I never know what those people mean when they say they're going to use 'blockchain technology' to do XY and Z. What blockchain ? They're going to launch their own proprietary one ? Do they realise a blockchain cannot exist as a proprietary entity ?

It's like saying we're going to use "atmospheric technology" but we're going to develop our own atmosphere. Do they even realise what they're talking about ? Do they realise it isn't possible for anyone to 'own' a blockchain ?

Maybe the whole idea's just a square peg in a round hole for many corporate types. I can imagine them not being able to imagine an asset that isn't buyable or ownable. Reminds me of a poignant John Lennon lyric - "trying to shovel smoke with a pitchfork in the wind".

Voting power
Helping the network get stronger

Best to use a vps, VULTR will cost you 5 USD per month with good specs .. but you have several more VPS providers (Digital Ocean / Amazon) within that price range

Public service reminder:  Don't run a masternode at home unless you are sure you can have 24/7 uptime.  The network security and your payment stream will suffer if it goes down.

Public service reminder 2:  Try and avoid the more popular providers like Amazon, Vultr, and DO.  Diversity is better for obvious reasons.  Pick your favorite from this ever-evolving list

Your coins are never actually 'tied up' as such. You can move them anytime you want just with a regular Dash QT client. All that will happen is that the Masternode for which they were serving as collateral will go offline if you move them away from the nominated collateral address. i.e. it simply notices that it is no longer collateralised and ceases to be an operational part of the network.

Thats how the decentralised aspect of masternodes dovetails with the security of blockchain addresses.

Say your actual node gets compromised (e.g. someone either steals the hardware it was running on or a hosting provider goes down or whatever). You end up with no access to the computer running the node. All you do is get a regular wallet, move your coins to a new address, set up a new node0 somewhere else and life continues.

The only delay element to it is you lose your place in the que for payments, so if you spend any of the 1k just after receiving a payment you lose nothing. If it was last paid a few days ago you lose those few days in waiting for a payment if you move 1k back in and reactivate it.

EDIT: There's also an Easter egg in the payment calcs, 1/100 chance of receiving a double payment

<nitpicky slight correction>

The 1000 DASH are not sitting in your wallet per se.  They are an unspent output of a prior transaction.  That means that the 1000 DASH are sitting out there on the network waiting for you.  By using your private key, you can send them to another address at any time, like if you want to trade DASH for goods or services.  You can buy a pizza and a six pack of beer for example.

When you set up a masternode, it verifies that the 1000 DASH are still where you said they would be.  If you transfer any part of that 1000 somewhere else, the 1000 are not still intact.  The masternode will go offline at that point.

The original choice of the term "wallet", while easy for end users to understand is not quite accurate.  A much better choice of term is "keyring".  It is a thing that holds your keys.  You can have a spare set of keys to your car or your DASH sitting in your drawer at home.  




Strictly speaking, a wallet doesn't hold any funds.  It holds your public and private keys.  Maybe in the next "evolution", we can fix this misunderstanding.
