There is a school of thought that suggests that Nigeria lost the AFCON finals because of their lack of fighting spirit and patriotism to their country. The blame is cast on the management  for prioritizing foreign based players more than home grown players. The Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa also share the opinion. Looking at the team, apart from the goal keeper, Nwabali, I don't think there is any other player that has his football history in the country.

Patriotism to one’s country doesn’t help its players to win games. People would seek to appropriate faults when the desired outcome isn’t met. The players that was fielded played their very best and came out second place in the tournament. Although the desired results wasn’t achieved, second place is not a bad spot to finish.
Also, Ahmed Musa isn’t the captain of the super eagles, William Ekong is. And he carried and managed the lads just fine. A pity they didn’t win the cup.
I bet if they had won the tournament, this “school of thought” that you probably agree with wouldn’t have ever surfaced.

What's your take on this news?

If this is true, this is going to be a big lift in nwabali's carrier but do you think it's better he goes to the EPL?
I've heard about the move too, I think it's a good one for nwabali bobo, he should go for the money at age it's not on his side, he has spent a good number of years playing for local teams which has eating a lot of time into his career life, so going to Saudi Arabia is a good move, besides no EPL team would want to pay him such huge amount weekly, he might as well not get enough playing time as he should be needing. There is no doubt about the fact that EPL will give him some good publicity, however age too is not on his side if go goes for EPL.

Ahmed Musa is the original Captain, he had that role for sometime now, Trust Ekong has to be the assistant that's reason why he takes the penalty without anyone telling him to do this and that.
Ahmed Musa not playing regularly was enough backing for him to wear that band for his great nation and country during this African Cup of Nations Competitions.

The boys did do well. No blames on them, good they fought hard until they lose in the finals. When they started they didn't get a good performance in general but as the jungle got matured, they adapted and blended in too.

The Super Eagles lost the finals to the host because of so many errors from the players and most especially the coach, lack of tactics no plan B right from the beginning of the nations cup, we're just playing and winning base on hope (no be by sabi).
We have the players but the way and manner the of the Eagles coach José Vítor dos Santos Peseiro used these players is just not right, is like playing a natural right footer on the left and you see him struggling to handle the ball and getting that quick crosses.
With all these mistakes from José Vítor dos Santos Peseiro, the glass house still want to give him another contract and I ask myself are they even seeing these errors and lack of strategy from him that they want him to continue?
To me is best we find someone with something brighter than having him continue his job.

I wouldn’t say the coach actually got it right in his tactics at the final but talking about the entire competition, if there was an award for the best coach it will definitely be him. Look we all focus on the attack prowess we Have and to be sincere it is by far the best in the whole of Africa if we look at it base on individual quality. But see that attack wasn’t winning matches or converting chances for us and that was a problem coming to the AFCON tournament, the first game the manager played a fiat 433 which is the most widely used formation but without attackers converting there chances and also wingers tracking back it causes us goals and the manager resulted into playing wingbacks and I don’t need to tell you that it profited us in the tournament.

Going into the final I will have said he needs to change the tactics a bit, because it was obvious teams started finding out how to bring out our and stretch our wingbacks against South Africa we got lucky. But why i wouldn’t Blame him is it takes a bold person to change his winning tactics in the final. But right in the second half he should have gone for a fiat back four after we conceded but he didn’t That was my only problem with him.

If you ask me, I would say he deserves a contract extension because this is his first tournament and we went to the finals. See if we can build on this momentum, we will definitely go far. So it is still early to ditch him. Moreover who do you want to hire, the NFF doesn’t pay the players and coaches their due wages so which decent coach will come to us  Grin

We have the best attackers but as a coach is it not for him to make use of his fire power? Some coaches may have the best wingers and you see them urging them to make some crazy runs to get the ball to the lonely attacker to get a goal, our own case was different, the coach never made use of his strength, commanding this wingers to always commit oppositions and get the ball in the 18 yard box, doing that always will make defenders in the opposing side to be very busy scared of not commiting them.
To say the truth, there was nothing special about our team in that finals and I wonder how we even got a goal in the first place. Fine we finally got that goal and you could see Ivory coast players were all uncomfortable, making unnecessary errors, they were all  disorganized to the fullest but we couldn't add more pressure, if it had happened that way I believe we would have won that game.
If you ask me between Santos Peseiro and Gernot Rohr who is better, I'd choose Gernot Rohr because the man has things to offer (rebuilding of the Super Eagles) and his play pattern is outstanding to me, he always go with a plan B in any game the Super Eagles find themselves, I won't agree with this new contract for Santos Peseiro.

