2121  Economy / Speculation / Re: I do believe bitcoin price will boom when we switch from GPU to ASIC mining on: October 20, 2012, 06:01:07 AM
When we use GPU, money from miners go to AMD's hand and doesn't comeback. When we use ASIC, the asic companies will use a portion of that money to promote their business, attract more users & miners come to bitcoin economy. This causes a positive feedback loop and bitcoin economy will boom. Right now, butterflylabs are promoting its business using google ads.

Actually reward halving seem to coincide with mining using ASIC devices. This may lead to a huge arms race, and the price may boom due to speculation.
2122  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Power supplys .. HELP on: October 19, 2012, 09:02:42 PM
long story short:

2x5850
1x5830
1x5770

power supplys are LC power 550w and LC power 650w.

650w powers the MBO and 1x 5850, and 550W is on other 5850 and 5830.

the problem is that after doing some numbers, i am afraid to plug in that last card (5770), im afraid psus will fail.

it says on them +12v rail 368w, on both of them.

for now its running without the 5770 and its super fine. do u think i can freely plug in the last card 5770?
if there is not enough power, will there be damage to cards or PSUs , or will it just shutdown, restart etc..

Use a P3Killawatt and measure your actual power at the wall socket. Smiley Since the cards all use 12v rails, you will have guesstimate of your 12v draw.

What memory settings are you using?  I can't seem to get mine below about 700...

Thanks!

Wow thats a big GPU mining setup Smiley How do you do thermal management of your home?

That's only a portion of it.  Wink  71Ghash total.

Maintaining thermal management without making it too hot/cold has been a learning experience.  Smiley  I've been doing it for about a year and a half now though.

That's epic my friend  Smiley

They are trying to get Bitcoin on the cheap. I would consider it a bullish sentiment more than anything.

2128  Other / Off-topic / Re: Block Reward Halving + BFL Equipment = What for Mining / Price In Your Opinion? on: October 18, 2012, 07:28:35 AM
Firstly, this post belongs in either Speculation or Mining Speculation,  [Edit: I see that has happened already.]

The combination of the reward being split in two and the hash rate skyrocketing is going to have effects on mining operations and market price.
What do you think the outcome will be.

This is a prediction, and predictions are hard -- especially about the future.  Nobody knows, but I'll take a stab at it.

Day 0 is expected roughly around November 30th, plus or minus a week:

Day T-10: Four of the five ASIC manufacturers claim to be finalizing the design / optimizing / trying to resolve some nagging power issue / whatever, yet not a single person that pre-paid for an ASIC has one in-hand.
Day T-8: Difficulty of 3.5 million and exchange rate of $15 mean profitability is still acceptable for GPU miners paying average electric rates or less.
Day T-5: A lot more "N Ghash/s for sale" listings will start to appear
Day T-4: Difficulty for Litecoin rises as miners experiment, causing there to be no chance of profit from Litecoin mining either.
Day T-3: Block 209,664 -- last difficulty adjustment before the block subsidy reward drops (fact, not a prediction)
Day T-1: Last day that anywhere near 7,200 BTC is produced (fact, not a prediction)
Day 0: Block 210,000 hits and only about 3,600 are produced (fact, not a prediction)
Day 1: Blocks slow to about 11 minutes as some GPU miners realize basic math and power down.
Day 2: Exchange rate volatile, both up and down, but returns to previous levels -- about $15.
Day 3: Anger and vitriol from GPU miners who are still "underwater" on their GPUs purchased in 2012.
Day 4: Anger and vitriol from FPGA miners who somehow didn't realize that "much more efficient" doesn't protect against a revenue drop of 50%
Day 5: Blocks slow to about 12 minutes as more GPU miners realize the payouts are dismal and begin to proceed past "denial", the first step in the grieving process,
Day 6: ASIC hardware developers see an even greater number of prepayments for hardware.  Much gnashing of teeth on the forums.
Day 7: Hashing on CoinLab's GPU network grows tremendously as miners cash in their built-up loyalty credits.
Day 8: Nearly all NVidia GPUs that were used for mining are now either computing with CoinLab or have been decommissioned.
Day 9: Gamers elated over some really good AMD and NVidia graphics cards available "really, really cheap" on eBay.
Day 10: Blocks slow to about 13 minutes, as not only did the block reward subsidy drop but so did the frequency of blocks -- making mining bring in even less revenue each day.
Day 11: Speculators hoping for the "doubling" of the exchange rate realize it didn't happen (or perhaps already happened, from $5-ish, over the summer), and sell off a little  Exchange rate drops to $12-ish.
Day 12: ASIC manfuacturers claim to be finalizing the design / optimizing / trying to resolve some nagging power issue / whatever, yet not a single person that pre-paid for an ASIC has one in-hand.
Day 13: Block 211,680 - difficulty adjusts.  Drops 15%.  Back to one block every ten minutes.
Day 14: Mining operators are still seeing electric bills from the previous month's consumption.  Even more anger, vitriol and gnashing of teeth.
Day 15: Christmas-related activities overtake bitcoin as being the event more important to many mining operators.
Day 25: The daily "average price" remains in a range between $12 and $15.
Day 26: Many "slightly used" GPU cards land in wrapped boxes under trees.  Others, particularly those who had a larger investment in their GPU rigs, are using the phrase "bah, humbug" more than they had in any prior holiday season.
Day 27: Difficult adjusts, dropping another 5%.  Yawn.
Day 30: ASIC manufacturers claim to be finalizing the design / optimizing / trying to resolve some nagging power issue / whatever, yet not a single person that pre-paid for an ASIC has one in-hand.

