Depends on the situation ... sometimes the very bottom is not the true bottom. But usually that is with low volume coins with no dev activity, etc.

What I don't get about the alt market, unless it's simply an issue of price manipulation, is overall movement --

BTC goes up, Alts go down in relation to BTC. Okay, that makes sense, and ideally alts move after BTC stabilizes.

BTC goes down, Alts go down in relation to BTC. This makes a little less sense, as logically one would think Alts would retain the same BTC ratio, or perhaps increase, to maintain their previous value. But okay, let's say BTC going down leads to panic sellers with Alts, so they too sell.

Now this is the part I don't get -- BTC goes up, Alts go down... followed by BTC going down, Alts go down... BTC goes up again, Alts go down, BTC retracts a little bit, Alts go down... BTC goes back to level before retracting, and Alts go down again. Basically the last 5 or 6 BTC price movements have led to Alts decreasing, regardless of which way BTC was moving. And the end result is BTC kind of where it started with the last rise, yet Alts lost a ton of value in relation to BTC price ... for kind of no logical reason.

So either it's price manipulation or Alt holders are so frantic and on edge that they'll sell no matter what... a slight breeze and they hit the sell button.

For example, a friend of mine told me he was going to sell ETH at 240$ after masive drops of over 30% in last month. You are right. I have been in such difficult times, so I have been forced to cut losses and sell most of the altcoins at low prices to make ends meet. If there are other options, of course, I would prefer to hold the altcoin.
In other cases, for example, a token from a bounty, I choose to hold it for a while analyzing the market, if possible then I will wait until the price goes up, at least until it approaches the price of ico or ieo.

And from the looks of it, the HST token that the OP is talking about, more than likely, situation # 1 is coming for this coin. From what I have seen during the last three years, in case the exchange rate for an altcoin goes down by 80% or more, then the chances are that it will never recover and within the next two-three months the trading will cease and the coin will die out. Why would someone do that? People are here in the crypto market for profits and not for loss. Selling ones coins at the lowest price happens due to panic only. There is something called panic sell and that is triggered only when you think the market is going to crash more upon a little loss in the value. I agree, one reason why we sell altcoins at cheap prices is because there are no good developments from the altcoins we hold. If the developer team is not active in communicating about the development of the project, I think it is very rational when people sell it at cheap prices to avoid greater losses

I think I get your point, there are some coins that if we bottom, we will not be regretting because those projects eventually die without raising back again, but when it comes to great projects, it is not worth selling a t bottom because those projects usually grow by 1000x when they rise. So instead of selling projects that we know has a bright future or real working case and active team at bottom, the best thing to have done at that period is to buy more.

I know that there has been question of why a project with real use case will even bottom, but we all know how the market operates, they usually being affected by bears at some points which is beyond their control, so the fact they bottom does not say that they are dying for us to sell, but buy back again.

I agree that sometimes being patient with our coins is not a solution unless we are investing for a long period of at least 1 or 2 years. If we invest in projects that already have products and have partnerships with various large companies, I think we can be more calm but if we hold coins with small transaction volume, I think it's better to sell to reduce losses

It is not a good idea to sell your altcoin while it is at the very bottom of the market, it would be best more if you are going to buy potential altcoins, not all altcoins, that are in the bottom of the market. I find it nonsense too to sell an altcoin that is at the very bottom because it wouldn't do you any good no matter what angle you look at. It will only be applicable to sell an altcoin when it is already hopeless but if you can see that the altcoin you are currently holding has the potential to be at the very top as the altcoin season starts, you should think twice first before selling it. I'm sure a bunch of people have said this, but there's nothing to say that this is the bottom.  In fact, the fact that you (and many others) are so convinced that it is the bottom means that there is a good opportunity for whales to make money on everyone hodling at this point because they don't want to "sell the bottom".

There's a good argument that the bottom will be mid-2020 at around $2,000.  Which means that selling right now would be an excellent move and shorting right now would yield almost 4x.

If you find very interesting projects which price will pump or Binance IEO coin, you should sell at bottom price for instant profits.
