I don't think EOS has that capability simply because to get to what they're proposing they've sacrificed a lot of decentralized consensus for centralised control- in the same way that Ripple is never going to seriously challenge Bitcoin. They'll co-exist for a time and one will be more dominant than the other, but it's not going to be a binary market solution of winner/loser.
Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

Up to this point, I think NEO has evolved to become the best competitor of ETH. Although they are competing in crypto, in my opinion, NEO cannot go beyond ETH. Because they are still within the scope of the platform, and in my opinion, ETH is like its parent of NEO. So no matter what the development of NEO, NEO will stay below ETH.

Other competitors such as NEO, EOS, Waves, and IOST have very promising features and technology too. However, it is up to question whenever they will become successful in the mainstream world or not. AFAIK, EOS and Cardano have better chances of rivaling Ethereum than other platforms due to their dedicated development teams and strong foundation. NEO, on the other hand, is good but backed by China which poses a risk for centralization and manipulation. EOS is partly centralized, although it could change over time as it improves every step of the way.

Bitcoin cash does not have the same amount of hype now days. Monero could be a proper competitor to Ethereum.

The best competitor for ethereum I chose Neo, this coin developed very well, I think in the future it can be a competitor for ethereum, because neo is also now widely known for its privileges

The best competitor could be EOS, NEO or ADA, they three of them look really promising, though they don't look like are worth for short term, but are more for a long term if thats what you prefer.

Which are the best competitors to Ethereum, and why do you think so?

(I know on top of my head that Cardano and IOTA try to challenge Ethereum,
although they still haven't proved much from my understanding?)

Well, if you now look at what other coins the ico is held , then you can now see little of almost all ico take place on Ethereum , so I think there are no competitors!

Besides BTC I don't see any serious competitors for Ethereum. Newcomers like Stellar or EOS might be a challenger, but on the long run I think Ethereum will come out as the winner. Just compare the Ethereum community to other communities. It's so much bigger and much more developers are working on Ethereum than on any other project. Time will tell, but I am pretty confident that Ethereum will have a even bigger market position in a few years.

I think that ETH don't have any competitors at the moment, not during this year at least. There're few blockchains that have good potential like EOS and ICX, but they're still far behind the ethereum. And ethereum also doesn't stand on the same place it's developing and getting stronger.

After the collapse of the capitalization of crypto-currencies, many projects went into the shadows, although in January, when the market was healthy, they were constantly talked about. If we talk about the direct competitors of Ethereum, I think we need to remember NEO. This Chinese project is in many aspects superior to that of Ethereum, and is more accessible to programmers. I am sure that he will remind about himself more than once.

Ethereum can process only 25 tps compared to 2000 tps Tron. In a recent testing platform Zilliga managed to reach a rate of 2828 tps. This means that it will be difficult for the Ethereum to remain the king of smart contracts and ICO. And yet - it is worth recalling that the Stellar platform is now more convenient for launching ICO in comparison with ETH. As will be further - we'll see.

EOS is a very promising coin and is one of the competitors. This is one of the most promising altcoins.

I would have mentioned XRP, but i do not consider it to be a cryptocurrency, because of its centralized system. The best for now should be EOS, but more works are ongoing  on it,most especially on its scalability.

EOS really has a lot of potential, but I think it will be very difficult for him to get around ETH, because it does not stand still and develops. Over time, everything will be clear.
