Even in a Crypto Winter, Venture Capitalists Are Thriving

While ICO funding has almost trickled to zero and some seem to be cautiously stepping away from the industry during this persistent bear market, venture capitalists (VCs) are taking their place, making the most of the opportunity to invest in promising blockchain projects before the fold. We may be facing the prospect of a crypto winter, but it’s a renaissance moment for VCs in blockchain.

Interesting discussion around Proof of Stake.  Proof of Stake has no way to hard fork, accordingly issues must be resolved by “community consensus”.

https://twitter.com/laurentmt/status/1077635243845259265

TBH though, it's moot. I don't think anyone cares anymore after what happened in the Bitcoin community. Satoshi envisioned that the fork chain with the shortest PoW record would get "attacked and killed off" by the miners. Never fkn happened. In fact, they kept all forks alive because "reasons", selfish fucking reasons.

So it's a non-argument that has lost its meaning.

Sideways sideways, slowly going up is fine with me honestly.

Bitmain as high as 85% layoffs. Thus prepare for the dump of BCH!

Thus the effect on BTC and other cryptos will be down (at least for a bit) on this coming dump, IMHO. (hope to be wrong)

ah...Bitmain...true evil...when it dumps the remaining BCH and spooks the BTC and other crypto markets again...

I will HOPE it is just sideways in BTC price in the near future as a result

Bitmain: evil never rests...finally may be vanquished!

Surely.

There is nothing better at the moment, apart from Bakkt ETF.

But I like this:

"While many believe that the only way to achieve this is the value of investment in the institutional market, others, such as Stephen Pair, CEO of Bitpay, believe that a more user-oriented approach to the adoption of bitcoins can achieve the same objective."

The two forms are good, one situation attracts the other, that is the correct thing, to advance in the adoption.

Indeed. I think we'll see the real deal when Joe Average is able to use his coin on Amazon and such.

Abstract

The control of product distribution in a multistep catalytic selective hydrogenation reaction is challenging. For instance, the deep hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate (DMO) is inclined to proceed over Cu/SiO2 catalysts because of inevitable coexistence of Cu+ and Cu0, leading to hard acquisition of the preliminary hydrogenation product, methyl glycolate (MG). Here, the oriented DMO hydrogenation into MG is achieved over the sputtering (SP) Cu/SiO2 catalysts with a selectivity of more than 87% via freezing Cu in a zero-valence state. Our density functional theory calculation results revealed that Cu0 is the active site of the preliminary hydrogenation step, selectively converting DMO to MG via •H addition, while Cu+ is a key factor for deep hydrogenation. The prominent Coster-Kronig transition enhancement is observed over SP-Cu/SiO2 from Auger spectra, indicating that the electron density of inner shells in Cu atoms is enhanced by high-energy argon plasma bombardment during the SP process. Thus, the “penetration effect” of outermost electrons could also be enhanced, making these Cu nanoparticles exhibit high oxidation resistance ability and present noble metal–like behaviors as Au or Ag. Therefore, the regulation of Cu chemical properties by changing the electron structure is a feasible strategy to control the hydrogenation products, inspiring the rational design of selective hydrogenation catalysts.

tl;dr  While not exactly transmutation of copper to gold it is pretty damn close and might have a profound impact on industrial usage down the road.

Interestingly enough from what I read, silver seems to be relatively inert to this process for now. This is not making gold bars out of thin air..this is something that might be useful in certain chemical processes found in heavy industry. Thereby lower production costs hopefully. Something to keep an eye on in the long term I suppose.

Physics is why I'm staying the fuck out of "precious metals", period. Anything that can be physically produced has a high chance of seeing its production cost dwindle down this century. Too much crap going on that is directly and indirectly going to drive synthesis costs down.

I think some people are just waiting to see what the market is going to do before buying.  They will eventually decide it is not going down any more and then jump in and another rally will begin.  Or someone will dump and they will jump in and then keep the price at about the level it is at now.  I think the fact that we have seen a few dumps already without affecting the price too drastically is really bullish and shows there is some great support
