Brain wallets are the most safe and secure.

can someone please remind the clueless how to convert an arbitrary string into a private key?

cheers.
1. go to bitaddress.org
2. select tab wallet details
3. type in a very secure phrase that you can still remember
4. send bitcoin to the public address.

type in where? the only text input box i see on that page is labelled "enter private key".

oh, i also found this https://bitcointools.appspot.com but would highly recommend against it since it doesn't work offline.

1403  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [Announce] Coindl.com - a new digital downloads marketplace powered by Bitcoin on: April 15, 2012, 12:28:03 AM
1,775 views this thread has received now, and there are less than a dozen new songs that have been added since launch.

Whiskey,

... Tango,

.....     Foxtrot!

Seriously?

How many of you play music or know someone who does?    Come on ... I can only listen to Funky Coins just so many times before I need something new in the playlist:

How about taking pledges for certain artists or music genres even.  For instance, let's say I'm looking for dubstep.  I might pledge .2 BTC towards the first dubstep song to be listed on the site.  Or for specific artists -- if some pledges were made that proven revenue might help be what persuades the artist to sign up and upload.

Ok, so I'll do my part to help get this party started.   I'll pledge to buy at least 2.0 BTC worth of new music that appears over the next week.   If there is only one new song (priced at 0.2 BTC for example) then I guess I buy 10 copies it.  Preferably, I'll have my choice of 10 new songs to choose from, or a new album upload, etc.

Is anyone going out tonight?  Consider going to a place that has open mic or has a local band playing.  Pitch CoinDl to the musicians.  It costs nothing but a few minutes of time.  For every sale that occurs the seller gets 80%.   Set it and forget it, the coins from sales will arrive without doing anything else. Offer to set it up for them, if they're claiming to not have enough time or don't know how.

CoinDL got headlines in the music world with a story describing it as being the iTunes for Bitcoin.   It's way too early to get that title, but everything big once started small.

Anyone care to lend a hand here and help towards getting some new content on CoinDL?

tbh it's the unwordly sales registration form that got me... i was ready to start selling some tracks but couldn't be F with all that info right now.

i'm willing to bet other musicians have closed their browsers at that point too.
1404  Economy / Services / Re: [Announce] thrucoin.com - yet another escrow service on: April 14, 2012, 11:39:04 PM
Cool, you're the last guy standing.

What do you think of hiring developers to do smallish feature for your service?

i'm a big fan of outsourcing, but sometimes feel i need to outsource my outsourcing.

what did you have in mind? at what price?

thanks.

1406  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Best way to convert BC to AUD? on: April 14, 2012, 02:23:41 PM
even though it's not particularly cheap...

Hey! We give the exact USD-AUD exchange rate of the last trade on Mt. Gox with no fees. I'd say that's particularly cheap. But that's just me... Smiley

oh i didn't realise... i guess the aud/usd rate in general is kind of bad lately. i wonder if i'll ever see it at 54c again in my lifetime.
1407  Economy / Services / Re: [Announce] thrucoin.com - yet another escrow service on: April 14, 2012, 02:18:09 PM
anyway, it's one more option on the table for those needing an escrow service.

The help page doesn't describe what happens if there is a dispute:
Which is pretty much the most important part of doing business through an escrow to start with...

Yup, ... bump.

Now that BTCrow appears to have gone offline, ThruCoin is the last escrow standing.

thanks for the bump, i'll see if i can put in a bit of work on it this weekend.
1408  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: gBLse.com on: April 12, 2012, 03:55:33 PM
I was talking on the phone with someone who is new to Bitcoin and plans to invest in mining contracts on gLBse, and at first Dwolla wasn't working, then he accdentally went to http://gblse.com/.

Nice trollin'.

But you should sell the rights for the domain to Nefario for 1.5432345 BTC, or even better, forward it to the real exchange. I know the intentions for this are pure hilarity, and I think it's pretty funny. But it shows unprofessionalism and could drive investors away from GLBSE.

I just tried it and the whole entire image and logo is linked to the real exchange.

yeah, likewise when i found it a few weeks ago it was linking to gLbse.com.

pretty sure nefario mentioned too that he 'approved this message' Cheesy

p.s. why would they sell the domain so cheap if people are obviously going there?
1409  Economy / Auctions / Re: Bitcoin related sites on auction (all .com) on: April 12, 2012, 03:59:58 AM
...bitcoinqr.com however would be a good auction Cheesy
1410  Economy / Auctions / Re: Bitcoin related sites on auction (all .com) on: April 12, 2012, 03:58:49 AM
i don't think any of them are particularly valuable.

I am certain that someone will develop an app that will allow people to trade Canadian dollars anonymously via cellphones or the internet, thus eliminating the only small advantage that Bitcoin had. Once mints and central banks around the world start unveiling similar portable digital wallets, and developers swiftly move in to ensure that transactions can be done anonymously, the Bitcoin experiment will end.

dear eric, anon transactions are great, but you forgot the issue of 'quantitative easing'.

good luck matthew, are you sure you want to give up cold-turkey? it might pay to ease into it Smiley

how about a more 'serious' avatar?
1413  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] A public company will build a huge Bitcoin Mining Operation (ASIC). on: April 11, 2012, 09:34:08 PM
and then difficulty will drop again, and lots of miners will start mining, and then...
No, they wouldn't. We've already seen such a drop, and the difficulty is still well below what it was about 7 months ago. It will fall sharply and then level out before it starts going up again very slowly (unless it kills bitcoin completely).

point is, you said 'difficulty will double' causing lots of miners to drop out, but failed to mention this would cause difficulty to drop again.

He is describing an equilibrium effect which significantly decreases the amount of hashing power needed to carry out an attack. For example,  if there are 10 TH currently, you won't need to add another 10 TH to carry out a 51% attack. 7 TH could be enough if increasing difficulty to 14 TH level causes 3 TH of miners (30% of the starting amount) to drop out. That is what he is saying.

The actual numbers are hard to estimate, however it is certain that you won't need to create a full new 10 TH to 51% an existing 10 TH network. True attack costs are less than people naively assume.

yeah i get that but guess what happens as soon as they drop out? you failed to mention it too.

1417  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: One wallet for home and work? on: April 11, 2012, 08:17:55 AM
you're fine for viewing balances, but as soon as you spend from one wallet, they'll become unsynchronised.

i'm actually investigating the use of truecrypt+dropbox for a similar purpose.
1418  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: [ANN] International Bitcoin Exchange - with options market - coming soon on: April 11, 2012, 05:30:27 AM
Interesting - one suggestion to gain interest from Aussies would be to support fee free bank-to-bank AUD deposits/withdrawals (for at least people using bank accounts from one of the "big four".)

cash walk-ins in sydney would be cool too Cheesy not that i can walk that far.
1419  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Best way to convert BC to AUD? on: April 11, 2012, 05:21:12 AM
I'm mostly worried about how exactly I get BC on my bank account, rather than the exchange rate..

in that case, this page is perfect for you... https://www.spendbitcoins.com/convert/pay-bills-with-bitcoins/
currently giving 4.85 AUD
1420  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Blockchain.info API JSON Archives? on: April 10, 2012, 11:52:29 PM
It's Berkeley instead of JSON, but why not just use the actual blockchain?

because I enjoy some of the derived data [blockchain.info] include.
