Dears, don't hesitate and use the scissors whenever you need it. It is a practice in line with the recommendations of the forum, which makes it much easier for others to follow the conversations that you are holding, and I don't think that anyone will feel offended if you cut the dispensable parts Wink

The odds of winning in a lottery are extremely low, which is the reason why it's so difficult to win the main prize. If you set the odds in a gambling game as high as they are in a lottery, you will have the same results, every single bet will be lost and it will cost even more money since you are required to use some money for each bet while buying just a few tickets in a lottery should be enough to try your luck.
I think that this is why everyone who constantly buys lottery tickets and constantly loses gets so used to the fact that they  have lost again that they don’t get upset at all.
This feeling of slight disappointment is immediately replaced by a new hope that the lottery player will be lucky next time.  And such a person buys the next lottery ticket and again waits for some time.  And so it goes on endlessly.  But I wouldn’t consider it some kind of addiction.  Rather, it’s just like a child’s naive game and waiting for the hope of a big win.  But we must admit that there are those who are very lucky.

And this constantly stimulates the continuation of such a game.  In general, losing in the lottery cannot be compared in any way with losing in real gambling, where the emotions of losing are much stronger.
It is also true that they are used to every loss and still continue to buy lottery tickets until they really find the momentum where luck comes to give them the jackpot, plus the lottery is not bet that takes lot of money so they can accept every loss.
The average person drinking income is around $50 to $100 per week for those employees and buying the lottery may only cost $0.5 to $1 per day so this is not big loss.
Moreover, those who only bet on one provider who every week has three to four opening periods for lottery winners will be able to spend less on betting.

The lottery has become popular type of betting among lower middle class gamblers and even though the percentage chance of winning is very small, at least there is hope for those who bet and believe in the numbers on the ticket.
And all feelings of curiosity or waiting too long to win will be paid off when luck comes because the lottery is one of the bets that can make lot of money when you win even with small bet.

How hope and cost-benefit analysis interact is fascinating. It's cheap—$0.5 to $1 each day for most. But consider the long-term expense. I find it intriguing that people keep hoping despite poor odds. According to behavioral economics, this is a standard optimism bias. People often overestimate their chances of winning the lottery. It's about the thrill, the 'what if' situation, not just the money

However, consider sociological factors. Lower middle class people view the lottery as a communal experience, not just gambling. When the numbers are drawn, everyone holds their breath. It's not simply about winning odds. Imagine joining a community of dreamers bound by hope. In this context, the lottery becomes a communal rite rather than a bet

In South America, in some countries, the lottery has almost become a national idea. Unfortunately, I don’t remember which country, probably even Colombia, but I’m afraid I’ll be wrong. So I watched a program, where people work in a mine every day and extract some kind of metal. This mine is located outside the city, but almost all the people in the city itself buy lottery tickets. They probably think that this will completely change their life and after winning they won’t have to work in the mine risking their lives. They are also influenced by the fact that everyone knows each other and if someone wins something insignificant, then everyone will know about it and think that they will be lucky next time.

There is an expression: “The lottery is a tax on stupidity.” But I cannot apply this to these poor people. They want to believe that a lucky ticket will change everything in their life, and if they didn’t have a lottery, they would have to invent one.

As for me, I don’t play the lottery, although I see how my relatives behave like the people in this story.

Concerning the discussion of "the more tickets one buys, the better the chances of that person winning" we can draw an example from Freebitco's lottery system, where we see that people with such a few hundred tickets end up winning the jackpot, while those with millions of tickets end up winning just a tiny amount of bitcoin, and sometimes, nothing at all.
Your gave a very appropriate example and I'm sure most people here can understanding what you are saying about the fact thats the number of tickets we have will not provide any guarantee, even an almost small chances of getting a big jackpot.
I might also buy a lottery ticket but I hardly think about buying more ticket to get a bigger chances because I thinks if I playing the same slot base on luck, I rarely get a win, especially in the lottery it will definitely be very difficult so I choose to buy a ticket with small value just to try your luck.

There are some lottery ticket that can be very easy for us to make profits especially when we can buy more ticket to increase our changes of winning. It is not very easy for us to make profits or win from lottery because there are people also that are been betting on lottery and would do anything to just win the game. Those that understand how lottery works can easily increase there chances of winning which can be a good tool to keep winning. Luck is also required in lottery games if we really want to win effortlessly.
Buying more tickets isn't guarantee you are going to win, sometimes with just a ticket, you turn out lucky enough and win a good sum of money. But then some people do buy multiple ticket just to increase their chances of winning even when they understand it's not a guarantee they win.

Luck is a very key factor in winning a lottery ticket, just like gambling, it's place can't be overly emphasised as most times it's the factor that gets the owners of the ticket turn out winners. Understanding the dynamics of lottery sometimes get you to be at a better position to win even without getting multiple tickets but even with multiple tickets and no knowledge your chances may still remain slim.  Just like regular gambling you need to have an idea of what the games are before placing reasonable stakes that will turn out profitable for you.

In fact, those who buy many tickets is because they are seeing it more like an investment than a bet. But according to maths, it is a terrible investment.

