2301  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Anyone tried a VIA QuadCore for mining? on: June 28, 2012, 03:53:43 AM
http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/processors/quadcore/index.jsp

It seems it has hardware support for SHA256. Any idea on performance?
Only recently did it become available on a motherboard, but I'm not interested in the formfactor that it became available on. However, the Quad Core is simply 2 Dual Core chips on one package, so testing a Dual Core should get some close numbers.

I do have a Dual Core (Zotac ZBOX NANO based on the VX900H chipset), so maybe I'll test it sometime.

This makes it sound like it's got specific instructions or features for SHA256, sort of like SB's Quick Sync for video encoding.
From http://www.via.com.tw/en/downloads/whitepapers/processors/WP080529VIA_Nano.pdf

The VIA Nano provides two of the most commonly used, SHA-1 and SHA-256, which are able to encrypt information at rates of up to 5 gigabits/sec.

I've been tearing apart and repairing computers and electronics for 15 years and I've never once fried anything due to static. I've tried intentionally to fry things with static, to no avail. My brother did fry his ethernet port on his laptop due to static, but that's not exactly a situation you'd expect to use a wrist band anyway.

IMO you have been lucky, or probably you are situated in a high humidity region. It's akin to not wearing seat belts and claiming one has been accident free.
2303  Other / Off-topic / Re: BFL Quality Control on: June 24, 2012, 06:47:54 AM
I mean no offense to old ladies.  But THIS IS THE PERSON who BFL has doing quality control?!!?!?!?!?  That explains why GigaVPS mini-rig died in one freaking day LOL  --

WHERE is the Antistatic wrist band? Can't imagine that BFL chose to ignore basic safety measures.

In my experience 80Plus Gold series PSU handle loads at the limit very well without heating up a lot. Vanilla 80Plus PSUs do not cut it with the heat output of the PSU, my two ANTEC 80 PLUS get very hot (touch thermometer), while the Seasonic and Superflowers 80Plus gold stay warm in a room with 110F ambient temps.
2307  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: It's (not) time for an ASIC subforum. on: June 24, 2012, 05:59:33 AM
Until the first ASIC product is verified, I do not think it's a good idea to create a sub forum.

I wonder how much stuff Intel removed to put 50 cores on a card.
Here's a pdf depicting the organization of Larrabee, the precursor of Phi.

I had a similar issue when i had daisy chained one 1x-1x riser cable with another 1x-16x cable. So removing one cable solved the problem for me. You can try to replace the 1x-16x riser cable with a replacement and see if it helps.

TLDR: Probably someone from North Carolina! AFAIK bfl is based off KCMO.

Who is Road Runner Hold?

It's the internet service name of Time Warner. It's a very popular ISP in Kansas City Missouri. source (stayed in KCMO)

Edit: Reading though the Wiki on Larrabee... it was going to be a 2 TFLOP card, while Phi is only 1 TFLOP. Wonder what happened.
The 2TFLOP estimate for Larabee is for single precision floating point operation, while the 1TFLOP quoted for Phi is for double precision.

power draw
I think 200 Watts. Here are some pics, I can see the two 3x2  PCI-E power connectors.

Huge jump in network mining speed! Does anyone have any idea what could cause this? We are now around last year's high.

Mind you it's 1TFLOPS Double Precision.. http://newsroom.intel.com/community/intel_newsroom/blog/2012/06/17/latest-intel-xeon-processors-e5-product-family-achieves-fastest-adoption-of-new-technology-on-top500-list
IMO, no single chip GPU has that kind of performance for double precision arithmetic.
2317  Bitcoin / Hardware / proASIC low power FPGA on: June 19, 2012, 12:20:48 AM
PROASIC FPGA is a compromise between ASIC and FPGA
http://www.actel.com/products/pa3/

Much Lower power consumption than SRAM FPGA.

Axcelerator FPGA can be programmed only once and looks like it's a bit faster than proASIC.
http://www.actel.com/products/axcelerator/default.aspx

IGLOO FPGA can be programmed multiple times because instead of anti-fuse, a flash cell is used. Very low power consumption.

The largest device has 24,000 Flip Flops, or around 1/10 the size of Spartan6 LX 150

SHA-256 hashing core for proASIC
