1821  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is Linux Ubuntu the most secure OS to store my BTC on? on: June 18, 2013, 02:04:49 AM
Don't know if this has been mentioned, but, if you want your machine to be more secure, don't install Java at all.  Not on your computer or the browser plugin, just don't have it on your computer, and if you do, don't go to random Bitcoin-related websites which ask you to activate a Java applet and then accept it without a second thought and come back and say something like "Oh noes my account is haxx0rd modz plz, plz mods plz"
1822  Other / Meta / Re: Explain why users "reserve" posts? on: June 17, 2013, 08:06:20 AM
Yes.
1823  Other / Off-topic / Re: Xbox One on: June 17, 2013, 07:55:14 AM
Backyard rocks will always have more exclusive games than these machines ever will, and there is no easier platform on which to develop and design new releases. Furthermore, games designed with the rock are highly modifiable largely because open-source code is mandatory. Rocks are not effectively regulated or controlled by any entity or multi-gopoly on Earth.

The wild commercial success of so-called "video game platforms" is only one of many reasons the open-source community has always been doomed to obscurity. ... But we can at least fight.

Onward, Luddite arsons!

This post is amazing.
1824  Other / Off-topic / Re: I got the email few minutes ago.. [XBOX ONE] PRE-ORDERS ARE HERE on: June 17, 2013, 07:54:13 AM
Selling, borrowing or buying used games will be possible - MS has said so.

As for the requirement to connect to the internet, it's a few KBs once every 24 hours.  If your internet goes down for more than 24 hours, just tether your phone for a few seconds.  Surely not fatal?  The benefits are no disc swapping, access your full game library from anywhere and share your game library with your family.

Xbox Live is not free, true, but it's always been that way for what, 12 years?  Sony have finally clocked on and are charging now.  At least this time, MS is offering some serious infrastructure (dedicated servers, etc).

Not being a PC gamer, I only have positive things to say about Live.  It has been rock solid for years.

Do you play on anything besides Xbox?  If not, it's easy to see how you can translate "Has to be always connected" into "Oh, it's just a LITTLE bit, and you could just tether your smartphone if you really needed to", instead of "What the fucking fuck, that's completely unnecessary and limiting."  On PC, you do what you want, when you want to, play however you like, never have to touch the internet if you choose not to (but naturally you will, since the Internet is good), no extra cost for the privilege of using the Internet (though I'm sure you can soften having to pay for a gold account to use Netflix, too), severs are always free and great as they are, and the only extra cost paid is when games specifically need them, and, since you can build with however you'd like, it's unlikely you'll run into such problems as the red ring of death (several times in a row, in some cases.)  Oh, and you can go ad-free on PC, at no extra cost.  On the topic of 360, it's literally embedded into the OS.  Since Windows 8 is the same way with its preinstalled apps, I have no reason to believe the Xbox One will not have ads.  And if you're ok with ads, or all of this, surprise: you're a tool.

The next generation of consoles will be computers in drag.  As will the next one.  And the one after that.  And the one after that.  You may as well just get a normal computer.

Which is actually the purpose of reporting tax deductible donations.

As I said, it would be easier to simply let them be, than to jump through hoops in the hopes of the same effect.
1826  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why so many scammers and spammers? on: June 15, 2013, 01:02:28 PM
Anywhere you find free trade, you'll find Shady Joe.  First time I met a scammer was when I was 12 years old, I think, when I was playing an online MMO called Runescape (back when it was 2D!)  Some guy said he'd improve my armor for free and I thought, hell, that's a wonderful deal.  So I let the guy have it.  And then he disappeared.

The moral of the story is, you're going to run into scammers no matter what.  Learn how to deal with them, and if you're up to the challenge, learn how you can fuck with them and waste their time.  The more saturated any area is with scammers, the easier it is to spot and avoid them.

For example:

Joe's got 15 posts to his name and he really needs 10 BTC IMMEDIATELY LIKE RIGHT NOW, also he wants to pay with PayPal and he can't/won't use escrow.

If that didn't raise 5 blazing red flags, you're better off being around these guys so you'll know why that's a shady deal.
1827  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin... Where is this all going? on: June 15, 2013, 12:56:18 PM
Of those in power:

The unintelligent ones won't be able to adapt and fight to preserve what they have, only postponing the inevitable.
The intelligent ones will takes this time to adapt and preserve their power. Honestly, not even that much intelligence is needed for them to pull that off.

