I should have waited for the auction! Although, if i were in the mix for bidding I'm sure the price would have gone up a bit. Congrats on the three quick sales!

Let me know if you decide to part with any more Casascius coins.
1162  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can we afford to lose touch with money? on: July 15, 2015, 06:15:00 PM
Question 1 : If Bitcoin or Crypto currencies replace fiat, would you spend more or less? The same. Bitcoin is less tangible than fiat can be - it's all about debits and credits on a computer screen, which makes it easy to "lose touch" with how much you really have or how much you're really spending.

Question 2 : Do you think physical contact with your money, makes you spend less? I like to think it does, but I always have a debit card in my pocket, so it comes down to how committed I am in the moment to only spend cash rather than use my card.

Question 3 : Would we have less debt, if we paid for everything in fiat? No sure I understand, do you mean fiat vs. crypto or fiat vs. credit or something else? I think spending will be the same between fiat and crypto (provided things can be bought as easily with crypto, which is not the case right now.) Removing the credit option would absolutely reduce debt, by definition, but limit growth as it would be tough to get a degree or buy a home without credit. If credit for material or consumer goods were limited we would see a greater control of the use of credit.

This is a really interesting topic to discuss, thanks for sharing it and the reality show (i'll be checking it out!) I've found that when I have access to check my bank account balances on a daily basis I don't spend as much, I save more, and I'm more wise with my money. When I don't have access I slip off the financial rails. So I do lose touch with my money when I don't have visibility into it.

www.motifinvesting.com

For a few hundred thousand satoshi you can invest in a mini-mutual fund (20 stocks or less) and you can pick the motif that the mini-fund follows - energy, auto, video games, vacation travel, internet of things, etc. Choose an existing motif or develop one on your own, it's a pretty interesting way to get into investing while minimizing some risk.
1164  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Say goodbye to cheap water? on: July 15, 2015, 04:40:19 AM
I don't know about people buying property over aquifers, although I wouldn't be incredibly surprised.

The fact that water is a more precious resource than oil (and therefore will be something fought over, viciously) is one that has yet to realize full potential among the masses, but it's absolutely true. It's not about energy, it's about life. Everyone needs water to live and water is precious, expensive to process (like turning salt water into fresh water) and finite in regions when there is a drought. The only small silver lining is that water does renew itself, but not at the rate that it is consumed and that renewal isn't consistent in the same place year over year, decade over decade.

If you can't buy land over an aquifer (and aquifers do run out), consider buying stock in water management or water engineering companies...at least you can make some coin to help afford the run up.
1165  Economy / Goods / Re: ❎►฿ Smoothie's Hawaiian Property (gauging interest for now) on: July 15, 2015, 03:40:44 AM
Smoothie, living the island life! Nice!

What island is this property located on? How far from the beach? How far from any trails, state parks, or wild space? Close proximity to any major landmarks (natural or commercial)? Some people like the quiet, some people like the activity. How close are the neighbors on either side and behind you?

Can you share any pics of the inside?

Thanks for entertaining the questions.

What balances are they loaded with? I assume they're loaded because they have holograms that say "valid" and "genuine" on them. Thanks.

Blockchain.info now has a warning up when you search that address, explaining that someone is trying double spends from that address. good find!
1168  Other / Politics & Society / Re: How to insult a "progressive" on: July 14, 2015, 11:58:18 PM
That was interesting, I'm glad to know that by Pat's standards I'm not a progressive - I wasn't insulted. In fact, I agreed with a lot of his political comments, not so much that his POV would be found so offensive. I wonder if he may be giving himself a bit too much credit for being really "out there" in his conservative beliefs. Some of his claims seem abstract - not lacking structure, just claims that aren't discussed commonly, openly, on Fox news (can't include all media of course.) These abstract items aren't good tests for the insults because they aren't broad enough to epitomize the entire Progressive political ideology.

I did find a few things he said to be hypocritical in the sense that he claims they are traits of a Progressive, but Conservatives practice the same ridiculous behavior.

1) "Progressives will only hear what they want to hear" - not a symptom of political ideology, but rather a human trait that affects progressives and conservatives alike (along with every other category of human you can think of.) People that are unwilling to listen to an opposing perspective exist, political beliefs have nothing to do with it.

2) "[Progressives] have double standards" - Agreed, and Conservatives do too. Eg, A foundation conservative belief is less government, however they want legislation to protect the marriage between a man and a woman or to deny the marriage between a man and a man or a woman and a woman. Eg, Conservatives support business however they vehemently oppose looser immigration policies, which would allow cheaper labor to enter the country.

3) "Islam needs to be legislated out of all Western countries" - I don't agree with nor understand this claim. It doesn't align with Conservative values either, which would support open freedoms to practice any religion. I don't think most Conservatives believe this either so this claim would be something to insult both sides of the two party line.

Last, Pat should use the word Liberal rather than Progressive. Do Conservatives not want to make progress on shaping government to their ideals and standards? Of course they do, so by that rationale Conservatives are progressive...some times more, some times less...as "Progressives".

Good stuff, thanks for sharing, would love to know what you think about it, Wil.

I am not a fan on everything he says. He got infamous when he started talking about islam. Same format. No picture. Just his face. Youtube yanked his channel for hate speech.

I am not a progressive if you can tell  Smiley but I agree conservatives could be deaf sometime. That is why so many of us from so many political views are using bitcoin. In a nutshell I am not a fan of anyone telling me my speech does not belong to me, but to them... Hey! Someone should make a Tshirt!

Pat is english I believe so a "liberal" has a total different meaning in the UK (free market liberal= conservative).
"Progressive" means the same in the US or UK.

