This kind of problem may have multiple causes but the most frequent one in practice is that zend fails to start properly. The latter is in turn most commonly caused by block-chain corruption. This could occur in rare cases when for instance machines are stopped due to power disruptions, while zend is writing data.
The reason is usually that zend has not started properly and the GUI wallet cannot connect to it. As a start one may examine the zend logs to find the technical details of the problem. One way to fix this problem, that works in 90%+ of cases is to start zend manually with a -reindex option from a terminal and start the GUI wallet only after that.

I am starting to think that this project will not fork to dump ASICs power.... pity......

What if in an alternative universe some big ASIC company offered a few machines to the developers of a coin?
I alwasy heard that money buys everything....
Will developers accept asics anf forget the fork...
this is just a though to an alternative universe, not this universe....

I thought the forking is on the agenda?

I had same error before.(or it happens every time I open "ZENCashDesktopGUIWallet" first.) Opening "zend" in "app" folder first, and then opening "ZENCashDesktopGUIWallet" worked fine with me.

When the algorithm changed implemented in ZenCash network, I believe it can have big impacts (positive ones) on the community.
It's always good to become ASIC-resistant, because coins with ASIC-resistant characteristics can have stronger ability to deal with dominant hashrates, which in turn prevent potential attacks.

so, you have decided to fork the classic equihash algo ? this is big. i have to admit i agree to this measure, but if the coin is really profitable someone will still make an asic for it.
