for mining, ball bearing fans are way more reliable, and I'd say required, unless you sell the cards after a handful of months.

I find that the killer is dust and not speed - unless you go max or close to max speed which is a bad idea for 0-24h use.

I'm about to buy a bunch of replacement fans for the Gigabyte 970s as they start to get beyond repair (cleaning and oiling them has less and less effect).

ah yes dust also play a good role in ruining your equipment, i usually clean my rig once a month with air compressor

That depends entirely on the fan. Some fans are made to run at or close to 100%. I've seen some video cards whose fan never goes over 50% on auto mode regardless of how hot it gets. I've also seen some where the fan maxes out at 70% and increasing it to 100% wont actually increase the RPMs at all. Which is why I never touch fan speeds anymore. I let the card do whatever it wants to as I assume the manufacturers actually know the specs of their fans.

As I've mentioned before Gigabyte fans are terrible. The small thin fans, pretty sure are sleeve bearings too. The 1070s also use the same fans and are likely to fail after about 12 months of use.

I've had some cards I've never cleaned, like Asus cards, and their fans never fail regardless of how dusty they are. All fans are not created equal and it's not a dust thing (unless your place is encrusted with cigarette smoke and cat hair). Some manufacturers willing put shit fans on their cards.

i think the reason is the card length... which bend a bit the card and put some pressure on the fans motors. the card was in a normal (filtered) tower

I had few STRIX 390 with failed fan ( third one) recently, just days after put to work. And Gigabyte fans ( many nvidias ) doing good after greasing them for long time now.

STRIX 970 fans just don't fail, no matter how hard I try. If they fail I will most probably get 1070 as a replacement.

STRIX 390 is completely different story. Panic bought some last winter and still have one left. Huge size, bad cooling, bad fans, actually nothing positive to say.

RMA here is free, you have a new card that is at least as good as original in 1-2 business days.

So one lemon isn't the same thing as having a bunch of data points. I have over 25 Strix 970 and 1070s and none of them have had problems yet with the exception of one. The fan was catching on the mesh wire jacket inside the fan, eventually wearing out the fan and it started wobbling. Even then, that one fan took over a year before it finally failed.

If you have to regularly 'grease' your fans, they aren't doing their job.

To be clear: On 3 out of more than 50 (giga and MSI ) nvidia cards I had fan slowing down and greased them. That was on 970G1 Gaming and 980 Gaming 4G. And they are still working, more than 5 months. On 2 (out of 2 ) ASUS STRIX 390 I had fan failed fast and RMA'd. In my country RMA for Gigabyte is same as for Asus. Only MSI is problematic. And 2 out of 4 MSI 980 Gaming 4G just died after 5 - 10 months.
and last few months:  MSI 1070GamingX 8G seems to have ball bearing fans. And Strix 1070 OC8G are workig fine for now too. Also 1070G1 Gaming8G's. Also no prob on 480 and 470's of all 3 brands.
And I was afraid of these new cards cooling.
Speking about many cards ( just part is mine :-(  ) from several miners.

My fans on my gigabyte g1 980ti fans are flying off the cards.
Doing an rma on them. This one card may have been part of my problem with that rig.
When they test the first one...it may show bad and give me a new one. But gigabyte doesn't allow to swap for another card. If they did I would get a 1070.
But how do you oil a non bearing fan? You would think they would put an oiling hole in the darn things.

Yup had this happen with old XFX cards, occasionally I pull out the fan blade that fell off to show people what happens on cards with shit fans. Gigabyte uses the same fans.

If you're wondering how to oil a sleeve bearing cryptominingblog did a article on it with easy to follow steps. Expect to spend a decent chunk of time doing it though, which is why it's just better to buy fans that work. Interesting that they still put shit fans on their cards now days, you think they would've lost more money in RMAs then they make by putting cheaper fans on their cards.

Ethereum armageddon is approaching, everything is dying down... Profits are in the shitter. Hopefully Zcash brings it back. Hard to imagine with all the Ethereum hash going around that anything is safe any more. At some point we're going to have to go through another purge where all the fat gets trimmed off (probably this spring when Ethereum is pointless to mine).

Something to look out for. Efficiency is going to matter a lot when that's happening. People with expensive power are going to be put out on the curb, private miners and niche coins are going to be a huge deal.

It's already happened once. Due to the nature of cryptos and how easy it is for anyone to mine it's inevitable.