I’m glad Nwabali is getting international recognition for his performance in the AFCON, he’s currently in a South African league, which doesn’t get much recognition imo. Saudi Arabia is splashing big money on players but I would rather see Nwabali play for in Europe. If he wants to make a name for himself and win trophies, the Spanish or EPL clubs will be a good place to be. I think football players are more about the money than the glory in today’s football so if he moves to Saudi, I won’t be surprised.

Well the Nigerian team has shown some improvements even when we expected the least from this team. The coach really showed us his strength and showed us the reason why we hired him and paying him that great as his tactics didn’t fail.Yes it didn’t fail I’ll say as these players were able to blend and defend as a team making every player on the pitch involved especially when the team is out of possession. Though he got to the final and changed on this tactics which went bad for him.

It’s quite understandable especially as Ivory Coast were a team that he played in the group stage so he felt on changing the style of play in a bid to hurt them. Though the plans didn’t work out but he must still be commended for taking us to a final in his first major tournament in charge. I think his contract should be extended and he should be given much more support as with this, he’s shown he can offer quite a lot with the appropriate facilities and support.

This is very deserving to him to be honest, his performance in the 2023 AFCON was very superb, he did very well and I personally saw this coming.
Like others have said, I also wish he goes to the EPL, but in the absence of that, the Saudi Arabia football league is still a very good place to be, atleast, it's far very better than the unknown south African league he's been until now, and to add, a 100 million naira every week is no child's play.
So, if he doesn't go to the EPL, but decides to take the offer from the Saudi Arabia league, that is very good for him and I wish him the best of luck and more great achievements going forward.

This is a nice offer but I wouldn't like for him to go to that league because he has so much to offer in football and we have better clubs in Europe who he can play for other than going to a league that won't last long before we stop hearing their reign.
Players are leaving the league back to Europe league where they can still shine. For me with the goalkeeper going to this league that if he accept is like he's going there to hid his true potential, at least he has already market himself for the world to see and he's better than where he's going, football is not always about money.

Someone better, who will that person be, if I may ask? Do you think, letting go of Santos Peseiro as Super Eagles coach will do Nigerians a favor by performing better than they have? In case you don't know, the Algeria football body is interested in signing  Santos Peseiro as their country's head coach. However, if the NFF decides to let him go today, by tomorrow we will find him in Algeria as Algeria's team coach. The best thing for NFF would do now, is to renew his contract, if not, we lose him to a country that knows his worth and value.

As it stands, it would be wrong if the NFF thought of sacking Santos Peseiro because he didn't get us the AFCON trophy. At least let's appreciate the fact that he made us reach the AFCON finals, qualify for the World Cup tournament, and also made us move from the 42nd position to the 28th position in the current FIFA ranking.

You may not know this because William Ekong is the one wearing the Captain’s armband but in reality Ahmed Musa is the real captain. He just didn’t play in any of the games in the tournament. Jose Peseiro was asked about Ahmed Musa’s role in the team and his response revealed Ahmed Musa is the team leader.

Nigeria were only good defensively all through the tournament but were all round not impressive, we did not play beautiful and impressive football, we wobbled our way to the finals.

Poseiro score to me is 60/100, He was tactical but not always brilliant. He should be given more time to with the team because the options of good coaches is actually not so much. And since the team has already built history and some kind of relationship from going so far in the AFCON and not winning it, that can fasten the bond they have together. Poseiro should be giving some more time.

The super eagles need a fix in midfield.

Well getting to the final in your first major outing with a team is one worthy of commendation and it shows that he can keep up high performance with this team. He’s done well and he shouldn’t be judged because he lost in the final. In that final the odds were against him as he played against the host nation who had the most and major fans in that match which serves at the 12th player in a team. Well if he’s sacked, who else does the NFF want to hire that will be able to leave up to his achievement and maybe pass it.

