I see no real benefit in a standalone miner without a pool. But a pool means botnets means hashrate skyrocketing.
Also I don't see any easy optimisation to get better hashrate, even with a custom miner.

There are no easy optimizations, sure, but when YVG released a CPU miner for Memorycoin (very similar algorithm), it was 2X or 3X more efficient, and was equal to GPU miners. YVG is a real giant of CPU optimizations and I think I can hear YVG yawning and stretching and wiping the sleep out of his eyes . . . .

Was that YAM closed miner? Or was it opensource? If open, I will have a look. And, I promise I will publish my findings :-)

I didn't dig too deep myself when trying to find the edits that YAM miner went through for MMC, but I could only find pre-compiled windows exe's. I also think that it was strictly based on getwork and not compatible with GBT.

We're seeing a lot of HODL being burnt up at an address here -

http://www.presstab.pw/phpexplorer/HODL/address.php?address=3QJmnh

We're calling these roasted nuts. (The nut being the smallest unit of HODL, like the satoshi)

Looks like someone is mining to an invalid address . . . maybe not setting miningaddress properly, or miningaddress="".

There's over 6000 HODL roasted on the open blockchain so far, that's nearly 1% of current supply. So if you're mining to a single address, I want to remind you to take a moment to quietly check your nuts, and readjust them if anything is out of place.

Here is what we think is going on

Please note

Any one using a hodlcoin.conf file omit the "" from the address

Code:
rpcuser=...........
rpcpassword=........
daemon=1
server=1
p2pport=1989
rpcport=11989
gen=1
minermemory=4
genproclimit=6
miningaddress=address (without "")

Ppl are still burning their NUTS!!

I wonder where HODL will be a year from now on.
Hopefuly FreeTrade maintains the project, if there's an incentive to buy, that would be now, since HODL is cheap.
You never know if you'll profit, but its fun, HODL is here to stay.

Yup, the protocol is fixed and low-maintenance. I've seen a lot of projects that keep adding features to chase new users, but actually I think it's important to keep the project consistent, reliable and understandable. HOdlcoin is a simple proposition and elegantly implemented. It's Bitcoin with interest and bonus interest for early adopters and HOdlers.

Anyone who can understand Bitcoin can understand HOdlcoin.

Something I saw from previous projects is that users really like to see their HOdlings grow. Something very satisfying about that, so HOdlcoin is really designed with this user feedback in mind. It's a slow burner, so it won't suddenly show up on CMC at 10mil, but as we see addition of exchanges, services, pools, miners, stats and time . . we will see a gradual rise in supply and market cap.

Is it possible for you to port over the lottery function from your previous projects?
It would be a nice extra addition for HODL and cant hurt

Are there any mining tutorials for someone on Ubuntu? I've never had any experience with it and can't go back to Windows.. Would be really nice to try and mine this coin seeing as it has a very interesting concept.
I'd be very grateful if someone could help me understand how to mine on my old PC Smiley

Linux/Ubuntu 14.04 build guide

Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install checkinstall subversion git git-core build-essential
sudo apt-get install libssl-dev libminiupnpc-dev
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bitcoin/bitcoin
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libdb4.8-dev libdb4.8++-dev
sudo apt-get install build-essential libboost-all-dev automake libtool autoconf
sudo apt-get install pkg-config
sudo apt-get install git
git clone https://github.com/FreeTrade/HOdlcoin
cd HOdlcoin
./autogen.sh && ./configure --without-gui
make
sudo make install
mkdir -p ~/.hodlcoin/
echo -e "rpcuser=rpc\nrpcpassword=1234\nserver=1\ndaemon=1\ntxindex=1" > ~/.hodlcoin/hodlcoin.conf

This will start the wallet mining

Code:
hodlcoind -gen=1 -minermemory=1 -genproclimit=8 -miningaddress="address"

minermemory= the amount of Ram in 1gb increments (1,2,3)

genproclimit=   the number of threads per 1gb of ram from "minermemory" (this number must be a power of 2 so 2,4,8,16,)

miningaddress="address" this is the address all your mined blocks will be sent to (example "HodlDsNuts57MFNiN8CMrMjC2CYAy8pwi9")

This will shut down the wallet

Code:
