I don't get it, why do our government and those incharge of handling our sport administration, why are they not taking our Athletes serious. They are not getting professional treatment and it's becoming a frequent problem. They keep chasing away this athletes and soon they'll have nobody left to represent the country if they continue like this. Last week it was the news of one of our own representing another country after she got treated badly and now this again. We need to do better and encourage this Athletes more.
This is bad. I don't know why Nigeria's are always on the news for the wrong reasons. There should be someone in charge of this ''getting a new bicycle", but he prefers to disgrace us in the face of the world, not minding what you and I would say or feel. The very truth of the matter is that our system of government is corrupt. Everyone chooses to do what they like without being scared of being persecuted for their wrongdoings. After we will blame the president for all this, forgetting that he can't be everywhere at the same time.

Someone once said this to me, and I quote, "Nigeria's are the problem of Nigeria''. We are not that ready to fix the country because of the way corruption has eaten down the system. The act that is very condemnable to us, our government follows it up with soft hands, that's why you see the same terrible act repeating now and then. This is so pitiful to behold. I believe the same reason as this was why Chinua Achebe says, "Nigerian is abysmally frustrating and unbelievably exciting." He's right for saying this cos that is the way all Nigeria feels about the country called Nigeria

It's really sad to hear that athletes that is representing a whole country ain't equipped with adequate facilities to help enhance their performance at the Olympics, it's a big shame to be Frank. It saddens me to see people who are devoted to make the country proud in their own way but the government isn't giving them all the necessary support they need in order for them to bring out their mind more in taking path in things that will help the country as a whole be identified for something, like this is Olympic games we are talking about here. Is it that the Nigerian government don't take the Olympics games seriously anymore? I weep for this country, if they can't provide necessary equipments for the athletes representing Nigeria then they should have just rejected to participate in the Olympics, I even pity the individuals that are involved in this Olympics games because it's very emotional to see other countries given their representatives full support while their own country isn't doing the same. Thanks to @bunddeutscherradfahr for coming through for Ese Ukpeseraye in the spirit of sportsmanship.

This issue has been trending online since the lady made that post but it seems there's misunderstanding here as to what many people perceive it to be. In as much as I know that in Africa as a whole, sports and athletes are not being treated fairly with the wages and provision of world classic training facilities, it is also important to note that this is a different case and that's not the issue here.

In the lady's post, if we pay attention we could notice "due to short notice of me participating....." But we overlooked that first statement which is the primary cause of her not having a bicycle to race with. The sport minister has clarified and address the issue after the post goes viral. I'm not attempting to defend or justify government insincerity thou but I want us to look at the factors that lead to the incident before throwing the arrow of blame.

I understand your opinion @knowngunman. But if Nigeria had a good system that works, one week would be enough to get a bicycle for this Nigerian athlete. The sports minister's explanation is shameful. He said Nigeria was informed two weeks before the competition that they would be participating after a country was disqualified. And the biking equipment needed for the competition will take months to be ordered and delivered. His excuse is not valid in this age where the world is a global village. Are these bicycles commercial jets or ships? I am not sure it will be very complicated to assemble these bicycles.

I am sure that with the right connections and financial backing, this cycling equipment can be delivered in one week. Do they know how important is the Olympics to other countries? Nigeria has diplomatic relationships with almost all the countries of the world and can connect with the manufacturers of this sports bicycle for them to deliver it on time. The honourable Minister should have told us the truth which is there was no money to order for the equipment because they had already shared most of the funds among themselves.

I think one of the major issues that affected this guy was the fact that Nigeria is not really too good on keirin cycling, so the main reason the unfortunate incident happened for me, was that the sports ministry didn't really prepare on this particular sport event(keirin cycling), even the guy confessed that he was given a short notice that he will be representing Nigeria on this cycling event. So I feel is something the Nigerian government should not be blamed too much because they really didn't prepare for this particular sport event so as to make the equipments ready for the athletes to use and train, Good a thing the German team where able to extend the olive branch by giving him theirs to use.