This clears it up, the American use of "Liberal" isn't the proper definition. In America it's about people who have less strict (i.e. liberal) views on social policies (mostly). A Democrat = Liberal.

Anyway, I'm with you on free speech. No one can take your speech from you or my speech from me. I also believe that if I'm running a business I have a right to say what speech is being projected on my platform. YouTube isn't censoring Pat, they're just saying "we don't want this speech on our site"...and they have a right to say that. They're not prosecuting Pat. They're not insulting his views. They're not stopping Pat from having his own website from which to broadcast his videos.

The stereotypical Conservative will say - YouTube censored my free speech. And that's another hypocritical stance - YouTube also has a right to broadcast what it wants and that right should not be taken away either. So many people forget this really important consistency in applying the US Bill of Rights.

Clearly a mob of sjw triggered the yanking when his subject was islam. He is and has been on youtube for years without an issue.

What's SJW?

1170  Other / Politics & Society / Re: President Vladimir Putin tells West not to fear Russia on: July 14, 2015, 09:52:14 PM
He's been saying that but how is the West to believe him with pictures like these...

He plays the role of "ruling with an iron fist" perfectly! It's all a part his plan, the West decides to trust him, he offers the West some resource like food to a baby deer, the West approaches cautiously...first one slow step, then another...the west thinks "Maybe he's not so bad?". The deer goes to reach for the food and with nose down, eating peacefully, bang! The deer is shot and Putin has caught his dinner!

Talk like this needs to happen for a LONG time before the West start's to take his word.

1171  Economy / Economics / Re: Banks Suck on: July 14, 2015, 07:18:46 AM
I just visited the bank... denied until Monday.  Embarrassed

Global adoption can't happen soon enough, what a crock of shit this fiat banking system is.

What happened exactly?

There's a reason there is a sarcastic saying that implies people don't work much, it's called "working banker's hours." Global adoption of Bitcoin will be great but I think the fiat system needs to remain for Bitcoin to flourish. If the fiat system disappears the Bitcoin system will be completely exposed to manipulation (as we've seen with fiat.)

What happened? I took a cheque I received to a branch of the bank that issued it and they refused to cash it until Monday.

What bullshit! If they had the cash on hand to cover the amount AND it was an amount that wouldn't leave them vulnerable until Monday they absolutely should have cashed the cheque for you!

Aren't you glad that your account isn't with this bank?
1172  Economy / Economics / Re: The debt crisis explained very well. As a poker game :) on: July 14, 2015, 07:16:30 AM
This is clever, but I can't decide if the people being given chips by the dealer are the wealthy or the poor (in hand outs). In one case hands outs are being given as bailouts to corporations. In another case handouts are being given as benefits or entitlements to the poor. The latter example is similar to what's happened in Greece.

It probably doesn't matter which way one looks at as long as both types of analogy are true.

The challenge I have with all of this is the punch line. If Bitcoin is to be the fair system, this analogy implies that it will remain decentralized and therefore no one entity will be in control of giving handouts, bailouts, or other forgivable loans...I could live with that!
1173  Economy / Economics / Re: Greece Cannot Pay, Greece Will Not Pay on: July 14, 2015, 06:53:19 AM
Yeah, the EU will never see their money back, they just refuse to leave the Greece people out in the cold with an uncertain future. The ironic part is that the people of Greece seem to prefer the unknown, on their own but united together than under the "over bearing" watch of the European Union.

For Greece to turn things around they need to realize that paying taxes is required if people are to expect so much out of their government. And the Government needs to be willing to collect on those taxes, they need to be the bad guy some times.

Lake, this article can't be read unless someone has a subscription to WSJ. Would be better if you could copy the text into the post.

I agree that there's been a lot of positive news lately, likely the driver behind the quick price run up too! It's an exciting time to be involved and watching and aware of what's going on. Let's up the future continues to provide steady but safe and sound growth (e.g., the Fork, etc.)
1175  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: COINBASE first deposit on: July 14, 2015, 03:38:13 AM
Do any of you want to quote the OP in Euro? He's operating out of Estonia, quoting him on Dollars is almost pointless...it still requires him to calculate the conversion! $100 would be 91E.
1176  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coinbase is down? on: July 14, 2015, 03:35:03 AM
It seems like the Euro based platform may still be down -> https://status.coinbase.com/

Which sucks. But the good thing is that Coinbase is an organization that openly communicates the status of it's platforms for all to see. If there was something shady going on, something to be truly nervous about, there wouldn't be any communication. There would just be darkness. Mt. Gox just went dark, for example.

And it's great that we have forums like this to communicate when something seems off so the community can investigate and respond. I hope you all get back online quickly.

1178  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Sanders: 'We Have Got to Apologize for Slavery' on: July 13, 2015, 11:17:41 PM
The US did apologize for slavery, and in a much more official and appropriate way than rhetoric during an election cycle. The US Congress issued a formal statement (Resolution H.Res.194) apologizing for slavery.

Here's the text of the Resolution if anyone wants to read it: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/110/hres194/text

While I don't think Sanders is wrong, it seems a bit opportunistic given that he's ignoring the House of Representatives Resolution from 2008 and he's making his comments while openly seeking election.

By the way, the apology will never heal the wounds of slavery. Only time will do that, provided that equality is gained. The same would apply to the German government apologizing to Jews for the atrocities of the Nazi regime. What Germany has done really, really well is memorialize all the bad that happened during that era so that the future generations will never be able to forget (and therefore repeat) what happened. The monuments in Berlin to the fallen from those oppressed by the Nazi's is really appropriate.
