I did that and I received a webpage with details (even for all the transactions after the day mentioned), Bitcoin app keeps saying that it is catching up. I tried getting a new address and updating it on the account as well about 5 days ago. I had transactions on the web and they still are not showing in the Bitcoin app.
Ok, do you see the number of connections in your bitcoin client ? Should be more than 0 if shown.

If you don't know how to rescan your wallet and you are sure that this is your address, you can back up your wallet.dat, delete everything in that folder (bitcoin's data and DB folder) except your wallet.dat and launch the client again, so it will only have the wallet.dat there.

amount of connections varies -I get 12 connections as of right now, synchro wheel keeps rotating and saying that it's "catching up", 189160 blocks downloaded of transaction history. Last received block was generated 31 days ago.
There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.
Advertised sites are not endorsed by the Bitcoin Forum. They may be unsafe, untrustworthy, or illegal in your jurisdiction.

If the blocks number keeps increasing then you just have to wait until it caches up.

You can also archive all those files and folders except your wallet.dat and send this archive to sipa (bitcoin developer) so he can check this and see what caused your client to stop downloading blocks.

Click on the worker name in that table.

I can do that if I make a worker, but my "main" worker has no "name" so I can't click on it.

Disable "advanced workers table" in your settings, then you'll have something to click.
You can give it a tail.

So I waited for a little bit - number doesn't change, stays at the same value.
To my wonder (and maybe yours as well) my wallet.dat disappeared from a "Bitcoin" folder. Ones I could find there are wallet.h and wallet.cpp. I happened to have a backup of it in another folder (archived). What advice would you give me now?

Thanks in advance

What is exact path to this folder ? I don't think that any source files belong there.

Yes, but actual database and wallet are stored somewhere in your profile - https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Data_directory

my bad, it's there
I tried to do a search and it found the file only in my back up folder somehow.

I tried transferring money from that wallet to another one, that was created with different app and it went through without any issues.

EDIT: just checked all the previous transactions on deepbit for status - once I click on the block, it shows my address and says "Not yet redeemed".
Is that bringing any light to the discussion?

This means that those coins aren't yet spent by you.

they are not being shown in my wallet either

but just right now I tried to reinstall bitcoin and clean up all the registry entries about it and reistalled it (with the old wallet) - client started catching up with lost/missing blocks and is half way though the process

if it catches up completely - that would bring a pleasant smile to my face

Hope so.
This was possibly caused by some lockup in your bitcoin client's database. Sadly you didn't saved your debug.log file, that would be interesting to check.
As long as you have your "old" wallet.dat, everything should be fine.

Also there is another option - you can load this wallet.dat, then use your bitcoin client to export a private key for this address (see dumpprivkey), then use blockchain.info or mtgox to sweep funds from all involved unspent transactions and send them somewhere else. (if you trust those sites, of course).