Let say one bicycle is $7k, be sure to see $10k on the budget and still they will not buy one but eat everything, that's how greedy they're. If they're doing the jobs very well, nobody will be angry when they eat their profits but they don't do any and if this continues, be prepared to see more of this kind of news all over the media and it doesn't put us in a good picture. When people think about Nigeria, they only think about poverty, corruption and other negatives things.

When your country takes you seriously, you don't have any other options but to make them proud and that's exact what the South African athlete are doing at the Olympics. When I check the news, there's always a positive news from the South African camp and I'm sure they're on the path to become the highest awarded nation from African for this year's Olympics. They have everything available for them and there's no controversy, that's the difference between the two nations

It shows the extent to which corruption has eaten deep into our country that people in charge of these things are more concerned for their stomachs than for the success of the country. For some people with the opportunity to be in a position for procurement, they see it as an opportunity to steal and embezzle funds instead of doing the job that they are there to do.

They keep chasing away this athletes and soon they'll have nobody left to represent the country if they continue like this. Last week it was the news of one of our own representing another country after she got treated badly and now this again. We need to do better and encourage this Athletes more.

Are you being very serious right now @Spaceman1000$, why do I feel like you are acting like one of those politicians already, you want to defend the minister of sports for being negligent to have known what to do but failed to do so? you think after the incident they will not call the guy to tell him what to say just to make the whole thing look like an honest mistake.

For the records, if the Nigerian sports minister feels he can deceive thousands of Nigerians he can't deceive me cause there's no way an athlete will be in Paris without registering his name and without knowing that he or she will be participating in a particular competitive.

May be you need to learn about the level of corruption in the minds of this wicked politicians in Nigeria for you to know what they are capable of doing, just wait till you hear the full gist when the main reason why the Germans helped the athlete with the bicycle.

~Snipped

Once you're the leader of any organization, firm, company or country, you're responsible for any and all problems that arises. That's one fact you can't deny. So if people are blaming the government or president, they are rightly doing so. The president knows who got which allocations from the budget and why but when those obligations are not executed, he doesn't follow through on it. I know presidency is busy but needs a committee to checkmate it. So yes, he will be held responsible.

The reason it feels like a dog eat dog over here is because the people are the top of the food chain do it without pity and everyone else who is opportune to be there wants to do it too.

Nigerians are actually doing better representing other countries and it's a fact. Time to call a spade a spade.

For now there is will be no change in Nigeria because of corruption. And from the way I see things about this government they have bad luck because of their wicked heart because since when this government come to power, Nigeria has not done well in sports. In this Paris Olympics 2024 that is going on, I have not heard any Nigerian person has won any medal. Tobi A missed women 100m race, Nigerian team on 4x400m relay was disqualified. D'Tigress were finally trashed out, and the worst part which Brainboss has said it all. There was no bicycle to race so di guy borrowed it from Germany team and that is that begining of his failure. The female wrestler Blessing was disqualified for drugs.

And finally Victor Osimhen is stranded because the two clubs Arsenal and Chelsea that were having interest in him have back out.

D'Tigress did well in this Paris Olympics; Nigeria's pretty proud of them for reaching this far in the Olympics with a fantastic performance that had them beat the 3rd and 5th(Australia and Canada) teams in the world. For D'Tigress to lose to the USA is not a bad output that will have Nigeria cajoled them to that. At least we saw a team that gave their best shot to face the USA team squarely to an 88-74 result.

We have to appreciate D'Tigress for their performance, Basketball isn't something we're too into in the country but they gave it everything they have and losing to USA isn't that bad because atleast it's a worthy nation that defeated them. The kind of facilities and training the USA team gets isn't the same with D'Tigress so their defeat is quite justifiable. Atleast we know they lost with their head high and I won't mind to support them when next they have any competitions to participate in.

This is our worst outing in the Olympics. It seems that we are going backwards instead of moving forward. We can hope for things to change but things seem to be degenerating rather than improving. One would think that the AFN would learn from their past mistakes and do everything possible to . That embarrassment that happened in Tokyo will not repeat itself…21 Nigerian athletes including Favour Ofili were kicked off the Tokyo Olympics because the AFN were incompetent in their job and yet no official was punished or is going to be punished. The lack of accountability in the AFN is what is affecting sports in Nigeria.
