161  Economy / Reputation / Re: User @Amph - sale of BTT account via PM! on: February 24, 2023, 02:34:51 PM
Yeah, I don't see too many users not believing you here Lucius. I wouldn't recommend risking your account security over this. Whether or not users want act upon the evidence supplied is up to them. Some already have. I absolutely wouldn't give up your account security. The thing is; you aren't just giving them temporary access, because undoubtedly you've got other personal messages; which means they could see those too which goes beyond the agreement, which is an invasion of privacy not only for you, but for the other users you've communicated with. I'm not saying the person you entrust with this responsibility will go prying through that information, but they might accidentally see it, which we can't just turn our brains off.

I don't doubt what you're saying is true, I'm more concerned about how the situation came about, since there does seem like someone is directing users to contact other users without any permission whatsoever. Almost, impersonation of you via Telegram.
162  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Is Metal Seed Storage Safe in an Earthquake? on: February 24, 2023, 02:29:05 PM
Yeah, easier said than done.
It was hard for me to find a place to store a pair of keys in case both me and my wife lost ours, (obviously, the inside of the house was a no), and with a hardware wallet, you must exclude a person keeping those, so, how many people have 2- or 3 properties with land so they can bury a case or a box far away from prying eyes?
Not many. I know I don't, unless I enlisted the support of family members. However, how many people are prepared to trust extended family members? Since, closeness, and therefore trust of family can vary depending on the individual. There's only a few people in the world I'd trust without any questions asked, but I'm not sure I could trust their security. As a person, they might be the ultimate trustworthy person, but because they aren't aware or as concerned about security, I wouldn't trust them to handle something so sensitive.

I'd like to see some alternatives rather than just saying to new users store it in multiple locations, because the reality is not many people can do that without additional risks.
163  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Thinking of separating my holdings into two physical locations. on: February 24, 2023, 02:25:09 PM
i was thinking more like robbers split up the husband and wife and interrogate them separately. better make sure their stories are consistent. if not then someone is lying.
For the vast majority of people, this isn't going to be a reality. This is; either you live in a part of the world which is notorious for this sort of crime or you're a rather high profile person. This sort of stuff doesn't really happen in a lot of people's realities. Usually, when this sort of stuff happens it's more related to drugs than how much money you hold, otherwise you'd just see these types of people going to rich neighbours, and doing this all the time.

Despite, criminals being criminals; they aren't risk inverse. They're much more likely to attack, and try to get a large holding of fiat money, since they can find that physically within the property, instead of interrogating you for your Bitcoin which is much easier to conceal, and isn't guaranteed you own much either unless you've tied it to your real world identity.

I just feel for most users here, this sort of situation is just so incredibly unlikely, that it's not worth worrying about too much. Instead, protect against not revealing you have Bitcoin to the public, and only to those that need to know. Family, tax man, potentially some friends depending on what situation your in.
164  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Securing Your Seed Phrase with Washers on: February 24, 2023, 02:20:16 PM
Copper is good at several things: conducting electricity, killing microbes, easy to work with (bending/soldering) and lasts very long
It's naturally antibacterial, obviously that's good for certain applications, but not so much for a seed backup. Conducting electricity isn't that helpful in this use case either. However, by no means is it a useless metal. Hence, why we still use it today for various applications. Every home likely has copper used somewhere inside it, and a lot of them have waste that they could potentially cut from it. I've seen some horrendous jobs where a contractor has come in, cut into the pipe, and inserted what is basically a cap. Then, they just leave the excess pipe there. So, free pipe. There are certain times they do this because the owner might want to expand at a later date, but sometimes it's also due to laziness or not having the means to dispose of it.

