Because they will need to bring at least one centre-forward to the team in this case. Even one might not be enough in the long run thinking of injury or suspension cases as well. It is never a good idea to compare players with each other when they are totally different types of players and even in general you have to look at the age individually. Players with outstanding performances at age 37 are, well you can guess it, outstanding. Modric, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic, all those players have had different physical conditions than some players who retire at the age of 33. I doubt that Lukaku will still be a top scorer in European leagues in 7 years from now. I can't be sure, but I doubt it. For now extending the contract makes sense.

Don't say a player is not looking at the money or must play in Europe, it's all about your choice, and mind you, some people choose poorly whether you like it or not, but it's their choice. And this still doesn't mean he would not get the offer next year as he only extended his contract by a year with Real Madrid, why not more if he so sees this the way you narrated?
