In the context, I was pointing out that on an individual level, I am much less vulnerable to any sort of government action than >99% of people here.  Not invincible—nobody is!—but much less vulnerable.

Although I have never specifically concealed my Bitcoinism, my general privacy practices are so tight that there is no record anywhere that I even know what Bitcoin is.  Thus if, hypothetically, my local government were to ban Bitcoin tomorrow with a penalty of 10 years in prison for HODLing BTC, then I could afford to ignore that if I so choose.

How many people here can say that without being fantastically foolish?  A few, but certainly less than 1%.

How many of the types who brag that “governments can’t stop Bitcoin” can say that?  Probably none:  Fools usually have poor opsec.

How many have never done KYC on a cryptocurrency exchange?

Never done a Google search on Bitcoin-related terms that could be traced to them?  Never discussed Bitcoin on social media accounts that could be traced to them?  Never even browsed a Bitcoin-related webpage (or for many years, any webpage) without strong privacy protections?

I emphasize again that I am not invulnerable.  Nobody is.  But I am much, much less vulnerable than >99% of WO hatters.

I care so much about what governments do to Bitcoin, because I care about Bitcoin.

If you are doing exactly this you are creating a reason for your government to search you out.

But I will tell you I live in NJ I visit NY a lot very late at night. I wear a bulletproof vest for safety and I am now committing a crime if I do wear the vest. No gun no weapon just a vest. I have to decide if I will wear the vest next time I go late at night or comply with this new "gun safety law" So I do hear you about f'd up laws and resisting them.

If the ban were global (or even just covered the strategically most powerful jurisdictions), the rest of us could then have fun anonymously trading encrypted virtual pizza NFTs for bitcoins—since the market as we now know it would cease to exist.

I urge people to stop blowing off the threats of anything from regulatory attacks on use and trading of Bitcoin, to restrictions on mining, to (less likely, but still possible) widespread bans.

for anyone of us in the USA (you know, land of the "free") a government ban would certainly stop almost all of us in their tracks. even if youre not kyc'd anywhere, use tor, decentralized exchanges etc i would wager they would find out anyway. maybe if you live totally off the grid and never go near civilization it could be done but thats not for me. call me a wimp or whatever, i need modern society to live comfortably. especially modern medicine.

understand: i HATE kyc and the government snooping in our business to the point they just hoover all info they can to store and analyze  for "security/terrorism/etc" purposes even when its not currently useful. as they can always make some law in the future and look back at all that collected data to retroactively get you on some law that doesnt even exist right now. 

look, i will mess with a lot of things but one entity i wont mess with is the irs. they have NO sense of humor. makes me glad i did not hide my btc gains even before the irs targeted it. call me a wimp but thats what we here in the USA need to do to exist in peace.

Regulatory attacks are another potential threat—a big one.  This post is already too long; and I need to analyze the Lummis bill carefully, before applauding her too much.  Let’s just say, on a general note, I am concerned about the potential that legislation may draw Bitcoin into a regulatory quagmire, while tossing Bitcoiners a bone with some obvious things such as exempting small purchases from capital gains tax.

I agree with the general sentiment of your above abridged tome, and will also be looking more carefully at the bill to the extent I can.

But maybe I am too easy to please, but I think the exemption for small purchases to be taxable is a very powerful little stinger when it comes to what this bill could mean.  The ability to begin moving Bitcoin around for commerce without the tax encumbrance is an important  change.

Think of it this way...  You are an early bitcoinner in the US.  You can now spend and replace your bitcoin for groceries and reduce your cap gains to zero at the time of purchase $200 at a time.

We need to catch up with Africa, after all.

In the USA you could mine to an address and never touch it.

I kyc everything fully transparent and I now did an LLC with buysolar. I had a schedule c but turning 65 and wanting to still work my accountant advised using an account with the business name on it for bitcointalk.

 Thus the new account vs philipma1957.  Thinking BTC is truly private and stealthy holds back its adoption as that is my opinion.
