I should also raise the point that it's still an open question about how "dark" the logo should feel. There are a few approaches here:

- Embrace a consistent "dark" visual branding to coincide with the name
- Choose a neutral visual branding that leaves the interpretation of "Darkcoin" open in the viewer's mind
- Convey a specific message with the branding that turns the viewer's mind to a specific idea (e.g. privacy)

There are pros & cons to each of these. Some might argue that "dark" is a good schtick and will generate publicity. Others might argue that dark branding will cement an association with illegal activity in the viewer's mind.

With branding, it's less about picking what looks cool, and more about thinking through the ramifications, particularly in terms of how newbies will interpret our image / purpose / motivations.

I have something interesting going on with my client. At block 44901 and beyond, it is not reporting blocks correctly. I have the latest version and am not having any errors reported.

For all blocks > 44901, this is the output I am getting:

Code:
./darkcoind getblockhash 44991
0000000000222ad9204e39b43b03e6632387181abc046f0cb099f515d7f180d5

Btw, I laugh when I see gpu miners talk about their "concerns" on decentralization. We all know that miners go to large pools irregardless of the hashpower concentration as they don't care that much. In order to avoid variance, they can go to pools with 20-30-50% of the hashpower and then complain that ASICs will be bad for centralization and bad for the network.

Well put. We have a coin that is short-medium term ASIC resistant, and we've had 2 pools that have had almost or over 50% of the network hash rate for almost the entire recent life of the coin. It's comically ironic to me that people who are stating so strongly that they hate ASICs are flocking to the pools with the highest hash rates... They don't hate ASICs, they're just greedy.

As much as I agree with you, the only solution I see to the issues you raise is to hire a branding & marketing agency. Which would cost some serious $$.

Branding that tests well with the cryptocurrency community won't necessarily test well with non-techy people and new market entrants, and vice-versa. Really, it's the latter that our branding should be targeted at. The people here are already sold on Darkcoin, so why should our branding be tailored to our aesthetics?

The ideal way to go about this would be to have branding experts arrange focus groups for people who know nothing about Darkcoin or cryptocurrencies in general. The way we're currently approaching it is a compromise.

What I will suggest to everyone who will vote in the logo selection: please consider that the logo is not for us -- it's for people who know absolutely nothing about Darkcoin and are encountering it for the first time.

Rather than lock-up the current logo competition and stop progress, could we figure out a way to let Darkcoin proceed and begin a parallel discussion about DarkSend.

I think what you end up with is a way forward with Darkcoin being the corporate brand, but DarkSend being discussed in terms of the product brand.

PayPal is the product brand, that is owned by eBay.  iPhone is the product brand, owned by Apple.

DarkSend is the product brand, that is owned by Darkcoin. We can then work on DarkSend. We may go round and come back to DarkSend, but I think it should be up for review.

Focus groups are pretty much ordinary people. We all know a few people that could give us some feedback.

That's true -- would be great to get some outsider impressions.

Here are a few submissions for darksend logos: https://www.darkcointalk.org/threads/need-logo-for-darksend-and-darkgravitywave.154/

I do agree that "dark" suggests this coin is for shady or illegal purposes, however i think the name can stay, but change it for darksend.
The brandname should be registered as a trademark to prevent copycats also, this should apply to all cryptocoins.

Please note that neither shield or lock is really any good to use..

A shield is more anchored with D as defense (Defense-coin)

Any keybased none digital lock I can pick in 3 seconds.

Darkcoin is unique, and it needs a unique design - nothing reused.

If you want to use anything it should lean more towards its representation to litecoin - mother of scrypt as Dark deviated and took another path and highlight those perks. (which this logo actually does - it let's Light into the D merging them rather than being on top of eachother making them two separate units. (This represents Darksend in it's essence too)

Trust me on this one

don't get me wrong but 99% of those "logos" are amateurish. only a few are good(with little tweaking could be very good), but not excellent. I don't know to make one, nor I have good idea,  but we need something better, and when you spot one, you will know it is the One.lol

Did Evan ever update DGW2 in the beta wallet?  I just downloaded it again, but still can't sync.  Maybe it hasn't happened yet??
Yes, he did yesterday. I'm running it and blockchain has synced.

don't get me wrong but 99% of those "logos" are amateurish. only a few are good(with little tweaking could be very good), but not excellent. I don't know to make one, nor I have good idea,  but we need something better, and when you spot one, you will know it is the One.lol

Which are the ones you thought were good?

As someone mentioned earlier we need a logo(keep it simple and unique) like PayPal, MasterCard, Microsoft, Apple, Google, Nike, eBay, BMW..., not a desktop icon for a wallet.

Selling Darkcoin on eBay.

Is there a problem with selling Darkcoin on eBay?  Coindesk has an article today saying that eBay now allows some selling of crypto within a new digital currency category, but under certain circumstances.

It sounds like mining contracts are ok and selling paper wallets could be ok as they have to be mailed.

someone selling BTC - may not be allowed:

If this is the case, all you dark millionaires can sell some DRK on eBay without crashing the exchanges. I'll be a buyer  Grin

~EDIT - There are charge back scams on eBay. Sell BTC for PayPal, buyer raises dispute with PayPal saying they never got BTC and ask for refund. Seller out of BTC and having to refund.

On that related note, please don't accept reversible payment methods if you're planning on selling darkcoin.  Do it in person for something not reversible, or simply go to an exchange site and cash out safely that way.

Spotted a nice, classy gold/black logo: https://i.imgur.com/nLGuUAV.jpg

It is pretty clean.  I'd like to see it without any gradients and on a white background though.

My feeling has been that neutrality is the best choice.  "Dark" won't play well to a wider audience IMHO and trying to convey too much about purpose with a simple logo can bring about unintended consequences as it pertains to individual interpretation.  The "lock" logos for example - I see security, others see oppression.  Both valid interpretations, one very definitely NOT what we're going for.

It may be possible to convey more of a message with proper vetting, but out of pure pragmatism that sort of vetting is going to be way more involved than I think anyone is able to deal with under the current circumstances, if it would be possible at all.

My suggestion would be to come up with a short list of maybe 3-5, then perhaps a standard (short) survey that community members can take to friends/relatives/coworkers who have very little to no exposure to crypto in general and get their initial impressions, so that there is at least SOME sort of feedback from outside the bubble.
