I remember a 1 second block that had 8 shares on slush's pool. I was happy to be one of those 8 shares.

Did you go to the casino that day? Wink

Heh, no. I have to drive for a few hours to find a casino, and I only like to gamble when it comes to Bitcoins.

Who needs to drive ? Check out the Marketplace, or wiki https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Category:Gambling

it's got casino, poker site, blackjack, lotto ... any number of ways to lose your hard earned BTC .... hehehe ... i'm awful i shouldn't be encouraging you ... life's a gamble.

Not sure how much lucky you really are Smiley - this block is invalid Sad. Hash has been found faster than bitcoind distributed information about new bitcoin block on p2p network.

darn it, only been mining since Sunday on my 5850 (on Slush's pool) and found my first block this morning.. And got one of the lowest payouts I've ever gotten on the pool hehe 0.028 BTC!

Oh well, I'm sure it evens out, but it would be great to have 50 BTC's right now Smiley

Yeah that's the chance you take when mining in a pool. Mining solo with a low powered card is like playing the lottery. If you get lucky great, but if you don't you could go for a really really long time without finding 50 BTCs. I for one prefer low variance over "striking it lucky" so I'll continue to mine in a pool regardless of how much hashing power I accumulate..well almost regardless cause if I had 100 Ghash or something crazy like that I'd solo mine..but you catch my drift.

Oh definitely, I know it ends up even in the "end". I prefer the lower variance for sure, and hindsight is always 20/20! I had no way of knowing if I'd hit a block in 5 days as I did, or 25.. So it was definitely worth having the steady flow coming in to know everything's working nicely.

Take solace in the fact that if you were solo mining you almost certainly would NOT have solved that block since you would have been working on [all of] it in differently.

The odds of finding a block solo and finding a block in a pool are exactly the same.

Yes, of course they are and the odds at this person's hash rate is very very small.  The implication of the original message was slanted towards "if I had only waited another couple of days, I probably would have found a block while sole mining".  I was just trying add comfort to the fact that for that particular block, the odds would have remained small had he continued solo mining and thus, the .02BTC or whatever it was is probably more than he would have gotten for that particular block had he worked on it solo.

I had earned a total of 46 BTC when I found my first block. In the long run, yes, it all evens out. Smiley

With difficulty rapidly on the increase, does it really for small time miners?   I think that is why the pools are so alluring.
