561  Other / Meta / Re: theymos! Please use the forum account on Twitter to tweet on: December 18, 2022, 06:26:21 PM
It's always good to have a contingency for events that might lack clarity at first. However, it's not like we've needed it all that much in the past few years. Hence, the inactivity. theymos was quite clear what he intended to use it for.

You are the second person on the forum who admitted it publicly (besides me), although I may have missed that someone else did it too. I respect everyone's personal attitude towards what is currently happening with Twitter, but I do not want to be part of such freedom of expression, and luckily millions think the same.

If someone wants a similar platform, there are many alternatives, you just have to look for them.
I didn't have one in the first place, so that's always a plus. Although, I've seen this sort of response outside of the forum. Twitter will likely be transformed into something very different, whether that's for better or worse remains to be seen. However, a lot of existing users are deleting their accounts simply because they disagree with the political choices being made right now.

I believe Elton John may have voiced his concerns about censorship or misinformation on the platform.

Paddy is maybe not on Conor level of popularity but he is interesting with his figthting style and body transformations pre and post fights.
Only guy that was more popular than Conor globally for Khabib, but only after he beat everyone in his divison including Conor and retired from MMA Smiley
As much as I hate to admit it, Khabib is only so well known due to the antics between him, and Conor. That got a lot of eyes on the sport, despite it being very WWE like. Khabib hasn't got the exciting style that typically entertains the fans. I mean, I've grown a little tired of the crowds booing every time there's a grappling exchange etc.

Conor did a lot for Khabib's image, and he got to come out of that little exchange on the moral high ground. I think this was around the time I was getting into the sport myself, I'm not one of these die hard fans that have been here from the start. The UFC is generally quite new. I for one, hadn't seen much of Khabib before then. Obviously, I've gone back, and watched them now.

Don't extensions, no matter how open they are, create privacy and security issues, especially for those who don't understand them?
Technically, even when you do understand the code, and verify it. You can't guarantee that the new code that you've used, despite being clean, won't be exploited by a potential attacker. It potentially increases the attack service of your browser.

So, larger modifications, and therefore more complex tend to yield more problems. However, the decision solely relies on the user, and their threat model. Plenty of users have modified their browser, including myself.

I will take the global or English language boards, the problems with merits is that they are not distributed enough outside particular boards. I think merits should be a barometer for post quality but we have all seen excellent posts receive little to no merit and on the other hands we have also seen posts most members would not deem worthy of a second glance receive  receive excessive amounts of merits.
Merits are most definitely hit, and miss. Plus, don't get me wrong popularity does still play a factor in that. I think certain users have a real conscious way of distributing merit, while others are much more casual about it. Both are fine, since that's what creates the diversity to allow users to rank up.

I don't know what theymos' thought process was, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was a last ditch effort to shore up the forum, before the removal of signature campaigns all together, because they definitely do contribute a massive factor to the spam problem. I know theymos has previously stated he quite likes the idea of a sub economy on the forum, and I'd probably agree. However, there's a certain point where it becomes more detrimental, than positive.

I do think that the merit system has, and still is correcting the large amount of problems we had before.
565  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 99% of People Will Lose Crypto in Self Custody on: December 16, 2022, 07:10:15 PM
I can not agree with CZ completely. I have no problem keeping my funds in any centralized exchanges only if they can guarantee the safety of my funds. Which they are not capable of doing.
Rather I will keep my funds in my private wallet. And people are most concerned about money nowadays. So I don't think they will lose the only thing which is most important to them.
Not if they have only one backup. I keep multiple backups for situations like this.
Well, you probably do have a problem with centralised exchanges then. Since, they can never guarantee the safety of your coins, and I imagine in their legal terms they go into this in some depth.

Plus, you'd be surprised how many people lose important things, whether it's from neglect or making their passphrases too difficult. It's a slippery slope, and the majority of people have awful security practices.
566  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: December 16, 2022, 07:08:09 PM
Unfortunately, for Dana White; Paddy doesn't have the same sort of persona or skill set as Conor. Conor was so popular because of his loud mouth, but also he backed it up. He usually put people to sleep in the first or second round. If you can last longer than that with Conor you'll probably beat him.

Paddy is a little less eccentric, and doesn't have the same explosiveness in the octagon. He'll still be a star, I'm sure. However, Conor level? Probably not, and that's okay. People like Conor are rare, they're the perfect combination for the fans, and the money counters in the UFC.
567  Other / Meta / Re: Legendary jail: Too fast / overloaded (503) on: December 16, 2022, 07:00:30 PM
I've run into this issue a few times while deleting posts. Although, I always put it down my old laptop that was running on 8-12GB ram, and trying to run several virtual machines at once. Thus, potentially the requests were bundled up together. Interesting that you'd run into it on a normal computer setup. Since, I've now got a better laptop, and haven't run into this problem in a while. Specifically, I run into this when ctrl clicking the delete button. Since, I've removed the prompts.

What exactly were you doing for this to ping up all the time?
568  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: problem with opening after driver update on: December 16, 2022, 06:56:11 PM
If it was a virus, I'd recommend completely securing the device you had it installed on. What was it, was it a wallet pretending to be Bitcoin Core? You should only download from official sources, and verify it always.

