be the first, and, when it does, the US and Europe will not want to be left behind, so I don't think it will affect the exchange rate significantly.

I haven't been on the forum long enough to miss him but I do recognize that he was an important person in Bitcointalk, and he created bpip.org if I'm not mistaken, right?

I read the scam accusations and the debate between OgNasty and him, plus about his health problem and his latest posts, but I don't know more details to judge. I hope he is doing well anyway.
5434  Economy / Economics / Re: Biden's IRS Plans Could Boost Crypto Adoption on: April 29, 2021, 06:31:59 AM
Now, if you're a lowlife individual or business who is currently illegally underreporting your tax obligation, the new proposed bank reporting requirement is a threat to your illegal lifestyle.  Sure seems like an incentive to start transacting in crypto, doesn't it?

At the moment what there was on the day it was announced was a fall in the price of Bitcoin. You have to think that most people buy Bitcoin and cryptos on regulated exchanges. I don't know what effect that may have on small fraudsters, because in principle it is logical what you say, but it is difficult today to buy large amounts without KYC procedures.
5435  Economy / Speculation / Re: The next Bitcoin manipulation prediction on: April 29, 2021, 06:24:51 AM
Even if the price of bitcoin were manipulable in some way, it is too large for large price manipulations over prolonged spaces of time. It's a bit like the stock market. A hedge fund can pull down the price of a small-cap company, but the leeway it has with large-cap companies is very little.

Anyway, OP, if you are so concerned about the alleged manipulation, don't buy Bitcoin, or sell what you have. If you have.

5436  Other / Politics & Society / Re: RELIGION IT'S POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE IMPACT ON SOCIETY on: April 29, 2021, 04:03:00 AM
Except that there is no sound, scientific evidence that the earth is older than about 5,000 years.

What there is no scientific evidence for is most of the nonsense you write.

Nowadays religion has a decreasing importance, thank god, we could say, lol.

Historically, religion has primarily been a method of social control. Partly as a tool to enhance cohesion, like a tribal affiliation, fighting together for the glory of your deity, as a proxy for a flag, or other symbol. Partly also as a tool to enforce good behaviour... god as an all-seeing all-knowing invisible policeman... if transgressions against the prescribed moral code are automatically punished in the afterlife, then you as a leader have less need to surveil your citizens.

The clearest example of this is the Middle Ages, when religion served to reinforce the subjugation of the majority of the population in the estates. One had to suffer in this life because God would reward in the next.

5437  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Did you take the vaccine? tell us what happend? on: April 29, 2021, 03:50:24 AM
So, I got Pfizer vaccine today. I still wasn't decided whether to take vaccine or no, but today I got phone call very unexpected and I didn't had enough time to think and say no. Whatever.
I got it today morning and now after more than 12 hours I feel great. There is just little pain in shoulder when I'm moving my hand. All my colleagues who also got vaccine today also feel good. Let's wait what will happen tonight or tomorrow.
I will get second dose after 3 weeks - on 19th May.

That is because of the placebo effect. More psychological than anything else. Unless you have been given some "magic" substance instead of the vaccine, which is highly unlikely.
5438  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Vaccinated people are walking biological time bombs and a THREAT to society on: April 29, 2021, 03:33:11 AM
OP can't be taken seriously, he keeps trolling. He says that people who get vaccinated are going to die from it but I'm still waiting for him to give concrete data:

As long as people continue to mask and lockdown, Covid will stay around much longer. The fastest way to get rid of Covid is to take one of the Covid vaccines. You will die sooner that way,

Ok, give us a deadline. Be more precise.

What percentage of those vaccinated will die and how long will it take on average from the time they are vaccinated?

This way, if you are right we can acknowledge it and if you are not right, we will tell you that you have a big mouth.

For him it is safer to pray, that's all there is to it.
5439  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Reason why merit is giving to who merited them on: April 28, 2021, 04:16:36 PM
I'm not really sure why there are such topics on the reason Merits are given out but it's pretty simple. It's up to whoever wants to give to who.
Maybe some people like OP are so concern about it. Not a bad thing actually, since his observation are quite right.

For me it is pretty obvious that he is trying to fish some merit. He is simply telling us how cool the merit system is, which I understand does not add much. This is not the first time we have seen such a post, nor the last.
5440  Other / Off-topic / Re: Oil/fat from one of the most disliked meats on: April 28, 2021, 04:09:05 PM
The fancy factory oil you use is probably vegetable oil which is 99% of the time crap. The only healthy vegetable oil is olive oil and consumed in moderation, because of the linoleic acid. Also, if you use olive oil for cooking you shouldn't cook for long periods of time as it can lose some of the benefits.

As for oil extracted from pork, I had never heard of it. I have sometimes used lard for cooking, but for pure fats I usually use butter, cream or mascarpone. I do IF and keto. Regarding IF, I prefer to do it pure, without taking anything until I break the fast. I have sometimes tried putting butter or cream in my coffee but I think it works better for me without taking any calories.
