I mean given that BFL is now actually shipping, you can get a jalapeno for $275 at 5gh/s

Where? I want one.....

Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.

I don't understand, why take the time and effort to create an FPGA miner when everyone is already moving into ASIC?  I mean given that BFL is now actually shipping, you can get a jalapeno for $275 at 5gh/s vs a mars unit from kncminer for $2800 at 6gh/s.  That's a huge price difference.

With Avalon, ASICMiner, and BFL units shipping and the difficulty skyrocketing, it's possible that if you buy a mars unit from kncminer you may never pay it off and break even, let alone make any profit.

There must be something I'm missing or not understanding, so please forgive my ignorance.  Don't take this as an attack on kncminer - they claim to be working on ASICs as well as releasing this FPGA unit, but I'm just curious as why they aren't focusing 100% on ASICs.

I think the reason why they are producing an ASIC design first is because they are using the OpenCores route to ASIC development. Once they have the software running on the FPGA, they can make identical (except faster) ASICs.

Bingo! Well done that man for paying attention!! Cool

Funny, because KnCminer hasn't shipped a single unit, yet BFL has shipped many.  Hell, as far as I'm aware, KnC miner doesn't have a fully working prototype yet (if they do, please post link to pics).  It may be months before you get a Mars unit, hell, they don't even have a date set for the Mars release yet.

At this point, the time it takes to get a Jalapeno might as well be equal to the time it will take to get a Mars unit.  Both are uncertain, "sometime in the future" vague dates.

doing some quick napkin math if you grab a mars/jupiter you pay about $21 per Gh compared to those USBees which is around $800 per Gh

not factoring power costs.. do we have power specs on the Jupiter?

6GH/s+, says so on their website

It also states; 30% Improvement in hashing rate over standard Implementation.

I had emailed before enquiring whether that means 9gh/s and they said not likely, but there should be some performance improvement. So I'm keen to see what the actual figures are. Fingers crossed and all that...

Not strange they told you not likely cause 30% would build it up to 7.8GH, 9 would be 50% Smiley

INB4-2ndPAGE.
I am curious...why do your ASIC chips say alterra and not KNCMINER?

I know for a fact that Alterra uses TSMC to build its ASIC chips.

Avalon uses TSMC to build its ASIC chips as well, yet Avalon gets its name on TSMC chips.

In either case, why not go right to TSMC?

That's a FPGA, those are not ASIC.

Come on guys, at least read the friggin' OP.

From their last post, they're working on optimisation of the rig and filming the proof ref. hashrate, then will give a 5 day warning for travel arrangements to be made for those that wish to attend.

As long as this doesn't delay the anticipated manufacture and delivery times, then any delay in meeting is purely a formality.

How does ordering work?

You click preorder on their website and it sends you an email

surely this is not the queue.

It seems it works like that the id you get by email is your place in the queue.

It's just a matter of trust. They don't want to ask you money until there's proof of a working prototype. They want to differentiate themselves from BFL I suppose. It seems weird and required a bit of trust also on buyers part

a couple of weeks after the showing of the mars prototype, September is for Jupiter and Saturn. Now the time is for Mars.

If I am not mistaken, it is only for Jupiter  Smiley
