Well, I've been mining some time now (max. hash rate: around 1,3 Ghash),
tried solo with no luck, so quickly went to pool mining!

Enjoying it ever since... creating & playing with Bitcoins is soooo much fun

WOW...where to begin? BitCoins are awesome and I wish I discovered them sooner! I am a college student currently living in a dorm (free electricity...woots!) so btc mining is just amazing as I repair/collect PC parts all the time. I have my main desktop and laptop chugging out what they can and another desktop and laptop doing some scrypt CPU mining as they haz no mineable GPUs. I have had a ton of fun and learned quite a bit about quite a lot honestly...HAH. I've even managed to overclock my GPU for gaming purposes as well...knowledge I have passed on to a few friends...a few of which I have also turned on to mining

I have slowly moved from solo mining (everybody else tried it at first too...just admit it ) to Eligius to Deepbit to Bitparking where I was introduced to Namecoins after which I moved to Triplemining ( http://gektek.triplemining.com ...shameless plug sry) which has done me RATHER well. I am currently dabbling with P2Pool mining as I am hoping to soon be able to make a small investment in an ASIC (recommendations? I know of Butterfly Labs, BTCFPGA, ZTEX, and FPGA Mining...of which Butterfly seems to be the best bet as while BTCFPGA has a nice inexpensive starter option I might as well buy a 5770 on eBay for $200 less and ZTEX has no option with heatsink or fan (is it really that hard folks?) and I LOVE FPGA Mining (I buy PCI extenders from their http://cablesaurus.com/ site) but if I'm already spending $600(ish) I might as well buy from Butterfly and get twice the hash rate). So ANYWAY...hi...I'm fun...I'm new...even if I don't make a fortune I'm having a BLAST learning so please PM me or reply or whatever...I wanna learn yo!

from BTCFPGA site looks like their product is $1,000 for 800mhash whereas the product from BFL is only $600 for 800mhash (maybe longer wait time though)

Ya...the inexpensive BTCFPGA option I was talking is paying $200 for the 'board' and then just buy 1 'plugin' card for $250 which would give you 210 Mh/s for $450 but I can get an ATI 5770 on eBay which does about 200 Mh/s for only $200 to $250. But ya...my basic point is...for anything over $500 is there a better option that a 'Single' from Butterfly labs and for anything under $500 is there a better option than a 5770 for $250? Yes I know the 5870 has a higher hash rate but the price for those is getting awful close to that $500 buffer at which point why not put the extra bucks down for a BFL Single ya know with its 800 Mh/s ya know?

you can get used 5870's for $200 on eBay
5970 for $340 (700mhash)
5830 for $90-$100 (I think 280 mhash)

I dunno if the 'very' was necessary but after searching again I see prices have gone down a smidge since I searched last. Plus I'll admit that I got frustrated searching for 5870s and kinda gave up. My efforts have been renewed...ty ty!

I'm SOO glad to hear there there ARE (still) other options available besides ASICs that people seem to be going gah gah over lately and other than BFLs 'rumored' new chips I haven't really seen the real advantages unless you can afford well...a butt load of em...

oh yeah. GPU's are still the most affordable available right now. ASiC's are in infancy. FPGA's are only a good option if you have high power costs.

I thought prices were going up recently, shortly before i bought 5970's they were about $300/each, then bitcoin price steadily going up, i saw them rise to $320 or so when i bought and now i think $340 I'm guessing

other ones i dont know, probably less inflation because 5970's are the hot sell for bitcoin mining. maybe people that sold them off when bitcoin was $2 or $3 bought some back when bitcoin is $8 and $9

HAHA...I wasn't really worried about the 'very'...just wanted to point it out cuz this IS the newbies area ya? (Sorry...been a forum moderator in the past and sometimes my bumhole tendencies show...oops ...ya know...keepin people in check subtle style HAHA)

No but really, I talk big but I've really only discovered BitCoins within the last 2 months or so. In my searching, mostly because it is a 'hot topic' right now, I kept seeing ASICs as 'omg amazing' and what you 'need now' or get buried by the competition...yadda yadda. As such I had kinda swept GPUs under the rug as not worth the cost but you have shown me the error of my ways

Hey all been lurking these forums for about a year or so, decided I'd finally register. Lately I've been trying to figure out how feasible it would be to accept bitcoins as payment in addition to paypal for a new business I will be starting in the next month. With the huge variance in the price of BTC is there a way to tie a price to dollars pinged to the exchange rate? Also how long would it take me to convert from bitcoin to $ (say with paypal). The reason I ask is because my margins are going to be pretty low, and as of now my costs will be fixed, so if I receive payment in bitcoins and it takes me a day or two to sell them and assuming the value of bitcoin has dropped then I would be losing money. I think bitcoin is a great new technology and I look forward to being a member of this community.

I'm Gerco, I've been lurking on these forums for a year or so now and got involved in Bitcoin just before the $30 point (and subsequent crash). I trade mostly on GLBSE while I'm looking for some venture to earn bitcoins with in earnest. I believe in Bitcoin and am looking forward to the days that I can pay my rent in BTC.

The US banking system is so old fashioned, expensive and slow that I find it almost impossible for something that is better in almost every way to fail
