701  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Monero (MRO) Speculation thread on: July 09, 2014, 03:06:29 AM
Still waiting for a real anon coin

You're waiting, but the train is starting to leave the station.

I'm assuming you are still long on XMR? I was too until very recently but with the price approaching below $2 levels, I don't know what to think anymore.

Bitcoins price dropped below $100 many times with many people having bought in at >$200, the people who held on and believed made 3 - 6 times return, the fickel speculators lost.

If you bought because of of hype or pumping power, then it's perhaps time to leave. If you bought because of the fundamentals, then it's time to buy more.

Why is there so much wrong? I hope anyone help me, thank you very much!

Please please.
When you start bitmonerod
Type :
set_log 0
and stop reading it.

Perhaps the log should read the current progress of chain download by default, and nothing else?

Aren't some of the messages important?  If so what setting would give you those?

Some are, but very few. You can change your logging level if you need to see more messages.

At the moment my client runs red text all the time, yet I see no change to the usability of Monero. I can send and receive coins with no issue.

I just think the bombardment of messages confuses the user and serves no real purpose. They are warnings in a very minor way and relate more to the state of the network than how your client is handling it.

If the progress bar stops progressing then perhaps have an option to reveal more messages.

Fast? Hilarious. I'll check back in a year, and I doubt that it'll be ready for prime time even then. You are the one who is misinformed if you think Monero is even close to being even usable.

Interesting.

I have moved lots of Monero around and run into no issues at all.

I see, you're not misinformed, you're the one trying to misinform. I will remember you as a liar.

Who cares if you can use it? I'm assuming that you have extensive cryptocurrency knowledge. If your coin can't be used by a moron, how do you expect it to go mainstream?

Bitcoin can't be used by a moron at the moment. You need a reality check.
Considering that I've taught people that are computer illiterate how to use Bitcoin, I'd disagree.

Show me the people you have taught to use Bitcoin, and I will teach them to use Monero.

Monero might even be easier, as you don't have to deal with more than one receiving address.

Darkcoin FUD:

I already explained to you in another thread that masternodes will be trustless through encrypted data. Darkcoin made serious improvements to Coinjoin, Gmaxwell's comments refer to the old version. Point number 4 is abject bullshit because there are already users of Darkcoin who are not criminals. Also I'm glad if the devs have alot of Darkcoin. I wouldn't support the project if they didn't.

The coinjoin concept is trustless by default. How does encrypting data make a difference? You seriously have no idea what you are talking about.
If the data is unencrypted, and an entity owned a large number of nodes, they may be able to unmask a small % of transactions. Encryption solves this issue.

It doesn't, because if you own a large number of nodes, you can map out the in's and out's of all your nodes and build up a reasonable graph of connections between your own nodes. The fact that it is encrypted makes no difference.

I have been reading the Darkcoin forums, and I see this exchange over and over again:

"It doesn't matter if someone owns a large amount of masternodes, anonymity is already good anyway"

"STFU, once we get the masternodes having no idea what they are transacting it'll be ok"

I am paraphrasing here, but the Darkcoin followers are not asking real technical questions, no one is running models of the masternode network or offering mathematical reasoning behind their fantasy.

A fool and their money are soon parted...

The amount of ownership of the masternode network is of the highest importance, and the technology behind making the masternodes have no idea what they are transacting may not even be possible.

Do all Monero addresses start with 4?

I'm not sure, it might be a hardcoded default.

I'm not sure why florida.haunted is being a jerk either...

Darkota, Gmaxwell was referring to the original implementation of Coinjoin. Darkcoin made significant improvements. Also, the data that moves between masternodes will be encrypted, making Darksend trustless. The instamine is inconsequential when it comes to adoption. In the end, Darkcoin is a far more practical solution for privacy.

Monero is now growing at only double Bitcoin's weekly mb chain additions, so Monero is perfectly practical even without the GUI (Which is coming).

Also the masternodes being encrypted does not solve the issue that the nodes can record what they are doing.

I have to ask, do you even know what you are talking about? Because: "Also, the data that moves between masternodes will be encrypted, making Darksend trustless" shows that you are completely mistaken. The encryption has nothing to do with making the transactions trustless, they are already trustless, that is the point of coinjoin, go back and read the original coinjoin concept and see trustless in the first post.

The trustless joining of transactions has nothing to do with requiring encryption. And this still doesn't solve the issue where a masternode can simply record it's in's and out's and thus un-anonymising the transactions.

What's the prize? They're both dead on arrival. Bloat bloat bloat.

The pool bloat is now over, the Monero chain grows about 40mb per week. This is a good deal for an anonymous coin.

So it's not "bloat, bloat, bloat".

Do some research and you'll be smarter for it.
It seems to me that before entering a race, your vehicle should at least be able to move.

Adaptive block sizing means right now it's hard to get money around in XMR chain because it is saturated. However, over the next hour the blockchain will expand its blocksize and this will be less of an issue. Please wait for your tx to be included in the blockchain.

Just wait for your tx to be included. That'll work well. You guys are a riot.