Not enough users here verify before installing something. As soon as you execute the program you can probably consider yourself compromised, and since it wouldn't be easy to identify to what extent. It's recommended to take the complete wipe, and isolate approach.

What wallet file were you trying to download?
569  Economy / Reputation / Re: I have spent 100 days of my life logged on bitcointalk! on: December 15, 2022, 09:28:12 PM
I think it's not needed to overstimate such achievement. It's nice thing, but not same like making x number of posts or getting like 1000 merit for example. Not about OP, but it's easy to achieve such thing without doing anything, you just need to keep your browser tab with Bitcointalk open. There is some accounts there with more than 20 000 days logged in and 0 posts. Offcourse, they're bots, it's not possible for real human to achieve such things - after all, 20k days is more than 50 years.
Even then, reaching post milestones is relatively easy, and could be done in a short period of time. I think the better way of measuring someone's achievements would be the impact they've had on others here. For example, there's a ton of users here that are known for what they've done to make this forum a better place. You only have to look at the community awards, and who gets nominated due to their achievements or impact that they've had.

Merit is another way; since that's generally only given for impactful or substantial posts.
570  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: A few keynotes for a serious newbie's. on: December 15, 2022, 09:24:55 PM
No offense — but that's a decent amount of unnecessary buzzwords. Bitcointalk is simply just a community where people just casually talk about Bitcoin/crypto/privacy stuff. I don't get why people take it too seriously as if it's some super professional platform.

Just don't spam, and write legibly; chances are, you'll be totally fine.
It's the money that can be made here that's changed the perception of many users. Instead of being a place where you can discuss about something you're invested in, a lot of users are now here because they want to make money, and might actually not have much of an interest in Bitcoin itself.

As a trade off of this; a lot of users now think that your posts always have to be of the upmost importance, and of top quality. Which, is somewhat nice. However, it's unrealistic to expect every post you churn out to be gold. Instead, users should be posting because they have something to add, whether that's right or wrong. Instead, of posting out of necessity.
571  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Better Ways To Manage Energy Consumption For Casino Centers. on: December 15, 2022, 09:20:17 PM
The amount of money that casino's, at least the very popular ones I don't think they'll be too concerned about the amount of energy usage they have. Remember, a lot of their games are guaranteed profit, so they'll know within a certain margin what they'll be taking in each day.

I'm also not sure why we'd be particularly concerned about casino's keeping their profitability? I imagine, the energy useage would be the last of their concerns, and it's more likely that people start wising up to casino games like slots, and start live sport betting instead, since you aren't guaranteed to lose money in the long run.
572  Other / Meta / Re: How Far You Can Go Without Breaking the Rules? - TEST on: December 15, 2022, 09:10:11 PM
Thousands of reports are sent every year. Many members are unwittingly breaking the rules here. It may be unnecessary for members with awareness like you, but with this topic, I tried to raise awareness by introducing these forum rules to new members in a functional way.

As long as there are people who are banned, we can say that not everyone can make 10/10 Smiley So I hope this thread will be useful to someone.
I like the effort, unfortunately a lot of the rule breakers aren't unintentionally breaking the rules, they just don't care. They're here for one thing only, and that's to make money. So, they probably haven't even looked at the rules, let alone attempt to do something like this.

It's also probably important to outline that a lot of us probably break the rules unintentionally from time to time. For example, off topic posts are almost common place. I think every user does this from time to time.
573  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 99% of People Will Lose Crypto in Self Custody on: December 15, 2022, 09:02:56 PM
And only a fool could lose the private key in their wallet containing their own funds
I think that's a little unfair. Many people lose passwords, banking details. The only difference is there's a safety net with fiat. I imagine a lot of the Bitcoin that was in wallets in the early days has been lost due to mismanagement of their private key. Especially, before Bitcoin made it into the mainstream spotlight, and didn't balloon in price.

I'd like to think that most people now know the importance of safeguarding the private key, but the reality is a lot of people are likely very lapse about it. Just as they're with other things when it comes to the security of it.
574  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is Bitcoin? the origin of bitcoin and who is the proponent of bitcoin? on: December 15, 2022, 08:59:27 PM
To learn the fundamentals of cryptocurrency or Bitcoin, watch a few YouTube videos in your native language. As a result, participating in the discussion here will be easier, and you will be able to learn more. Because learning from the article would be difficult for you. But you've come to the right place to learn about cryptocurrency. Participate in the forum and follow the rules.
The thing is I wouldn't say these are reliable sources. Depending on what Youtube videos you watch, it could be a spool of lies or misinformation even if it's not intentional. So, I'd avoid Youtube videos unless they've been peer reviewed enough. There's simply just too much content out there that's just plain wrong.

