Something is definitely up with Litecoin the last few hours. This afternoon, my litecoin client on my workstation was making tons of connections and downloading an awful lot of data.  My P2Pool node on a different server that runs litecoind is also doing a lot of disk IO.  Not sure what to make of it, but it is abnormal.

It's a massive DoS attack, multiple pool owners are apparently reporting it now on BTC-e

Ah sorry then I'm probably wrong if you only mean the LTC pools are being DDOSed
I thought that was meant as a general pool comment not just LTC.

However, for example, on BTC over the last day there have been 3 BTC pools with bad luck that I know of (including DeepBit) that means that any graph would be skewed since those graphs are based on block submission and thus can be quite inaccurate sometimes.

I've been working on putting p2pool in the client, but I'm no longer sure if there's enough demand for that. Let me open this up. What do people think needs to be improved with Litecoin?

Well what possibilities have you looked into as far as merchants looking into accepting LTC for payment or maybe LTC merchant solutions?

He's taken on the herculean task of coding everything. Isn't that enough for one person? Instead of pushing and prodding at coblee to get things done, how about taking some of the work off his shoulders?

I dont know why but my litecoin node could not connect for a good 15min. Thought I was being DDOS'ed.

For litecoin to live a relatively long life the algorithm should be made to NOT run on GPU's very well. However if this is done and it's kept open source I an assure you reaper will just be updated again.

This is essentially a war between the SLC backers and the LTC backers. Litecoin HAS been winning the war but with the deput of reaper (by the SLC backers) that is putting way too much LTC in the market. The price has been constantly dropping. If it wasn't for the mystery buyer that keeps buying sell orders up to .0012-.0013 on BTCE the price would be way lower.

Aside from this I only see a few things that can save litecoin.

1: Change the algorithm to be GPU hostile and change it to closed source.
2: Change the block reward to something lower.
3: Change the difficulty code so it's harder to get coins.
4: Community motivator to get projects running that support litecoin.

If none of these are done litecoin is going slowly whimper out.

I have only one closed source software running: AMD Catalyst.

I pulled the latest source from Bitcoin and also checked in a bunch of fixes to address the "Address Spam DoS" bug. The fix I put in is temporary. I'm working on a real fix, but it's going to take some time. It's really late now, so I'm going to get some sleep.

Unfortunately, I have not had the time to build any binaries. So you will need to grab it from source.

What to do now with the very large .dat files?  Are they part of litecoin forever or can they be purged?

Yesterday I had a bitcoin transaction not show up in my wallet.  Blockexplorer showed it, though.  I did a bitcoind -rescan and after it ran for a few minutes, my wallet had the transaction.  With the DOS of Litecoin, perhaps your wallet just missed it and needs to rescan the blockchain.

addr.dat and debug.log can be safely removed. (But stop the client first!)

I don't think there are any Javascript miners publicly available. As I've already stated before, a pure-Javascript miner would be too slow.
There's a Java-based miner, however.
