Is it the same SIA which made an asset on NXT AE last summer?

Yes of course. The old thread is for sianote/siafund investors. This is now the main official thread for Siacoin since it is releasing soon.

We are currently urgently looking for a UI/UX person to join full time.

Bumped that for you  ... the wallet UI is so impoverished that it will significantly hinder the launch.

Cheers

Graham

Do you have more specific criticisms? We can't overhaul anything by June 7th but we can make a series of tweaks. Other than the fact that the UI has a fixed height, I feel that our UI is pretty good.

Just to clarify, mining is done through proof of work and no longer through proof of storage where you offer up your storage space?

I'm a little confused. Do you get siacoin by offering storage or not?

You get siacoin by offering storage, because people are paying you for that storage. Proof of storage is used to guarantee that the files are being held as claimed.

Consensus is driven by pow mining however.

We already have Storj. How is Sia different from it?

Sia uses a substantially different technology stack. From what I understand of Storj, storage verification happens through hosts checking on each other. Storj does not have good protection against deduplication, Sybil attacks, and has a novel and not academically verified method of consensus. Sia does use an academically verified method of consensus, has strong deduplication defense, and strong Sybil defense.

Storj has been changing rapidly, some of my criticisms may no longer apply.

Is it the same SIA which made an asset on NXT AE last summer?

As grandpa_seth has confirmed, yes, this is the same Sia.

Do you have more specific criticisms?

The mining section provides the user with no information whatsoever about progress. So the user is mining, but what's their relative power? Do they need to devote more cores? Threads? How long should they expect to wait before gaining coins?

I waited a while and then realised I could be waiting forever, so I closed the wallet.

Spreadcoin's mining tab addresses these issues.

I found the app a little too laconic and uncommunicative generally but you're looking for specialist help, so I thought there's little point alerting you to issues that you're almost certainly already aware of. Hence my confirming the severity from the user's perspective.

Thanks for your feedback. I agree with your criticisms of the Mining page. The reason it's a bit lacking is that we have been debating whether normal users should be using the miner at all. Since serious miners will be a minority of users (hopefully...), it might make more sense to create a separate, more informative interface just for them. I'll check out Spreadcoin's interface to get a sense of what you're looking for.

We are refining our mining API right now, with the goal of supporting "drop-in" third-party miners like Bitcoin does. Once the mining API is stable, we can improve the Mining page quite a bit (adding hash rate, performance graphs, etc.). But in general, our mining situation is pretty nascent; it essentially forces everyone to do CPU mining.

Unfortunately, there's not a quick fix for that on our end. Everything should work if you extract at the top level.

It will take time, but we will be releasing a new UI that addresses all of these problems. I think we can have something by August. Sorry that the timeline cannot be shorter. We will fix what we can in the meantime.

place the archive at root ( c:\ ) and extract from there ... windows has a limitation of 255 characters and wont extract anything further than that ...

ours extracts without issue from root ...

but - due to issues with windows vista - it wont run ... the package is incompatible ...

thank God we normally use linux - which will be tested next week ... Wink ...

Sure, np, I'm comfortable mining from the CPU, I do it all the time.

So, out of curiosity ... as new adopter, how long does it typically take to mine a block and gain some coins in order to pay the tolls that otherwise bar the way to experiencing/exploring the functionality?

Cheers

Ok , thanks for the OSX fix.. mine is up and running now.

I sent my sianotes to NXT-K5ZJ-NNR2-4J4B-D92UF tx 16463177275275997679 with my generated address

I have got the new Sia client running, I go to wallet, and I see "create address" but I do not see any way to import my generated address. Is this due to beta? how about some more details, per screen.

thanks

I'm a little confused. Do you get siacoin by offering storage or not?

You can get siacoin in two ways: mining, and by offering storage. Newly minted coins only go to miners, those offering storage get coins from users who are paying to use the storage.

So yes, you get siacoin by offering storage. It's just not newly minted siacoin.

So, out of curiosity ... as new adopter, how long does it typically take to mine a block and gain some coins in order to pay the tolls that otherwise bar the way to experiencing/exploring the functionality?

I am not sure. Right now, it seems like you'd be able to mine a block every 60 minutes or so. At launch there will probably be a lot more people mining, so an i7 might be able to mine a block every few hours or so. p2pool is supported by Sia,once we implement that we can substantially reduce the variance on mining.

As far as I know, there is no GPU implementation for the blake2b algorithm. Someone is going to have to write that. One of us might do it, though if we get a ton of people mining the coin I think it would be better for us to implement p2pool. p2pool is better than traditional mining pools for a lot of reasons, and I'd rather have p2pool ready as soon as people start wanting mining pools so that we don't end up with Ghash.io style problems on Sia. We have someone who will be focusing entirely on the miner starting June 1st. That's not enough time to have stuff out by the launch date, but hopefully we'll have some good mining stuff ready by mid July.

I'm not sure what you mean by md5 of the wallet files?

The link is http://www.siacoin.com/sianotes.html. Thanks for pointing that out, I've changed the OP to have the correct link.

There is not currently any way to import your generated address or otherwise use siafunds. That will change by June 7th. We currently intend on keeping siafunds separate from siacoins, including the addresses. We're still trying to figure out what will be intuitive for the user but also secure.

I realy like the idea since it is similliar to storjs which i think has huge upside potential however I am not sure if it will be profitable to rent miners at the start due to the high inflation.

The addresses that you generated with 'siag' are the addresses you will use on the full network.

All addresses on the testnet will be valid on the full network, though address reuse is generally not a good idea.
