It may have more to do with ASIC quality of the chip and not the card manufacturing company.
The leakage power of Tahiti chips (28nm) is hideous, so much so that a 50% ASIC quality 7970 chip can draw almost 1.8X more power than a 90% ASIC quality chip during hot days (same voltage, clock, etc.).

Let's see who has the last  Cheesy
- So Oct 31 was a no-go for ASIC in the wild. Majority of the voters were correct in their guess. Some best-effort promises were broken. Waiting until Nov 30.

It's a proof of concept. " capable of factoring a composite number -- in this case the number 15 -- into its constituent prime factors, 3 and 5."

Before, I needed a pretty beefy server, and it was wicked

Hey Inaba, what would the specs of this server? Just curious, nothing else.
2187  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How much do you pay for power? on: August 19, 2012, 11:15:12 PM
I just joined a budget plan with my power company which bills me $84/month regardless of usage Cheesy
Really! that's awesome. Which state / region is that in?
2188  Other / Archival / Re: Pictures of your mining rigs! on: August 19, 2012, 10:34:16 PM
I have added a new vent with a 80mm fan and dryer hose.
The total power consumption for the rigs in the room is 2200Watts.

I can do the WRite enable (a.k.a. shorting) (using a professional soldering station) for you. The charge is $25, you pay 2-way shipping US only. No guarantees that the card will work after that, but I will do my best effort to re-flash / revive it.

PM me if interested.
2190  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Cheap on: August 19, 2012, 10:03:33 PM
Anything below $10 is cheap at the moment. Guys do not forget that in just a few months time, miners will be adding 50% BTC of the current amounts a day.
2191  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Is my GPU dying? on: August 19, 2012, 08:33:45 AM
My shader unlock 6950 was fine mining at 930MHz @ 1.200V all day long. I had it at that speed for a couple of weeks with no issues, but it randomly started crashing again and again. It won't even run stable at 900MHz @ 1.200V without giving a BSOD after 5-10 minutes of mining. I haven't changed any settings which would make it do this. It's still fine for gaming at 920MHz @ 1.200V. Temperatures are always below 80°C. I just get the feeling that the GPU is on its way out and I can't understand why it was perfectly stable but now it's not.

If I flick the BIOS switch back to the original BIOS it's even more unstable. It has to be over volted on the stock BIOS just to mine at stock clocks without crashing.

I would first try a different computer, and then check if the fan is spinning good and heatsink fins are not gunked out.

That is just wonderfull news Cheesy

I'll be ordering another 7970 in a couple of days.

Thank you
Good luck with your new acquisitions Smiley
2195  Economy / Speculation / Re: The Danger Zone on: August 17, 2012, 09:55:25 AM
Rise to $14.xx is on marginally lower volume. If someone sells a chunk of 1000 or so BTC we would be kissing $13.xx again.

2197  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 4 dead PSUs, there HAS to be a commonly failing component on: August 17, 2012, 09:20:11 AM
Antec TruePower TP650 died on me. When I plugged it in, I could hear a click and nothing. Upon opening the PS, I realized that there was a short circuit in the big coil on the top LEFT corner.

The epoxy glue stuck to the coil and a plastic sheet had melted and become carbon due to the heat. Somehow the glue reacted with the enamel on the coil windings and removed some enamel and the carbonized glue was creating the short circuit. I scraped away all the black deposits and washed it thoroughly with IPA, and the PS was good again. Just a heads up for the adventurous.

2199  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What are FPGA's? on: August 16, 2012, 01:00:22 AM
What are FPGA miners?

I found this online. Some guy who uses fpga for some computing problems. There is a nice analogy with pictures on what is FPGA. This same chip can be used for hashing and thus mining.