Try to make a 1 mm deep seed word in stainless steel, how many times do you need to hit it?
Now that depends on how strong you're, right? Wink
165  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: February 24, 2023, 02:10:22 PM
I'll get my predictions out soonish. Although, I'm probably not betting on this weekend. There's more interesting events coming up, and more opportunity to earn in my opinion. At the moment, I'm thinking Nikita Krylov gets it done against Spann, André Muniz against Brenden Allen, for not other reason than being the less experienced fighter, and the fact that Allen has let me down in the past, and finally I'm thinking that Tatiana Suarez gets the job done, probably via decision. There's a few pieshitters as tokeweed would say on this event, so I'd be careful with the odds being offered. A lot of them are a lot wider than the actual fights will show.

It's a good event, I think they'll be some decent competitive fights, I just know the Jon Jones event is going to be even better, and I want to make the most of that weekend with whiskey, and food Wink.
166  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: [Rugby] Union 🏉 League 🏆 Super 6/7s Pro14, Cups & Tours | Olympics | Touch.... on: February 24, 2023, 02:05:45 PM
Anyway, I'm predicting Wales win against England. I know, I'm a mad man. We definitely do seem to pull it off despite what situation we're in. Obviously, the current issues surrounding Welsh rugby isn't exactly normal, and is quite unprecedented, but I'm hoping the worst is behind us. Maybe, from now on we can start building an actual rugby team without too much drama.

I thought that 60 cap rule was also to do with a player playing outside Wales?
In Ireland we have such a rule, even more restrictive, if a player wants to play for
a club outside Ireland he is welcome to do so but he wont be considered for the
national team unless you are Johnny Sexton
That's right. Although, again I don't really see why we should be punishing players doing what's best for their careers. I know, Welsh rugby at a club level would suffer as a result, but I'm not a fan of punishing players for deciding to play abroad. At the end of the day, if they're from the country, then we should be supporting them whatever their career choices are. Of course, I want to see Welsh club rugby excel too, but maybe they just need to work on offering the players more for staying in the country.

167  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: [Rugby] Union 🏉 League 🏆 Super 6/7s Pro14, Cups & Tours | Olympics | Touch.... on: February 23, 2023, 08:18:11 PM
Well, the players seem to have got what they wanted out of the contract negotiations. They were threatening to forfeit the English game this weekend. So, Wales vs England is still going ahead. We've reduced the cap requirement to be called up, allowing players with less caps in their clubs to play for the national team. Something that WRU put in place, which unfortunately only hurts the Welsh team, since we're a rather small nation to begin with.

Honestly, if I had my way I'd scrap it altogether, and just allow the manager to call up who he thinks his deserving. It'll likely be more experienced lads anyway, but at least it gives some of the youngsters a chance, and we might have some hidden talent which could help us out. You know, when Wales is only around 3 million in population wise, we need all the help we can get to compete in the competitions. Especially, when London alone has more population than our who country.

Anyway, I expect us to lose, but hopefully we get to see some of that hidden talent Wink. We definitely do have some youngsters that were deserving to be called up. Hopefully, that happens now.
168  Other / Meta / Re: [ASK] My account is blocked on: February 23, 2023, 08:11:17 PM
I don't think they're banned, they just never posted.
A few of those are proxy banned, i.e met the evil fee when registering, and never decided to pay. Hence, they haven't actually posted anything. A lot of our users are proxy banned, and therefore appear like they registered, and never posted.

Do all these belong to a single individual? What's the big idea of account farming in this way! I never really get it in recent times when we've got the merit system to put a check on growth. Common on @OP, this isn't so pleasing for the eyes if these are all you. It might not be an offence that could attract the ban penalty but, such farm isn't what we like to see on the forum.
Probably not, considering most are proxy banned, and they were registered at different times. I think they're just the usernames that could potentially match what the original poster obfuscated. Again, I'm not sure why you'd censor the username if you want it to get unbanned. If you wanted to do it privately, you'd just follow what the message says, and email the address.
169  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Thinking of separating my holdings into two physical locations. on: February 23, 2023, 07:19:26 PM
So if you don't trust your wife to know about your bitcoin, do you trust her to know about your fiat? Do you have secret off shore bank accounts which you skim some of your income in to each month? What about your other assets together - property, cars, etc.? Better keep her name off of everything and make her pay rent to live in your house?
I feel like a lot of users treat Bitcoin like it's some super secret thing, but ultimately it's just an alternative. I get it; we are our own bank, and therefore we are responsible for it. However, I'd like to think people can trust their spouses. I mean, if they have any doubt it begs the question why they got married in the first place; since they're signing a document which basically means they're entitled to half of everything.