Looking at a bigger picture, in the long run those who buy millions of tickets should win more often. The problem is that the chances are still so small in terms of probability that it can only be seen in the very long run, with billions (trillions? more?) of bets. So, for an individual player, it is practically the same to buy 1 ticket than many, because the chances if they buy 10 tickets for example go from being hit 200 times by a lightning to 20, which won't happen either, but they spent ten times more. And if they buy 100 tickets, they won't be hit two times by a lightning either before winning. You follow me, right?

So tusandii and Fivestar4everMVP explained it very well, and more lottery tickets is never, IMO, a better option than just one.

I might also buy a lottery ticket but I hardly think about buying more tickets to get a bigger chance because I think if I play the same slot based on luck, I rarely get a win, especially in the lottery it will definitely be very difficult so I choose to buy a ticket with small value just to try your luck.

Well I don't know if you have Entered and had Experience in freebitco.in, but there Every time you enter and there are tickets for sale to win because it is something that can be Generated very frequently where many Participate , but it catches my attention how players will share too many Tickets , it is incredible, and of course the more you buy because the Chances are higher to win, but it is not guaranteed, in a lottery that uses 4 Figures to win it is very easy, as I said, my friend always everything Only days he plays that ticket , and Always Maintains his faith of winning , the truth is I see it as very, very difficult for him to win, I see it difficult , but even so he says that when he Wins , he will buy the house of his dreams , and this Lottery is Called Baloto in Colombia , but he maintains his faith in Winning , that is Something that I do not see well, in this case things can be very Difficult , because winning Among so many so many Tickets are Bought and the probabilities They are very close to winning but not Close Enough.

The funny thing about this is that lotteries are sometimes won by the person who buys 1 ticket, but many times no one wins because the chances are daily, and that is something very difficult to win, it also depends on the number of people there So they are playing in this order of ideas, things can happen like this and without any kind of Effort , sometimes it is a matter of mere luck, it doesn't matter, so that's why when we buy these tickets , we hand over the money. nothing, it's free, because winning in this lottery the psoblaides are very very Minimal , things can be like that when it Comes to this lottery, it can change for the Better if things go well, in another order of things , too You have to consider the faith that the person has in winning or not Winning , if it is a Person who is playing Every day, then it is something that will always maintain hope , we do not know when they can do things well and win Something , but the possibilities will Always be.

Yes, you are right that it is not all about money but also about sensations and situations.
Sensation in the sense that every gambler who bets on the lottery knows that winning the lottery requires the right sequence of numbers and this is one of the sensations when it comes to predicting and getting the numbers that are bet on.
Moreover, the feeling of getting sensation from predicting the lottery can never be obtained from any bet.
The situation is usually that they bet because they are in difficult economic situation and risk little money in the hope of making some profit when they win and can help at least little gap in making ends meet.
But it comes back to the fact that they still do it with money and with the aim of making money.
Even if it only small amount, it can keep them coming back.
Who knows what results get and whatever feelings feel, it really has significant impact and will make addicted to every purchase.

~snip~

So, this is form of attitude or thought that makes everyone want to keep buying lottery tickets all the time because of the hope of winning jackpot and changing their lives.
The lottery is bet that can generate very large amounts of money but with relatively small capital, and this is the main reason that gamblers can always bet on the lottery.
Beliefs like this are actually too excessive because gambling one of which is lottery betting, is not place where people can be given hope in order to help change their lives, but because this bet can be done with very little capital, they don't care about the risk of losing and continue to buy.

Great observation and good idea!
It is the community of people playing the lottery that in some incredible way makes this community more dreamy and, I would say, more good-natured compared to the community and disunited to the maximum extent.  At the same time, people who buy lottery tickets, of course, for the most part do not know each other, but still they all somehow feel that they belong to this community of dreamers of wealth.  And that means about a happy life.  And not only the lottery player, but also his family members.
So, from the point of view of reducing tensions in the community, holding a lottery is definitely beneficial.  Even if only slightly, lotteries still reduce tensions between strangers.

There is something ritualistic, I agree, and not only when you play with others. IMO, that ritualism is something to avoid if you want to stay cold-minded: that's the straightest door to magical thinking.

About spending 0.5-1 USD a day, I think that you can get the same thrill doing it once a week, or even a month (you know that, in the near future, there is a slight possibility of getting rich).

It seems yes if the parents often buy the lottery and the children know about it. Since children have great curiosity, they will definitely try to find out by buying some lottery tickets secretly without their parents knowing. Children who have become adults started independent lives, and have an income will try to buy the lottery. At first, maybe because they wanted to reminisce about what they did when they were little, but gradually, they started buying the lottery more often because they already knew what prizes they could get if they could win. This could happen to children who often see their parents buying lottery tickets and will follow suit by buying lottery tickets when they are still small or when they are older.

I have recently read an interesting essay on this topic, but it was already explained it to me a few years ago.

The thesis would consist that, although the probability of winning classical lotteries is near zero (typically between 0.0000007% in the case of Euromillions and 0.000003% in the case of national lotteries), people is willing to pay an excessive overprice because they are buying the right to dream about the possibility of winning.

