Looks like new forum members can't post in our "main" thread, so there is a separate thread for questions. New mining pool with fair reward distribution: http://deepbit.net !Service fee is 3%, no block confirmation is needed (your reward won't be recalled if block doesn't gets confirmed). EDIT: Now you can try some new exciting feature - optional Pay-Per-Share mode is enabled in my pool. You can choose payments method for any of your workers, look at your account page for workers configuration. Current rate is 0.00003262705594458 BTC per share. Our advantages- We notify your bitcoin miner about new block with the help of long polling. This allows us minimize the number of stale shares. (You can get up to a several percents higher results)
Protocol description - We pay you for every solved block, even if it later fails to mature (up to 1.2% more)
- You can take your reward at ANY moment, just press "Instant payout" button
- You can choose between two payment modes
- We credit your balance instantly, without 120 blocks delay
- We have open and free registration and do not limit the number of connections or users
If you already know how to use RPC miners, you can register a new account at http://deepbit.net and join the test, using deepbit.net hostname and 8332 port. Your e-mail is your login. You can run separate miners on one account or create additional workers. m0mchil's poclbm is recommended, DiabloMiner, puddinpop and jgarzik miners should work fine too. m0mchil's: poclbm.exe -d0 --host=deepbit.net --port=8332 --user=example@example.com --pass=password(Sometimes -d0 is your CPU and sometmes it's your GPU, you may need to use -d1 with some configurations) DiabloMiner: java -cp target\libs\*;target\DiabloMiner-0.0.1-SNAPSHOT.jar -Djava.library.path=target\libs\natives\windows com.diablominer.DiabloMiner.DiabloMiner -u example@example.com -p password -o deepbit.net -r 8332 -g 5ufasoft's SSE2 CPU miner: bitcoin-miner.exe -a 5 -o http://deepbit.net:8332 -u example@example.com -p password
What is Long Polling ? Explained here.

I can't post in the original thread, so I will ask here: I'm running a CPU miner and a GPU miner in the same PC. CPU miner: 0.9 Mhash jgarzik-cpuminer (it is NOT the ckolivas version) using 1 cpu thread minerd -a sse2_64 -t 1 --url http://pit.deepbit.net:8332/ --user cpuworker --pass workerpass GPU Miner: 4.8Mhash poclbm using the other CPU thread and the GPU python poclbm.py -d 0 --host=pit.deepbit.net --port=8332 --user=gpuworker --pass=workerpass I already created a post about this, but I think I got it wrong. This is the right place to ask. My setup is: AMD64 X2 4400+ EE Geforce 8600GT Ubuntu 11.04 x64 Nvidia CUDA 4.0 The problem is that I'm getting shares in the CPU, one each hour, but I'm not getting shares on the GPU (which is 5 times faster) and it's strange, cause its constantly giving shares to the CPU worker, and the GPU worker hasn't found anything, they have been running for about 16 hours now. I checked in my account, and the cpu worker says 17 shares, but the GPU worker says 0, and they are both running without problems in my PC, no error messages present, they are both showing the hash rate and sometimes the long poll notification.

GeForce 8600 is really really slow for bitcoin mining. What hashrate are you getting with it ? May be it hadn't solved a share yet ? Also you can PM me your login name to check.

yeap. it's slow indeed. I'm getting 4800 khash/s using the geforce 8600GT, and 900 khash/s on the remaining free cpu core (AMD X2 4400 EE). I'm just experimenting with bit coins. Anyway I changed the python miner code to revert the latest git optimization and at least I got 3 shares so far (the counter was stuck at 0 after 16 hours of running). So I guess I'm going to wait to verify if the bug is fixed. My current share count is 22 for the cpu and 3(!!!) for the gpu