If you aren't telling your wife about your Bitcoin, you probably aren't telling the tax man either. Since, I believe the divorce solicitor can inquire about the tax man about undeclared earnings. So, you'd be in big trouble, however it went.

Trust in your wife is very specific depending on how you judge her behavior, our location has low divorce cases
I wouldn't look at locations or the local statistics of divorce. Just look at your wife, and determine whether you trust her or not. If you don't, I imagine your marriage isn't going all that well. You have to trust certain people in your life, that's what humans do. However, you get to pick, and they aren't like banks that will use you, as long as you pick a good one.
170  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: [Boxing] Jake Paul vs Tommy Fury - February 26 in Saudi Arabia on: February 23, 2023, 07:13:39 PM
I won't be betting on the fight. There's way too many unknowns, since we don't actually know the true level of Jake yet, although he has looked decent. We sort of know what to expect from Tommy Fury, but again that all depends on how Jake goes about the fight.

There's also the size difference, and those extra long arms of Tommy Fury against Jake who hasn't really had to deal with a sophisticated jab yet. Again, I'm not sure Tommy Fury is a boxer with a sophisticated jab despite basically being built for it.

I'll be tuning in though, and I think that speaks volumes of what Jake Paul has done. I don't usually watch Tommy's fights, but I've tuned into almost all of Jake Paul's. He definitely brings eyes to the sport, and while I wouldn't normally be excited for a Jake Paul match up, I'm pretty excited for this bout. Mainly, out of curiosity.
171  Economy / Reputation / Re: User @Amph - sale of BTT account via PM! on: February 23, 2023, 07:07:12 PM
Well if we are theorizing here, why would the telegram user request a screenshot of the PM (especially if he is claiming to be the owner of the account), he wouldn't need a screenshot. Telegram user could have been trying to setup Lucius for not posting about an account seller contacting him.. or maybe thought Lucius would try to buy it and they wanted the screenshot to post themselves in order to smear Lucius? *shrug*
I'm not sure what the motive is behind request the screenshot on Telegram. However, the fact that they asked for the screenshot might indicate they don't know if the user did actually send the message, implying that a user is either trying to conjure some drama involving Lucius or in fact trying to not reveal their identity, and is asking account sellers to send these types of messages to DefaultTrust/DefaultTrust2 users.

PM has been reported to admins/global mods asking them to confirm its authenticity.
Like I said, they're unlikely to get involved since it's not regarding forum rules. It's a community matter, rather than an issue from a moderation stand point. There's no real way of verifying the message exists without potentially compromising your account, which I absolutely don't suggest you do.

Although, it does seem like Amph hasn't exactly disputed they sent that personal message to you.
172  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hardware wallet questions on: February 23, 2023, 05:39:10 PM
Just a heads up that it might be better to not use the physical paper that's given by hardware wallet companies. Writing the backup down on a simple piece of paper can make it seem more 'unimportant' to thieves, compared to the paper given by hardware wallet companies that clearly indicates that it's a crypto wallet backup.
On the other hand, if a thief gains access to wherever you're storing it, a piece of paper with random words scribbled on it, might not be as notable to them, while a piece of paper which says BITCOIN BACKUP or something along those lines might appeal to them more.

Obviously, you don't want to be in that position in the first place, but it might be worth something considering. There's a whole discussion going on with steel washers, and how best to store them so they aren't immediately obvious to any intruders.