Although there are extreme cases that get addicted to lotteries, this is quite uncommon if I'm not wrong, because, if you are not paying for the probability but for the possibility, a bet of 1 USD is enough to buy said possibility.

On the other hand, national lotteries are known to be "taxes on ignorance of mathematics", but if these revenues financed public expenses that revert to the common good: would you agree to pay systematically 1 USD more in your annual taxes as something that ensures the right to dream of a dear life of every taxpayer?

I think you have outlined a very interesting thought-provoking approach to lotteries here. Buying the possibility instead of the probability. I would have to think a bit more about it, but what came immediately to my mind was the question for evidence that poor people play the lottery more than the rich people.

"Why do the poor spend more on lottery tickets than their wealthier and better educated peers?"

Since states know this, these guys argue that "In our opinion, states should not be in the business of extracting wealth from poor people..."

and I think they are right. The good part is that since more poor people play the lottery, the probability that a poor person becomes rich is high. The bad part is, the certainty that there is a redistribution of wealth from low-income households to higher income households due to the fees and taxes raised on lottery stakes and winnings (depending on where you live/play). I didn't say high income, but higher income as there is a negative correlation gradually increasing between household income and amount spent on lottery tickets.

People who are poor don't neglect mathematics because they are also stupid. But intuitively it makes more sense for them to cling to any possibility that can be maintained with the lowest resources possible. It still doesn't make sense because the money spent could probably change their lives in more impactful ways if smartly saved over a long period of time, but time is also a discount factor for their subjective perception. Telling someone who is poor to save for 40 years to change the situation doesn't sound quite appealing.

The possibility to finally be able to pay all the bills forever on time and afford luxury items that are otherwise impossible forever, outweighs any rational approach to statistics. It is similar to mental accounting, which is more of a psychological thing and not the absence of mathematical skills.

I’ve said this before certainly, but I’ve always heard that the lottery is a way of collecting extra taxes from people who are bad at math. I’ve said this before certainly, but I’ve always heard that the lottery is a way of collecting extra taxes from people who are bad at math. In the United States we even use lottery money to give to schools in order to improve education. This is quite ironic, but also a great initiative in my opinion, as people love to pay extra taxes in the form of gambling.
Here in our country on which we do really that that lotto/sweepstakes organization on which they are really that running that ball draw and at the same time they do really have programs
on which is something that connected with charity works on which it is really that something commendable. Imagine that if ever someone hits a jackpot then the money that they would really be able to get or
the winning would really be having that kind of 20-30% deduction which is really that crazy but in the sense that as a winner then you wont really be having no choice but to agree or deal
on what are their terms but still its really that a big money even with a big deduction.

Im not really that seeing for it to be some extra tax but basing up on the word then it really is but in forms of gambling. People wont mind about taxes
or whatsoever that betting on lotteries would turn out because the one thing that comes up into their minds  that they would really be changing up their
lives on the time that they would be making a hit.

Here in mine, in the last few years the Government has lifted the taxes on lotteries so that at first the first 10k, 20k, and now, 40k EUR in winnings don't pay any taxes. Above that amount, you have to pay.

I don't think it's unfair: if you win some money but nothing remarkable they let you be without worries about taxes, and if you win big, you pay a percentage of what exceeds. At least in my case, I would't care to share my luck with students or patients in hospitals who need it more than me, just a new rich guy.

Well thats good if thats the case but we know that lotteries doesnt really have to end up with those amounts and most of the time it would really be talking about millions of dollars on which you
should expect that you are really that obliged on paying up taxes and you do really have that point that giving out a share via taxes wont really be that bad and as long you do know that those
taxes is really that put up on the good cause or there's someone who would benefit then you wont really be bothered much but of course if the % deduction is something that you could swallow in.
There really just those people who cant really just that easily accept things because they do really like that they do have more but since you are against with government rules
then you wont really be having no choice.

Yes, and I understand them too. Depending o the country you were born or you moved to and have to pay your taxes, the feelings can differ. I live in a social and democratic country with thieves in politics like in any other country, but with a lot of people also who like to do the right thing, and we have cheap transports, subsidies to buy a house, (did I mention free healthcare and education?), etc.

So it's not just a matter of ideology, but the environment makes you see things from different perspectives too.

By the way, here’s an interesting question: is the passion for playing the lottery transmitted from parents to children?  It is quite possible that raising children in a family accustoms them to the mindset that participating in the lottery is both a ritual and a pursuit of the dream of getting rich.  By the way, I think that in most cases, children, having become adults and starting an independent life, somehow begin to buy the lottery
if once upon a time their parents did this, especially if once upon a time someone close to them or their friends won  to the lottery.
It is quite possible that when young children see their parents checking out the lottery and hoping that they should go this time and win, this delightful mood of expectation of something good is automatically transferred to the children.  And since this happens often, young children also rejoice in this mood of their parents.  And so, as children gradually grow up, they themselves begin to feel such good experiences when they become older.  And of course they also continue to buy lottery tickets.
I think this happens in most families where at least one parent, father, mother or, for example, grandfather regularly buys lottery tickets.
