Folks. Don't get too excited. This will take another day or two to correct (which means it may dip as far as 7 or 8 on low volume before completing its correction cycle back to about 11). The rise was massive and it needs to be consolidated. Also, it occurred over a period of days (basically a week). So don't expect any fireworks for several days and even at that all it might do is stabilise and set a new base before proceeding. Be patient and stick with your preference - either you're day trading, in which case take profits now, or investing in which case read the project roadmap to see if there's anything on it. That's all there is to it ! One of the best advices on investing I read in a long time on this tread

Is there any specific reason why dark is doing well and anon failed so hard?
Anoncoin are waiting for zerocash to launch their new alt coin, so they can use the technology. I would say whatever they were doing, it didn't do what is said on the packaging.

I wrote to coindesk. they have made a half ass update to their article. no mention of a correction.
Pioneered by darkcoin, X11 has slowly gained traction in terms of new coin implementation. Darkcoin, along with Hirocoin and québecoin, are perhaps the most notable examples of X11 coins. Additionally, the algorithm has been integrated by some elements of the multipool community, with several pools offering X11 as a mining option. http://www.coindesk.com/advanced-algorithms-maxcoin-dogecar/

I have rpcpassword, not rpcusrpassword trying rpcusrpassword i get an error that I have to set password.. so the qt is starting in server mode.... frustrating.. maybe sgminer assumes stratum and you cant do getwork anymore.. This is my conf / darkcoin.conf rpcuser=user1 rpcpassword=pass1 listen=1 server=1 daemon=1
/ sph-sgminer conf --kernel darkcoin -o http://127.0.0.1:19998 -u user1 -p pass1
still: [12:50:34] Pool 2 difficulty changed to 0.004 [12:50:35] Pool 0 slow/down or URL or credentials invalid [12:50:36] Pool 1 difficulty changed to 0.008 pool 0 obviously the solo... the only difference I have to yours is I am using sgminer, not sph-sgminer... and I am using the actual ip of machine, not 127.0.0.1 because my darkcoin conf has rpcallowip=192.168.*.* directive edit: are you sure the port is 19998

With the update, at least you call what they have now reasonably accurate.

FROM THE DARKCOIN FAQ: What is the difference between Zerocoin and Darkcoin? The first obvious difference is that Zerocoin doesn't exist yet. In theory Zerocoin offers superior anonymity compared to Darkcoin's DarkSend using advanced, yet untested, mathematics. The main problem of Zerocoin's implementation is that the whole network is encrypted with a single key that is generated during the birth of the network. The party responsible for creating the network key must also be trusted that he has destroyed the key without knowing it himself. This creates a trust dependency in Zerocoin's implementation that is too large. Has the initial key been destroyed? Does someone have it so that they can see every transaction transparently? Will the key break some day and allow every transaction to be seen in plain-text? Darkcoin uses simpler solutions that do not require trust. Coin mixing is a simple and tested solution and that will be enhanced in the next iteration (Version 2) with ring signatures and IP obfuscation for maximum, yet trust-less, anonymity. Please read it: http://wiki.darkcoin.eu/wiki/FAQThis action should be expected, IMO, doesn't Zerocash (FINALLY) launch tomorrow? Or at least they are finally revealing how they are proceeding if I remember correctly.
I haven't looked too closely at what they are doing, but (maybe someone who has can post a reply) it seems a bit clunkier of a process than (what I think) is a bit more fluid and elegant solution in DRK.
But there does seem to be a true "competitor" looming and i'm really curious as to what they release. I don't think they've said anything about algo, distribution or even mining at this point.
The guy running zerocash seems to suggest that the paper will be launched next week, but their alt is not yet ready. It is still a risk in putting transaction through an untried crypto, plus they still have a few issues that some will find hard to ignore - trust required at the launch, the project having been funded by the US military, long-term bloat. 1.) How do you know the key was destroyed? What if they faked it?
Are you thinking of anoncoin? AFAIK cryptonote doesn't have that problem, but I could be wrong. "Other issues include the RSA private key used to initiate the accumulator, which must be trusted to be destroyed by the generating party" https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=583449.0

Can't we go straight to $300 / DRK without all this back and forth for the next few months?

And we're back.
We're not back. We're still correcting. It will go up , then down again a few cycles. The bottom looks like being around 9 or worst case 7. We're about 32-48 hours away from the end of the correction cycle at which point we might end up back at 11.

Sorry, I'm a a bit lost in technicalities...
My main wallet is Mac 0.9.3.3, and have 4 VM ubuntu on 0.7.4. Is it safe to send fro 0.9.3.3 to 10.7.4, or do I have to backup wallet, updated to 0.9.4/ 10.7.4, and copy my main wallet over to them?
It's safe. Both wallets are on the right fork, although you might want to update the Mac wallet to 0.9.3.4 I updated on Linux from 0.9.3.3 to 0.9.3.4 yesterday. This upgrade is for DGW3? Thanks.

It was 80m in 2100 and was changed to 22m early march IIRC

https://darkcointalk.org/threads/the-birth-of-darkcoin.162/The coin supply doesn't have a set limit, but it will stop production of new coins eventually. 22m is the maximum that will be produced, however something like 15m is estimated to be produced.

The Darkcoin Wikipedia has been added to Darkcointalk. The wiki was created by Elbereth and AlexGr, really good work. If anyone has any basic questions on the coin, just point them there. http://wiki.darkcoin.eu/wiki/FAQ