Good point; those who aren't quite so bright will think they have a better chance trying to fight Bitcoin.  But that's like trying to fight the Internet; you just won't win, and from what I've gathered about men in power, they're not very tech-savvy, so I don't predict many will attempt to adopt Bitcoin, or even see why it's the path of least resistance.  The US dollar's a sinking ship, and those who take the time to understand why Bitcoin is so vital at a time like this will persevere in the end.
1828  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Woman 26, bears child to 11 year old boy. on: June 15, 2013, 12:49:08 PM
Is that considered child molestation? If the teacher was a guy and the student a girl, oh shit better watch out.

They'd have to raid the guy's house and charge him for terrorism and dealing drugs, on top of the child molestation charges.  They might even pin murder on him if it's convenient enough.  In this case, meh, maybe we'll let it slide Tongue  Yeah right.  It's uncommon (AFAIK) for women to be child molesters but there's plenty of them in prison.  There's no mercy either way, though western society seems to be more disgusted by male (especially homosexual) pedophiles than straight female ones.  I dunno, straight female pedophiles are almost non-existent in media.
1829  Other / Off-topic / Re: Why is it that a lot of people don't understand what a 'troll' is? on: June 15, 2013, 12:37:56 PM
If there's one thing the various ideologies you are lumping together have in common, its that we are all ANTI-groupthink...is why we're often correlated, we do not keep or want constituencies. Most of us don't give a fuck who belongs to what.

Don't bother explaining it to him.  It's always through one ear and out the other.
1830  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin... Where is this all going? on: June 15, 2013, 12:22:58 PM
The OP was actually asking where bitcoin was heading in terms of economic and world impact, not price predictions.

I blame the post right after Cheesy

In 10 years I predict Bitcoin will be or will be nearly the dominant global currency, overtaking the US dollar.  What kind of implications this will pose, however, I have no idea.  I presume those in power will not like this one bit.
1831  Other / Politics & Society / Re: PRISM - Who else is disgusted by this? on: June 15, 2013, 12:16:05 PM
Where were all you chuckleheads over a decade ago when people were screaming about this? Probably busy marginalizing those people as "conspiracy theorists", because after all the patriot act is only for brown people right?

I was in 6th grade at the time, I think Tongue

... and get tax advantages...

The only advantage to ever come from taxes is the lack thereof Tongue

1834  Other / Politics & Society / Re: When will govt's outlaw cryptocurrencies? on: June 15, 2013, 03:54:51 AM
This is a common question Cheesy  Honestly, if the gov wanted to, and made cryptocurrency illegal, it would put pressure on the biggest businesses to not use it.  It wouldn't kill Bitcoin, but it would certainly stunt its growth.
1835  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How much is my 40k Ripple worth? on: June 15, 2013, 03:08:20 AM
Shortsighted.  If they can truly pull off a decentralized exchange system, then it will replace bitcoin.  No question:

Because then you have:
1) all the benefits of bitcoin
2) a medium of exchange between currencies.

Ripples can be used as exchange fees between those that utilize "trust" with other friends, but it can also be used as a medium of transfer between currencies.

If the Ripple servers are centralized, it won't matter.  The idea of ripple, however, is interesting, and I wish they'd release the source code sooner than later so we can actually do something with it.  Or maybe someone could invent a debt-based system with a blockchain detailing what debts are owed to who.
1836  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-06-14 Bitcoin100′s dilemma: Too many bitcoins, not enough charity on: June 15, 2013, 03:05:48 AM
Do they have any requirements for the charities to be awarded the $1,000 worth of bitcoins?

Also, interesting debate in the comments.

"Note: Donations made in BitCoins are not tax-deductible under current US tax law."

Why would this be the case?

So say you don't want to consider them monetary donations; couldn't they still be non-cash donations?

How does it work if you donate Euros to a US charity?

Beats me.  All these needless rules just so two entities can exchange wealth.
1837  Other / Off-topic / Re: Capitalism (continued from How do you deal with the thought about taxes) on: June 15, 2013, 03:02:24 AM
Mutual aid? You mean, like, I do something nice for you, you do something nice for me? Sounds like capitalism  Grin

Sounds like an open trade to me.  Just replace one side of the barter with cash and you have a clear-cut example of capitalism.  I can think of nothing more unnatural than feeling obliged to help every single person you meet.

Lol. I might actually try it. Know any PPC faucets I can get started with?

Can't help you there, I picked up a few off an exchange but never really looked into it after that.

Check here to see if there's anything that can get you started.
1840  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: A "beginner's" Alt-coin? on: June 14, 2013, 03:17:25 PM
Really? What do you mean by open? Do I have to keep my computer turned on with my wallet open for a whole year?  Shocked

Correct; well, you don't necessarily have to keep it open at all times, but it accumulates more and more (I think) the longer you have it open.  Difference being, instead of a machine constantly hacking away at math, it simply sits there and says, "Yep, the coins are still here."