I would agree with everything you said with one minor change somewhere between day 2 and day 10.

Day X:  GPU miners still "underwater" on their GPUs learn about Litecoin and attempt to keep mining for a possible payoff using the Litecoin system.

They eventually fail and give up in frustration harboring a lifelong deep seated resentment for all cryptocurrency because of their basic lack of understanding about the reason behind cryptocurrency and their shallow desire to be a part of a “money for nothing” scheme.

Disagree with money for nothing, miners are providing service and security for the network, including vetting even better technology like ASIC.

78 percent of Bitcoin currency stashed under digital mattress, study finds
Significantly fewer digital coins are in circulation than previously presumed.

Mathematician Dorit Ron and Adi Shamir (the "S" in the widely used RSA cryptography scheme) arrived at that finding by downloading the entire Bitcoin history and following the trail of some 180,000 transactions.

Had similar problem fans moving just a tad, and a click from the PSU nothing else.
Apparently It was my power supply Antec TP 650. A coil was shorting inside, apparently enamel had worn off where some glue on the coil has burned and was causing a short. Scraped off the carbonized glue and it started working again.
2132  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: GPU farms moving over to Litecoin on: October 15, 2012, 02:43:45 AM
I dont have a huge capability compared to a farm, but I am moving my 3 * 6770s + 10 * CPU cores over to LTC this week. I have 2 FPGAs that will remain mining BTC.

Also busy building a 800W wind turbine and integrating the storage and a synchronised inverter so to have $0.00kW/hr after payback. Total set up cost me <$150 from scrap parts (windmill, battery + inverter).

Hey, where did you get the scraps for the windmill? looks like a neat project.

How do you mine Litecoins with GPUs? Which software do you use?
edit: (I need one for Windoze)

cgminer
cgminer --scrypt

Just how crazy is it going to get? Anyone starting early on the Litecoin switch over?

I've moved my complete farm to Litecoin more than 1 month ago. I had 18 GHash in BTC mining, and no way I'm waiting for those 60 GHashs ASIC to come by and make my farm completely irrelevant.

Quote
however... those glory days are ending in a hurry and it'll quickly eqaulize out to what BTC mining is worth due to natural market forces.

It's more that GPU will still be relevant for a good chunk of time with Litecoin, while they are going to be almost useless with Bitcoin. Litecoin being more profitable is a great bonus too!

In your opinion how much more profitable LTC mining has been compared to BTC?

It's not about opinion, it's about facts, check the top-right corner:
http://coinotron.com/coinotron/AccountServlet?action=home

The lowest I saw was 1.2 times the profit you can make with BTC. Usually, it's around 1.4 to 1.5 times more profitable.

Thank you very much. This is enlightening. The gap is closing fast with the LTC diff rising quickly

2136  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Need help flashing Radeon 6950 on: October 14, 2012, 06:28:34 PM
Ok, this story is kinda convoluted... But I bought a 6950 with fan issues recently in hope of repairing it. This card has given me nothing but trouble...

I could go through all the things I have tried but I'll just say that this is the only solution left.

Anyway, the card is a non-reference HIS Radeon 6950 2gb. It does not have a bios switch but it does have a spot where one would go. From what I can tell, HIS used the reference PCB design for this card... But didn't include a bios switch.

***before anyone says it can't be flashed***
I have read several threads of people flashing it... it working... and wanting to go back to the original bios. But their methods have not worked for my card.
***anyways***

The fan will not spin up. I believe that the fan controller is out on the card. It will however run at the minimum default speed set in bios. Hence: If I can change the min value I can set it to like 50 or 60% and the card will be usable.

I also wouldn't mind unlocking the additional shaders if possible (it is an option in RBE and is not grayed out).

What I have tried:

I have tried flashing the rom in RBE... I get the error that the rom can't be erased.

I have tried flashing the rom via command prompt as administrator with the commands (it is the second card in the comp):

atiflash -unlockrom 1

atiflash -f -p 1 original.bios

I get the error:

ROM not erased

Is there anything else I can try? I have read that you can short the bios chip via the 1st and 8th pin to get it flashed... I cannot however figure out which chip is the bios chip... There are several voltage regulators on this card that look similar... If it helps I can take a picture or two though.

Any help you can give would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys,
Andrew

You have to either solder or use conductive pen to disable  the wr protect pin of the eeprom chip i.e. connect the wr protect pin to vcc.

BIOS chip is beneath the heatsink, on the GPU side. IT's a 8pin EEPROM.

Btw the tiny card next to the 7990 Devil 13 is a standard size 7950    Grin

2138  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / ~ on: October 13, 2012, 10:30:57 AM
Is it getting 2x7970 numbers ? Yes
power draw of Devil 13 is sketchy. It's around 300 - 350W at 925MHz GPU / 775MHz MEM.
Voltage of GPU 1 can be controlled easily. GPU 2 is kind of jimmy rigged and has a weird bios (tried flashing it with at-least dozen different 7970 and 7950 bioses, no fish), and no voltage control is available.

Hey we are solo mining litecoin over here and we have over 100 reject blocks with 3-4 GH/s over the past few days.

Any idea why we are getting so many reject blocks?

We got 1 block confirm in the first hour, and now its rejectsville!

Reduce intensity to 11 for Radeon VLIW 4, 5 or to 12 for GCN cards and try again