I am currently mining at btc guild with 3 gh/s and getting a stale rate of about 2.3%. If I mine with deepbit, will my stale shares be less? Depends on the cause of those stales. You can just try and find out In my experience, absolutely there will be fewer stale shares. At least 50% less if not more. BTC Guild grew very quickly and uses stock, or nearly stock push pool code on each server with some bitcoind modifications of questionable value, and distributes pools around the US and EU and then syncs them up for total pool payout on blocks found. This has resulted in pool servers becoming overloaded, dropping connections (often 10 or 15 seconds) or leaving the miner without a response for new work [long poll or main RPC call] leaving the miner idle. I am not trying to knock BTC Guild [I think they are second only to Deepbit when both are running well], so, once that pool is in good shape again [supposedly the weekend of 7/10], you can do more direct comparisons. Both pools have similar feature sets with BTC Guild taking on a variation on the theme making them different than other pools [just as Deepbit is and was different than other pools when started]. Weigh the options, test a little and decide for yourself . Personally, Deepbit, over the last many weeks has been by far the most stable pool out there [thus, losses due to idles, outright connection loss, and increased stales from other pools tends to offset the premium 3% fee ... and some people have attacked the fee as too high, but with maximum availability as opposed to other pools, features, etc, this is clearly a working model and "supply and demand" has clearly justified the 3% which I pay without regret]. I don't know how deepbit distributes the servers for the pool [there has to be multiple, right Tycho?], but however it is being done, it is by far the most reliable of any large pool out there. Last, it is usually a good thing to have accounts at two or three pools to work with; occasionally every book has gone done and every pool has gone down for a significant period of time [even Deepbit, but always recovered better than before and made up for the one time long outage by a large fee reduction which was not required and simply great customer service]. It is also good to, now and then, test the other pools to see what is working for you at any given time [every five day or whatever, connect to another pool for a statistical sampling to determine what your submission rate is, % stale and of course if there are idles or RPC connection issues, so you know whether to reevaluate your primary pool, or more likely, know which is your best backup option should an outage or unstable situation occur]. If your GPU utilization is cycling (due to receiving no work or outright RPC communication failures), in particular enough to cause the temperature to change by more than a couple of degrees frequently, that is a sure sign to run ... it is very hard on your GPU, especially since it is running 24/7 at 99-100% unlike it would for normal gaming [frequent temperature fluctuations, especially a the higher temps of high utlization causes fatigue wear and tear leading to reduced life, likely significant, of the hardware]. Deepbit leaves me with pretty constant GPU usage, and even with a pool restart of something now and then, one blip is a non-issue. For me, in spite of my ventures elsewhere, Deepbit remains my pool of choice and is BY FAR the most stable in all respects mentioned above. Every attempt to mine elsewhere for backup testing has shown deficiencies in the pool within a couple thousand shares per miner, which is what is required to get a reasonable idea of stale rates anyway. As usual ... I am verbose

Just wanted to say that I've been using Deepbit for a couple of days now and I'm quite pleased. I'm definitely getting more payouts than MtRed and Bitcoin.lc but I'm not sure if it's better than mining.bitcoin.cz. Do you have any statistics for payouts on Deepbit vs. other popular pools? Also, would you recommend PPS or Proportional mining for someone with < 100 Mhash/s? Thanks

Is it worth it for me to start mining with Deepbit if the best videocard in my studio is an old 9800gt, especially given that I can't run it 24/7 since I use it to test our OpenGL projects? Would I be better off just buying the Bitcoins?

Just friendly advise. Do yourself a favor and give up mining with your current hardware; completely. The more important advice follows. Do a LOT of research before you even considering putting one penny into bitcoin. Right now is a rather pivotal time and I would say by far the most dangerous time to considering investing without REALLY UNDERSTANDING WHAT YOU ARE DOING. I mean this in all kindness, but also I need it to be seen publicly for ALL individuals getting into this market without knowledge.

So I might have an answer for you. I've been using a dedicated mining rig with deepbit for a little over a week now. So far it seems totally solid, I can set automatic payouts and such, that's all fine. The machine I'm using is basically my old gaming PC. I's a low end core2 duo, with an nvidia 9600 GT - all and all a pretty lackluster machine. I decided that since It would be my only expenditure, I could pick up a radeon 6950 as a second video card, turning it into a real mining rig. The overclocked radeon puts out 350 Mhash, while the nvidia card sits there doing nothing. I've gotten about 10 Mhash out of the 9600 GT, and about 38 Mhash from the 9800 GTX+. With a 9800 GT, you can expect to be between those, probably about 30 Mhash. All and all, I'm not entirely sure the nvidia cards are worth the electric bill. I actually decided to swap out the 9800 gtx+ card i had in my rig, in favor of the 9600 gt just because of power consumption. Also, this way I could have the radeon dedicated solely to bitcoin, with 9600gt handling actual video needs (now it's a bitcoin rig & media-center PC). As far as buying goes, watch the market, it seems to be dipping, which is actually a good thing if you want to buy. The technology is proven, it works. just wait, that price will come back up and in the mean time, you can get more coins for your dollar. I think buying is the way to go.

I wouldn't be offering speculative or investing advise beyond cautionary if I were you. To the rest of your response, I think you are better off saving the power and dumping the 9800GT altogether, but that is just my opinion.
