The grue lurks in the darkest places of the earth. Its favorite diet is adventurers, but its insatiable appetite is tempered by its fear of light. No grue has ever been seen by the light of day, and few have survived its fearsome jaws to tell the tale.

Here is my new rig setup, r9 280x. Only one piece of it Cheesy

I posted a printscreen as you can see my temperatures are low. If you are asking how, well that is a little secret!

G1000 Powering 4x 280x and 2x 23cm fans with ease. GPUs @ 1080/1500. 2.95Mhs total.
The frame will be a closed case soon. Work in progress.

How are you powering 4 R9 280x cards with only a 1000W power supply? I can't even power 3 with 1000W, the rig crashes. I think they pull over 300W each, especially overclocked. Need to upgrade to a 1300W supply.

Easy. This is G1000. One of the best 1000W PSUs on the market. I can run 1200W power draw from the wall with no problems what so ever. This PSU can deliver solid 1000W to the cards plus additional for the rest of hardware.
I ran my cards @ 1080/1500; 1.12v for a week and this miner took constant 1200W from the wall.
Since cards ran little too hot in my warm room, i reduced the load a bit and now im running 1030/1500; 1.08v. Power draw from wall is now 1065W. This means that those 4x 280x draw about 900W from PSU, which is around 220W-225W each.

1065W and 2.85Mhs = 2.67Hs per Watt. Keep in mind that this is for whole PC. Cards efficency is around 225W and 715KHs = 3.17Hs per Watt. Not  bad eh?  Cheesy

Maybe I just got a lemon PSU. It buzzes too. Anyways I'm returning it and getting a 1300W EVGA PSU instead, maybe I can get 4 cards on it.

I ran 4 7970s on a 1500W evga supernova for a long time. They showed a load of 1250W or so with heavy OC with EVGA's supernova software.

EVGA makes a nice power supply, I have a feeling you won't have a problem with 4 on a 1300W G2.

I have 5 1300W g2's  Cheesy

Just starting to prep an old case for a shortly arriving 280X and found an intact dust bunny, he looks pretty evil.

Do you think the extra cost of the R9 290x vs the 290 is worth it?

Probably not. But in resale value, maybe?

A 290 hardly isn't worth it though, not when a 710-740kh/s 280x can be had for $100 less. Of course this all assumes you are pre-ordering everything since they're still out of stock most everywhere.

Here is my 4GH  [scrypt] Rig, with 6x HIS 7950 IcqQ x2 @666 khash/s - update: 673 Wink

This was fun to build while waiting way too long for my grakas Smiley

old:

new:

(actual hashrate value in cgwather and shares accepted count in cgminer are buggy)

The current setup is:

MSI Z77A-G45
6x HIS 7950 IceQ X2
LEPA 1600W NT
4GB G-Skill Ripjaws
40 GB Seagate HDD
current Riser: 3*powered x1, 1*non powered x1, 1*x16 riser@2nd Slot(always counted from Top)
Rig consumes 1490W now.

-skipped using 4th Slot.
-used shortening mod on 5th Slot.

-flashed Bios with 1003,1490@1.087 VDDC
-used optimized kernel binary from https://forum.litecoin.net/index.php/topic,6058.75.html

-used 13.1 Driver from techpowerup, installed it without sdk and manually installed amd app sdk(dont know which version is installed right now)-
-currently running under Windows8 64 bit with cgwatcher and cgminer3.5 with param:

CoreClock: 1092 Mhz
MemClock: 1490 Mhz
Powertune: 14
VDDC: 1.087V
ThreadConcurrency=22400 Intensity=19 GpuThreads=1 Vectors=1 Worksize=256

My old config was 21712TC with 1003(Core)x1490(Mem)@1.087V - By increasing core hashrate fall down - I stucked at 599kh/s.
Each card consumed 208W

With the new kernel binary and TC switch to 22.4k, it increased to 616Kh/s (2.75%)
..and it had also brilliant secondary effect:
Now i`m able to increase core frequency almost linear to my hashrate. I stopped with 1092Mhz with 666Mhz and...

FINALLY GOT MY 4 GH/s !!!!

Each card now consumes 224W so I think i have to do some more undervolting again Smiley

--
Edit:
Did a lot fine tuning and ended with:
+ pushed core to 1104 on 5 cards => + 7 Kh/s each
+ decreased vddc to 1.081V          => - 2.5 W each
+ switched TC to 24k                    => + 2 KH/s each

just love the result   Grin plus ~47 Kh/s, for 12.5W less power !
pictures get updated, when it pass the long term stability test
--
Quirks:
With my second rig I had some stability issues. The reason for that had been those fucking default energy-saving options of windows.
- Switch to your energy profile menu and select advanced settings. Disable energy saving for PCI Express
Scrypt mining just sends a few instructions & results over PCI Express, so this could be missinterpreted as a low bus usage.

when you want to rebuild this, you first have toundervolt the graphicards bios before mining, cause you would exceed the PSU limits!
--

gpu mining is just a wonderful hobby Smiley
hope u enjoy it and could probably find anything to incease your hashrate too

thank you. your post inspired me to build my own version of your creation. i had to make it more compact and incorporate 3 750w psus. i think you've made the best 6gpu rig composition...

I envy you guys living in cold locations.  Multi-card bitcoin mining was possible for me but Litecoin is just too much heat to put more than 2 7950 or 7970s next to each other.  Guess it doesn't help that it's the middle of winter here in Southern California and it was 81F today - bittersweet weather.

To the folks that made their case out of wood... Any worries of it catching on fire? flexing and such?

I really want to make one, and im wondering if there are any faults or downfalls in using wood

it would need to go well over 150-200 celcius to even singe, let alone catch fire. Wood is easy to work with, and does not conduct electricity. however, it is less 'clean' and heavier compared to aluminum

24" PCI-E cables with 16AWG wires and stripped ends - great for server PSU mods, best prices https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=563461
No longer a wannabe - now an ASIC owner!