Personally, I prefer not writing down things as is, and like to prepare for most situations that can present themselves, i.e writing it down on a plain piece of paper instead of having it broadcast what it's used for. Obviously, there's other issues with that, if you ever experience memory loss you might not know what that piece of paper is for, and could potentially chuck it away. There's pros, and cons to both methods.
173  Economy / Reputation / Re: User @Amph - sale of BTT account via PM! on: February 23, 2023, 05:32:21 PM
The above post I made is obviously speculation, and I guess it depends on if any other evidence is brought forward. However, at the moment it seems like both users don't actually know what went on exactly.

Only admins can can see private messages, or mods too? Or for mods to see the PM, it has to be reported? I am asking so at least we can confirm that PM is legit and indeed sent by Ampth (even though I see no reason why Lucius would go through such hassle).
Global moderators, and admins can see it when reported. If you go, and look at a personal message you've received, and click report to moderator you'll be able to see who can review them, since you can pick who you want. However, admins can probably see any personal message if they wanted too, but this certainly isn't routinely done. Although, this falls out of the scope for them to verify since it's not breaking the rules of the forum. So, please no one report personal messages like this, only one's that break the forum guidelines.

There are other ways to verify it, obviously. In the past, some users have given temporary access to trustworthy users, but I wouldn't recommend that either.
174  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why confidential TXs are not implemented in Bitcoin? on: February 23, 2023, 05:29:24 PM
What do you mean exactly by confidential? I'm not sure if this is a technical term I'm just not familiar with, but if you mean transactions which don't appear on the Blockchain or somehow obfuscated? Doing that, would go against the fundamentals of having a public ledger like the Blockchain.

There's a few alternative coins that provide something similar, although those are privacy focused coins. Whereas, Bitcoin prioritizes verifiability, and integrity over privacy. Although, that's not to say Bitcoin isn't focused on privacy either, just in a different way to conventional money systems.

Since, I can't review the Youtube video right now; I'll edit the post a little later once I've taken a look if need be.
175  Economy / Reputation / Re: User @Amph - sale of BTT account via PM! on: February 23, 2023, 05:19:22 PM
It's quite possible that someone is using Telegram looking for account sellers, and then pointing them to a random user on DefaultTrust or DefaultTrust2, trying to get them to admit that they want to sell the account knowing that the DefaultTrust/DefaultTrust2 would say something publicly about it.

There could be several motivations to this; honeypotting which this would be considered, isn't exactly encouraged around here, and actively frowned upon itself. So, the Telegram user doing it could be trying to do it anonymously, and using some other user to deal with it on Bitcointalk. However, that's not exactly great either; since they're effectively putting the user they're saying to contact on Bitcointalk under risk, as it appears they want to buy the account. I suspect in an attempt to keep themselves anonymous due to the frowned upon honey potting. However, I don't see why they just wouldn't send the user to a newly created account, and then report that publicly. Going through the verification that's required if necessary.

I don't know, that's my best guess since Lucius seems to be rather dumbfounded by why they received the personal message in the first place.
176  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: February 23, 2023, 05:10:31 PM
And I don't believe anyone who is not a fighter understands that. Even I would not understand that. And the "diamonds" that you are talking about who just train and never go pro are probably just scared or maybe they are just doing very good in other aspects of life. So they probably do not even fill the need to go pro in fighting
You don't have to be a fighter to figure out people like status. It's what drives our world, it's the reason there's competitions, and recognition for the highest performing in all sports. It's taught at a young age, that being the best is something to be proud of. So, yeah I think most people understand it. Even if the pound for pound title isn't exactly that official its a lot more subjective than the other achievements, such as belts. I don't get caught up too much in the nitty gritty of the pound for pound because it's so subjective. Although, I also believe that you shouldn't lose that supposed title if you've moved up, and got beaten by someone who is much larger than you.

