I work for a university, do oceanographic research and system development. everything from submersibles and ocean engineering to laser imaging. I love this stuff. All of my stuff is leased or temporary so I never stay in one place very long.

yes, but please tell me you're going to mine from the boat.

I could, but these will be going in a data enter I lease space from. The ships actually have pretty fast Internet. 100mbs+. Even a smaller gpu farm on a ship power wise is not an issue, except during an emergency. The ship uses 4 gallons of diesel to travel its length (200 feet). 95 percent of the fuel used is for propulsion.

No wonder 16 ships pollute as much as all the cars in the world. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1229857/How-16-ships-create-pollution-cars-world.html

1964  Other / Off-topic / Setting up a distributed file system in Linux: Looking for tips on: March 10, 2013, 11:06:32 AM
I want to regularly backup by 24TB data array onto a 30TB distributed file system.
I want to create a 3 x 10TB distributed file system from 3 servers, which I want to mount onto my primary server which has the main data array.
Any tips would be great.
1965  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [AVALON] - I got my ASIC Thread (Batch #2) on: March 10, 2013, 11:03:24 AM
Both batches can be shipped in parallel in theory.  Batch#2 skus cost a bit more than Batch#1, it may equate to faster turnover / service.
1966  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Feedbacks on Avalon-Asic.com on: March 10, 2013, 10:54:36 AM
the site says that batch 2 is not available Sad
Any experience with this competing product ?

I just received my Avalon! I didn't get a tracking number in advance, and just yesterday afternoon DHL said they didn't see anything coming my way. So don't assume it's not on the way if DHL doesn't find it in the system.
Great news! Congrats! Happy mining.
1969  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [AVALON] - I got my ASIC Thread (Batch #1) on: March 08, 2013, 08:26:25 PM

This is wonderful news! Congrats!
1970  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Question: Where can I find Avalon ASIC Batch #1 install guide? on: March 08, 2013, 08:29:53 AM
OK... I connected Avalon to my laptop's ethernet port then switch the power on, but the light of ethernet port was dark. So I switch off the power for now. Was there something I missed out? Huh
Connect using an ethernet switch.

1) Connect laptop to ethernet switch
2) Connect Avalon to same ethernet switch
1971  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Newbie questions for Litecoin on: March 08, 2013, 08:03:06 AM
how do i set up the wallet to solo mine?

Solo mining today on LTC isn't a smart idea...
Try another small cryto-currency like BQC if you want make that only for experience(ppl will help you out of how you make the server/daemon run and how to configure your miner, BQC is Scrypt based as well), for getting real money try pooled mining like coinotron, poll-x, etc.

What's the advantage of BQC over LTC? Are there any markets and charts for BQC network?

Go grab some 3/4 x 1" stakes at the hardware store, some wood glue, masking tape, and two scraps of plywood. Find some black paint in the free section of craigslist.

Chill a six pack of beer and grab a hand saw.

The final result will look like this:

Have you ever connected two risers in serial?
Yes, I regularly do it. It's a hit/miss with 16X risers, but mostly hits with 1X risers in serial.
1973  Other / Off-topic / Re: Something very strange is happening with my internet connection. on: March 08, 2013, 07:56:47 AM
Run this in a batch file, if you're on windows:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
arp -d *
nbtstat -R
nbtstat -RR
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns

I restarted the computer, and it seems to working fine now. I will do this next time it acts us. BTW, do I do the above in DOS? Seriously, for I ain't got no clue when it comes to these things. I can figure it out via Google I suppose. I'm a HTML and CSS guy, with a little PHP thrown in for good measure. That's all I know about code.
Who's your dns provider? Are you using your ISP servers for your DNS needs? Try OpenDNS servers or google dns servers and check if all is ok next time.
