The PCB mod (SSOP version) is completed.
I'll upload modified BOM and Kicad files to the Github (probably tomorrow, I want to check it one more time, it's late here and BOM isn't ready).
As of now, the mod is UNTESTED! I've ordered all the components needed (from Mouser), but I'm now looking for some cheap PCB fab. Here, one 4 layer PCB costs about 120€ with shipping, which I'm not willing to pay (I can't afford it to be honest). So if anyone knows some cheap PCB fab in EU, let me know. Otherwise, I'll have to order it from US.
And the mod is still using IR3895, so the board will be probably about 4 times faster than the original one.
Sweet :-) your hard work is appreciated will check it out when you its it on Github

Can i help u out with the pcb ordering/paying and you send me the components from mouser or something in that aria

If we can make some kind of a deal pm me

Guys, sorry for the delay.
The design is at https://github.com/zipiju/klondike/tree/master/kicad/k16s-55. There are also exported gerbers.
The BOM isn't ready yet. I haven't had time to do it. I'll try to do it today (tonight).

Basically, only two three componenents are changed:
- for each board you will need two of this LDO's for PLL voltage: NCP694D10HT1G
- and one 25MHz oscillator: ASDMB-25.000MHZ-LC-T (this has the same footprint as the old one)

There are also two resistors changed for Core regulator (basically they are just swapped - 4.02K for 2.87k and 2.87k for 4.02k, so no need to order new).
Also, I recommend to use 2A 3.3V reg., as stated at projectklondike.org in optional changes.
And in the schematics, it's possible, that the oscillator value is still 32MHz, so ignore that for now. I'll change that later too.

Be sure to check out http://projectklondike.org/ site

This is the change for the 55nm Avalon chips right?
How many parts got changed ?

Yes.
Basically just three. Five when I count swapping the resistors.

I have a GREAT idea on how to handle this.  How about you post a payment address and eight folks step up to send you the BTC equiv of 120€/8 (i.e. btc equiv of 15€).  Since WAY more than 8 folks are gonna benefit from your work it seems that slicing 120 by 8 makes a small amount for us to pay in order to directly participate in / support your efforts.  Count me in as one of the 8 who pays by the way.  Also, when one pays their 1/8 amount they should post the transaction info in this thread so you can see when all 8 have paid and so that only the proper amount gets transferred your way.

I like that idea, count me in if Zipiju agrees.

I've got a K16 sitting here hashing now, and I'd love to add some Avalon2 versions alongside it!

Zipiju,

To participate in the funding of the prototype K16s-55 PCBs I have sent you .02BTC (slightly more than 1/8 of the PCB cost) per ->

Status: 0/unconfirmed, broadcast through 1 node
Date: 12/3/2013 19:58
To: My part of PCB funding for Zipiju 1CKscJAxjdhbJjJPJ9AzL2dWTmB6oc49UE
Debit: -0.02 BTC
Transaction fee: -0.0001 BTC

Guys, if you want to pay for the PCB, I'm ok with that.
Other components are on the way (should be here next week). I do have couple of 55nm Avalon samples in hand and I'll use the same stencil as for the first design, so the PCB is the only thing left to order.
Couple of options here:

I can order single PCB locally for 115.90€ exactly, delivered within 5 days,

or I can order about 10 PCB's for about the same amount from China (one PCB costs 9.90$ there, they can be bought in batches of 10, so 99$ total). The only issue here could be the delivery date, since stuff from China usually takes up to three weeks to arrive here. I'll try to contact guys from the company and ask them about delivery dates.

So if you're willing to wait a little bit longer, I would be able to send everyone, who would participate, one PCB (since I'll be needing only one, two if I mess something up).
So let me know what do you think.

This is a bit off topic from where this thread is going, but I need a little help if anyone can provide it. I have 2 k16s, fully assembled and visually everything checks out, but neither one is recognized when the USB is plugged in. No blinking LEDs, just buzzing caps.
If anyone would mind helping me out, I'd have no problem tipping what I can or test these via your pool/address of choice.

As far as the avalon 2 development is going, I wouldn't mind helping out with that PCB either.

it sounds like you might have a short somewhere in the power supply output. Did you measure voltages with a multimeter? Do you have an oscilloscope?

I tried 2 different power supplies, one that I set up just for the k16s, and the other supplying my BE blades. Both are putting out a solid 12v. As for probing the board itself, I'm not sure where on the board is good to test with. Unfortunately, I do not have an o-scope. I've always heard that buzzing caps were normal, although they may have been shorted now that I think about it. It's possible that my heatsink shorted the PCI-e power pins. I noticed there wasn't enough of a gap to feel comfortable with, after I tested them. You think it might just be the caps?

Edit: Also, do we have an IRC channel?