Conor was probably the pound for pound champ in his peak, he dominated. Jon Jones is hard to gauge because he never really steeped out of his division until now. Then you've obviously got Khabib who also didn't try to take over other divisions, and stay put. I mean Khabib was brilliant, but his career in the UFC was rather short, so while he remained undefeated up to his retirement, there's no teller what could've happened given a little bit longer. A lot of fighters go on a streak to then later lose in their latter stages of their career, that's something normal, and somewhat expected.
177  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Is Metal Seed Storage Safe in an Earthquake? on: February 23, 2023, 05:00:49 PM
I agree with Charles-Tim. Do a multi sig with one in your home, one is with you, one is someplace else and another is in yes another place.
Pick the amount you want to have and the amount you want to need to have to restore to move the coins.

Might not be as convenient but so be it.
Does the average person really have that many places to store the credentials though? I feel like they don't, and by splitting it up in places which you don't own, you present yourself with even more risk. While, I like the idea of a multisig, storing the credentials in two different geographical places is pretty hard. Especially, securely.

Of course, we've all heard the stories of people digging in a random field, and storing various things. However, I've never been much of a fan of that. What happens when that gets dug up by a construction company to build the housing on it or whatever the circumstances is.

You ideally need to own, and no one else has access to it, even theoretically.
178  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: I found a paper wallet on a beach ... seriously on: February 23, 2023, 04:52:58 PM
Maybe. But maybe he does. In any case, cash found on the street is not better in any way.
Right, and in the same way I don't expect my cash to be returned to me when I've lost it. A lot of the time I don't even bother going to check since I've already expected it to be taken. However, that entirely depends on how you lost it. As mentioned above, if it's in a wallet then it makes sense to try to recover it, and you can go back to area since smoeone might have handed it in to the organisation or whatever.

And I neither expect from people to carry paper wallets on their physical wallet. It doesn't make sense to me. Paper wallets are backups. You don't carry backups on your bag, unless you move away. If you want to spend bitcoin outside your place, use your mobile phone with a lightning wallet installed.
Yeah, I'd agree with that. I'm not sure what situation would present itself that you're carrying the very backup to your Bitcoin wallet physically with you. I'd be much more inclined to believe people were carrying a non encrypted hot wallet on their phones, than their seeds. However, generally I've often been surprised by users methods. A lot of users will ignore the initial warning that pretty much every piece of software has about storing your seed in a safe place upon generation.

179  Economy / Speculation / Re: If history repeats itself: 2023 vs 2019 on: February 23, 2023, 04:49:27 PM
Since we're probably and most likely out of the bear, this goes with the season of the end of year where most of times that it is when the surge happens.

Prior to the halving we might get some push at the last weeks of December by this year. I do believe that history will definitely repeat itself and if not then there's a likelihood that we shall see its pattern soon.

But with the situation that we're all experiencing right now, this is a lovely chart to look at.
I wouldn't say we're out of the bear season yet. I mean, Bitcoin is still rebounding, while the general feeling is more positive as of recent, however we don't know what this year holds yet. It hasn't really started, and with the recession looming I wouldn't want to make a prediction based on any charts, since I genuinely believe we're in unprecedented times, which charts don't typically account for.

I guess I'm an outlier, and I'm not too bothered by the short term price performance, but it does look like a lot of users are coming to terms they'll need to wait a little longer to get their desired return.
180  Economy / Economics / Re: Is There a Lesson for Economies and Entrepreneurs to Learn from Bankruptcy? on: February 23, 2023, 04:46:43 PM
It's the initial money you need to start the majority of businesses, and when there's a economical crisis' going on, less people have that sort of money, and even if they did businesses usually take a lot of your time, and if you haven't got another job at the same time, you'll burn through that money real quick. Since, a lot of people don't pay themselves for the first year or so when starting a business. It entirely depends on the business obviously. If there's high demand for it, then you could get lucky.

However, with some of the examples given in the original post, exchanges aren't cheap to just make, and no entrepreneur will have the bank roll for that or the trust required either.
