OTC thread is open here until good exchanges are available: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1372878.0I'm facilitating a trade or two per day and and I'm pretty sure there are more that happen direct between buyers and sellers

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.

wow that was funny: I didn't get a single block since yesterday, a couple minutes ago I compiled it again with the little git commits of tonight, run it and it found a block right away! :-)
on a side note (but may be related), just by looking at the log (I didn't look at the code yet), it looks like when a new block is received, it doesn't reset the miner threads (to work on the new block).
EDIT: I forgot to mention that yesterday I run the daemon with 8GB and 1 thread per GB, today I run it with default settings instead, which looks to result in 1GB usage and 8 threads on it. Which in turn results to much shorter thread run time: could explain why I didn't get any block yesterday (the long threads always ended up being obsoleted by a new block).

You're right - the wallet miner is not much more than a reference implementation and has both the shortcomings that you mention. I think it is going to be eclipsed soon with much more efficient miners, so probably not worth putting a lot of effort into polishing it, but it is good advice to run a lot of threads on a smaller amount of memory to reduce possibilities of orphans.

Trying to mine under Ubuntu 14 and getting error:
"There is no RPC client functionality in bitcoind anymore. Use the hodlcoin-cli utility instead."
Huh? It worked an hour ago, I rebuilt from source again and now this. Did something change?
And if so, how do I use hodlcoin-cli?
Edit: False alarm. I forgot the dash in front of "-genproclimit=8" in the command to start hodlcoind.
Sure was a weird error for that mistake though.
