1501  Economy / Speculation / Re: Massive rebound incoming on: July 06, 2013, 04:17:32 AM
Figured the same thing last week.

The BTC/LTC trade on BTC-e has been awesome. I'm mining Litecoins like crazy, and buying up cheap Bitcoins. Whether it's next week, or Autumn, the price will eventually go back up.

I like this idea.
1502  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: July 05, 2013, 11:30:08 PM
i'm in the process of exchanging out psu's.

hopefully someone will stop me before i do something stupid.  my Seasonic psu doesn't have all the exact same cord connectors that correspond with the Chinese Enermax.  i've mixed and matched all the possible cords and i'm about to end up plugging 2 pci-e connectors into the pcb of the avalon without the ground.  in other words, it's an 8 hole connector and i'm having to leave off 2 of the holes (b/c of the mismatching shapes) which i'm pretty sure is the ground.

please someone tell me if this is a big mistake as i'm about to reassemble everything and power it up.

Atleast put some pictures man!
1503  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [HOWTO] flash your jalapeno to 8+ ghs on: July 05, 2013, 09:39:44 PM
Just want to report another successful flashing of the Jalapeņo. My device had the earlier firmware on it. While running it with this version and the case all closed up, cgminer 3.2.1 was showing me this:
Code:
BAJ 0:  max 84C 4.12V | 6.364G/4.448Gh/s | A:8972 R:160 HW:9 U: 39.90/m
[GetInfo] => DEVICE: BitFORCE SC FIRMWARE: 1.0.0 PROCESSOR 3: 193 MHz PROCESSOR 7: 192 MHz ENGINES: 28 FREQUENCY: 189 MHz
XLINK MODE: MASTER XLINK PRESENT: YES --DEVICES IN CHAIN: 0 --CHAIN PRESENCE MASK: 00000000 OK 0x00

Then I opened it up, scraped off the old worn thermal pads, put some new Fujipoly 1.0mm thermal pads cut to size with an x-acto knife, modified the code that decommissions engine so that at least one valid nonce is returned(thanks to @ckolivas for that idea), modified the frequency index to 8, flashed the modded firmware, downloaded the 3.3.1 rev of cgminer, and let it operate with no case, and now cgminer 3.3.1 is showing me this:
Code:
BAJ 0:  max 55C 3.91V | 8.479G/8.126Gh/s | A:75792 R:350 HW:3036 U: 41.54/m
[GetInfo] => DEVICE: BitFORCE SC FIRMWARE: 1.2.5 IAR Executed: NO CHIP PARALLELIZATION: YES @ 2 QUEUE DEPTH:40
PROCESSOR 3: 15 engines @ 262 MHz -- MAP: FFFE PROCESSOR 7: 15 engines @ 268 MHz -- MAP: FFFE THEORETICAL MAX: 7950 MH/s ENGINES: 30 FREQUENCY: 283 MHz
XLINK MODE: MASTER CRITICAL TEMPERATURE: 0 XLINK PRESENT: YES DEVICES IN CHAIN: 1 CHAIN PRESENCE MASK: 00000001 OK 0x00

2 extra engines operating, albeit with higher hardware error rate: from around 0.1% to 3.9%. Running cooler now too, but I think that has far less to do with properly installing a fresh pair of thermal pads, and more to do with operating with no case surrounding all that hot air.

It cost me a little over $100 in materials to perform this upgrade so it's kind of like that 2Gh/s bump BFL was offering, but clearly I got a little more bang for the buck and it was tons more fun. And woah, now I've got the firmware code to look over too.

@mmaniac, as you can see, I am also seeing voltage readings from cgminer around 3.95-4.00v. I don't know if that's good or bad, but at least you have company.
great job! btw how did you get to this GetInfo screen?

When in doubt change to a different pool,
Power off and then on after 60 secs.
1506  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Butterfly Labs Mini Rig review on: July 03, 2013, 09:24:42 PM
To anyone who might be misled by this post, those photos are not of a 500 GH/s BFL MiniRig.

  -  The first couple photos are of an early dev unit built with only a few boards and no control module.

  -  The second group of photos are of an FPGA mini rig prototype from 2011.

No wonder I was confused, since the MR SC was supposed to come with 2 1500W PSUs, and the one in the picture has only one.
1507  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What does Yemen teach us about gun control? on: July 03, 2013, 09:21:56 PM
Yemen is apparently one of the freest, if not the freest, country where it comes to gun rights.  I found this video discussing the gun culture there.

I know very little about that part of the world and Yemen in particular.  I'm curious if anyone more familiar can tell me what effect the pervasiveness of weapons has on Yemeni society.  Do people there generally feel safer or freer because of the guns, as some advocates would predict?

My dad visited Yemen on UN work, and he said shopkeepers regularly left gold items unattended Smiley going out for gossip, etc.

1513  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Is Buttefly Labs breaking the law? on: July 02, 2013, 07:41:27 AM
Butterfly Labs, El Monte Street, Leawood, KS  Smiley

Probably one of the choices should be Kansas laws.
1514  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Say I order a 5GH Jalapeno Jul 1, when do you think it will arrive at my door on: July 02, 2013, 01:05:53 AM
Since I hear that Paypal just froze their account and refuses to accept payments for them anymore, investigation pending, I say never.

EDIT:

Note that Paypal seems to have just disappeared as a method of payment for chip orders from BFL.  BTC or direct bank transfers only.

Guess there's strict no return policy on the chip orders. Paypal still on for devices though.
1515  Economy / Services / Re: Is there any interest in BFL Jalapeno flashing upgrade service (US only)? on: July 02, 2013, 12:20:40 AM
Just curious -- would you be allowing yourself to be held accountable for any percentage of damages done during the process or would the risk lay 100% with the purchaser of your service?
Although utmost care would be taken while opening the case, flashing, and re-shipping, in case of a bust, my maximum limit of indemnity would be to order a new Jalapeno from BFL.

1518  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Chinese 'Beehive' ASIC deivce? Any info on this? on: July 01, 2013, 09:28:10 PM
It's a Avalon clone. I did not get a good look at the chips though if it were marked Avalon or Beehive. Any inputs?
1519  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Say I order a 5GH Jalapeno Jul 1, when do you think it will arrive at my door on: July 01, 2013, 09:01:13 PM
Ordered today using Paypal.
1520  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Anyway to block miners in China? on: July 01, 2013, 11:16:23 AM
Don't worry, BFL will catch up later with 2PH, so far they just warmed up
Any source? or is it just a conjecture?