Except we are moving, and fast.

You're either misinformed or just spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt.

"You win"

Actually no.

Monero is now only growing at double the bitcoin blockchain rate.

20mb vs 40mb per week.

So you're either saying that it's not worth having an anonymous coin if the blockchain is double the size per week than Bitcoin, or you just have no idea what you're talking about.

This isn't even a competition. Monero's long term competition is Bitcoin with Side chains, the CryptoNote war is already over.

I don't think CN coins are going anywhere, anytime soon. There's still a ton of development work to bring them to something resembling a marketable product. Even then, no one will want to run the client because the blockchain will be massive, and the resource use will be tremendous. Centralizing the network with light clients is not a solution.

Seems that BBR has an edge here at the moment, please correct me if i'm wrong

An edge? The edge is similar in scope to Litecoins edge over Bitcoin.

A lot of hype over small changes made out to be massive advantages.

I remember someone saying something that is worthwhile to note :

What if you paid your dentist in bitcoin the first time you had an appointment , the next time you go he would know your balance and charge accordingly

That is actually very true. since bitcoin is so transparent, everyone will see your balance and I'm sure as hell, that most bit coin users don't have multiple wallets to try and hide their true balance...for the regular bit coin user, they most likely keep their funds in one wallet...which would increase the likelihood of things happening similar to the post I quoted.

Even minuscule things like that is why privacy for crypto coins is needed, anyone who can't see that is beyond ignorant and can't be helped, just like those people who were skeptical of bit coin in 2010 and 2011

And one wallet is made up of many addresses...

Is very easy to obfuscate yourself, your dentist isn't going to go into deep blockchain forensics to attempt to work out which addresses are yours.

Not yet, but Bitcoin tracing will become easier and easier.

Also how is it easy to obfuscate yourself?

Eh?

You have all your BTC in one address and thats the one you carry around with you?

That is not what we are saying at all, what we are saying is that it's possible to map the bitcoin blockchain and build up very reasonable assumptions about someone's wealth and their movements.
718  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: July 08, 2014, 12:46:13 PM
this is quite a valueable post - I think what all the guys fearing the actual competition (drk, xc, vrc) need to understand is that this topic is extremely sensitive. besides distribution the competition is oftentimes half-baked, or even closed source regarding anonymisation (!)

guys seriously, who the heck will trust something like that with his most sensitive issue, his privacy?

Hm, I thought it's common knowledge that the majority of "Joes" don't care about their privacy.

I would imagine the set of people into bitcoin would overlap quite a bit with the set of people that care about privacy.

Also remember that privacy becomes more important when it concerns your monetary movements. No one would gladly make their bank account open for the neighbours to check you incomings and outgoings. Also business; I posted this on the nxtforum a while ago before I found the answer (Monero):

We don't have any kind of political pressure or large scale adaption by general public (like for example the Internet itself) that we can stop govts declaring the whole thing illegitimate and criminal.  We should avoid the "marketing" that emphasize "criminals are safe" and "not traceable by NSA"  even though I personally do not have any problem with the idea.

Ok ok fair point.

But Nxt and Bitcoin are far far worse than cash, a bank account, VISA and paypal. If I were to do all my business in CryptoCurrency, my friends and enemies would know how much my bills are, how much I paid for that investment house, how much cash flow I have, where I go to eat out, what time I bought my morning coffee.

For business this is a disaster, I know several business men and even talked with the son of a billionaire, the consensus is that CryptoCurrency is far too transparent and it's suicide to use it.

A business will not operate an account that it's competitors can watch in real time.

It's less about the NSA and more about the world. The world can see everything you do and I know it cannot take off until that is fixed.

Call it privacy instead of anonymity. At the moment privacy in CryptoCurrencies is a complete and utter joke.

719  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][BBR] Boolberry [ANONYMOUS | CRYPTONOTE | ADDR ALIASES | NO IPO/PREMINE] on: July 08, 2014, 12:12:20 PM
I want to announce that I have selected Boolberry to be the cryptonote platform that I will use for NXTprivacy integration. Having analyzed the source code of the various cryptonote coins, it is clear that BBR is far and away the best. Even has cross platform Qt GUI.

My plan is to integrate a "private send" feature into NXTservices GUI that will allow people with NXT to leverage the privacy from BBR. There will also be a NXT internal privateNXT asset and pNXT BBR fork that map 1:1 to avoid having to exchange NXT <-> BBR in thin markets.

I have not worked out all the details, but I am looking forward to bring a lot of value to both the Boolberry and cryptonote communities in general. My investment strategy is to select the strongest tech platform, invest BTC into it and then invest even more time and dev work to make the investment more valuable.

James

Will your system be a service and closed source? Or will the source be open?

If it's open I would like to fork the project so a Monero transaction medium can be used instead of Boolberry.
720  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin will apply for a Guinness record on: July 08, 2014, 08:57:04 AM
The record is for “the world’s largest distributed computing network”?

I wonder if this is really the case? It seems to be the largest network of computers hashing SHA256. that's almost for sure.