Books are generally the best place to start as they've had enough people peer review it. The native language barrier could be a problem in that, but I still think Youtube videos aren't the best place to go about learning Bitcoin.
575  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 99% of People Will Lose Crypto in Self Custody on: December 15, 2022, 08:48:22 PM
I guess he's including people who run exchanges in that figure.  After all, they arguably have the largest quantity of bitcoins in "self-custody".  If we think broadly about the term, that's exactly what exchanges do.  All funds deposited belong to them (users are just unsecured creditors).  They store the private keys for all those bitcoins.  Exchanges are quite literally doing self-custody.  And they don't have a very good track record.  No wonder he doesn't think ordinary people can do it when all of his contemporaries are clearly so abysmal at it.   Grin
Try convincing them to store their Bitcoin with another exchange; its not going to happen. Wallets on an exchange should be a thing of the past now. There's been multiple discussions over the years about it, and I'd agree. It just doesn't make sense. Exchanges should be designed in such a way that you can't store anything on their platform. It's very likely that people start moving onto peer to peer exchanges with the constant downfalls of these centralised exchanges.
576  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: FTX drama stressing people for no reason | How to stay neutral on: December 15, 2022, 08:45:55 PM
What contributed to the Youtube negativity was that the majority of them were all affected and I think the fight was between the Influencers and retailers due to some altcoins SBF invested in and the ones they bought and left on the exchanges, what even makes it worse is that most of the Twitter and Youtube influencers got affected because there life savings where wipe away from their balance in the FTX exit exchange, remember FTX got them with huge bonuses and they all felt for it
They were busy shilling for the FTX exchange, they keep pilling up the bonus but greed didn't allow them to withdraw them and when the exchange becomes insolvent overnight, they all became sleepless with the bear market. One bitcoin remains one, all this market winter doesn't change the narrative of bitcoin.
Unfortunately, these infulencers basically switch their opinion on a penny too. So, while many people probably thought it was good for publicity, and therefore adoption for these to be promoting it. There's always a motive, and it's money. They were directly getting paid for it, and unfortunately their involvement probably hurt Bitcoin more than it helped it.

Since now you've got them apologizing for their involvement, and promoting it. That's going to be there permanently. The NFT craze was mainly down to these Youtubers promoting it. That's the world we live in now though, people don't do their own research anymore, they listen to their favourite Youtuber.
577  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 99% of People Will Lose Crypto in Self Custody on: December 15, 2022, 08:28:52 PM
While he has a slight point, I'm really not a fan of the 99% number, knowing how frequently attacked centralized exchanges are.
99% is probably a sensationalist remark just to grab people's attention. In reality, that number would be much, much lower. Although, definitely a point to be made there.

I think the only case where I'll justify leaving funds on a centralized exchange, is when the holder is a totally technologically-illiterate senior citizen. On the other hand, if the holder is capable of using a smartphone, chances are — he/she is capable of using a Ledger hardware wallet.
Honestly, using fiat with a bank is probably the best idea for these types of people. There's nothing wrong with that, I do think banks get criticized a lot around here, and while I would generally agree with that. Certain circumstances they might actually make sense, and I think the senior person who doesn't want to take responsibility for their own money, and have scam/fraud protection built in; makes a lot of sense.
578  Other / Meta / Re: First forum's post 13 years ago by Satoshi introducing Bitcoin on: December 15, 2022, 08:15:50 PM
I know Satoshi is almost worshiped like a god around here. However, they're very likely a normal person or a collection of normal people, that decided to do something, and that's the difference. Instead, of coming up with a great idea, and not following through. They actually made a product, which you could argue has already changed the world. So, while I do think Satoshi should be idolized for actually doing something, I don't think painted them out to be this all being, and amazing figure is the right way to go about it.
579  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: December 15, 2022, 08:00:11 PM
Just let em fight on until one of them gets knocked down or taken down. I really think there should be more draws given in both MMA and boxing. There's a lot of times when fights are far too close or the judges just get it massively wrong. Imagine losing your unbeaten record just due to a bad ref. Start giving out more draws and make the rematches happen.
I think there should be more draw too. We could still score it by rounds, but Carla vs Thug Rose comes to mind. No one won that fight. It was probably one of the worst fights I've seen, and there was basically no action whatsoever. So, in my mind I was hoping they scored that as a draw, since nothing actually happened. It was almost disgraceful how nothing happened that fight.

I don't see the UFC doing it though. It's very much a win or lose sport.
580  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: December 15, 2022, 03:15:26 PM
Cant believe finally it happened Cheesy He has been in UFC ranking for ages, while being practically inactive. After a loss to Khabib, he had only 3 fights (win against old Cerrone and two losses to Poirier). That is ridiculous. I know that he is a money cow for UFC, but he should not be in rating with such poor and bad activity. Also I would have removed Ferguson. After a win over Cerrone (again him Cheesy), he has 5 straight losses. Such fighter simply can not be top15.
One of the reasons for the inactivity is that nasty leg snap though. Although, obviously he probably shouldn't be in the rankings, we all know that he's good enough. You put him against most of the fighters outside the top five, and he probably wins, and I'm hoping that's what Dana decides to do. Since, putting him against the top fighters is just going to tarnish his reputation further.

It's quite possible with some favourable matchmaking he'll start putting some wins together, and reach some of the heights he was at before.