This coach has been a blessing to the team and I think he should be allowed to continue especially as we’ve got the World Cup qualifier underway. This coach is a good coach and for that reason, he’s got jobs from the Algerian National team waiting for him if the NFF decides to sack him.

Exactly, these defenders did well for Nigeria in general, joined both the midfielder's and attackers to play all role they could to ensure they win the game. Ola Aina though flopped during the finals has been my very best defender with Trust Ekong coming next up followed by Calvin Bassey.

For the midfielder's, Nigeria has no Central Midfielder and not even a proper Attacking midfielder's. Joe Aribo and Alex Iwobi shouldn't be called up again. They've done well but not good enough even if I know I shouldn't be criticizing.
For the replacement of thr management or manager, he should be given some time at least. It's always been Ahmed Musa! We don't have to debate over this one.

After Stanley Nwabali incredible performance during the just concluded CAF African Cup Of Nations, I knew he is definitely not gonna return back to his club Chippa United to continue his professional club football career because big clubs in Europe and Saudi Arabia will definitely be coming for his services and just like I predicted, the Super Eagles goalkeeper have received a good offer from a Saudi Arabian club to come play for them.
Talking about moving to a more popular league like the English Premier League, I don't think it'll be a bad idea for Nwabali but at this time of his career, he needs regular football time and that's why I think moving to Saudi Pro League will be a better option than joining an English Premier League club

I watched Ahmed Musa with the press, he was asked how he felt not playing...his response was very mature.
He said that he has played for others to win, he is okay with others playing for him to win.

I will post link as soon as I find it.
The hyperlink to that video is in my post. I was very impressed with the way he handled the questions from the press. He clearly understands the mission of the manager  and his role in making that happen. I have come to respect Ahmed Musa for his leadership skills. I don’t know if Jose Peseiro’s contract will be renewed, a Nigeria is not dealing well with the loss and they may likely turn their frustrations to the manager, although Alex Iwobi seems to be the designated villain, that might just save Peseiro’s job.

You are right that Ahmed Musa is indeed Nigerian player who is called the captain of the Super Eagles because the contribution he made to the Nigerian national team was very big and he was also the only player who made big achievement at the 2014 World Cup against Argentina.
If you compare it with William Ekong, everyone will know and will definitely answer that the contribution made Ahmed Musa to the Nigerian national team is indeed much more dominant than William Ekong , at the moment he may be experiencing decline in performance but he is legendary figure for Nigeria.
No one will be able to forget Ahmed Musa performance as the main striker for the Nigerian national team and it can be proven to this day that Ahmed Musa is still player who is truly idolized by everyone, especially the Nigerian people.

Ahmed Musa also stated that even though the Nigeria Super Eagles failed to become champions, there was pride that emerged from the struggle during this competition.

Exactly. He is a blessing to the Super Eagles and needs to be commended upon than all this discredit of him "not lifting the AFCON trophy''. We need to appreciate the fact that he got us there(finals) rather than not being kicked out from the group stage or quarter-finals like some other big African teams like Senegal, Egypt, Tunisia, Ghana, etc (just to mention but few).

NFF is supposed to award him with another contract without been told, rather than thinking something out of the book that won't suit the growth of Super Eagle to be a formidable team.

Without stressing much about the whole issue, Super Eagle made us proud during the cause of the AFCON matches. They really brought happiness and unity in the face of Nigerians despite the hardship we were all facing.

Stanley Nwabali the man who made the headline in the AFCON has come out to say that he would love to stay at his club for additional 2 years and I was surprised that he had to say that, the club he plays for in S/A isn't among one of the best, after all the threat he got from the South Africans because of his wonderful performance against the Bafana Bafana he still decide to stay?
He's not getting any younger and I'd prefer if he leave the club and find him self elsewhere to make a name for himself, with time bigger clubs would start seeking for his serves and he needs to experience European competition, but if he meant what he said by staying for his current club for additional 2 years because of the chairman of the club then I think is a big mistake on his path.
