Harsh. Does poor judgement close doors so easily for you?

What I meant by that (I wish I could edit my comments instead of reposting Undecided) was do you let opportunities left untouched whenever there was poor judgement involved? What if Satoshi had lied about one of the aspects of bitcoin? Would that make the entire community not worthy and bitcoin a sham? I'm just saying, everything good in my personal life has come from seeking out opportunity despite the presentation.
1882  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Video Series Available on: February 06, 2013, 12:33:57 AM
I tried to get past this, but it just bugs me...

Why the facade?

This being the bitcoin forums where potentially a majority of accounts are sockpuppets of other users, it might be a better question to ask "Why are you so bad at this facade?" instead. Everyone does it.
True.  I'm still gullible/naive enough to believe that most people don't do self-promotions without labeling them as such.

All you need to do is go look at a thread where a newbie is asking for Paypal transactions and you'll see another newbie backing him up like clockwork. I suppose there is significantly less self promotion here than on the /r/Bitcoin reddit though since the userbase is more transparent here and needs to be held accountable for their actions as a community whereas on reddit, they can hide behind down/up-vote spam bots etc.

I'll be letting them know that I find the company to be deceptive and untrustworthy.

Harsh. Does poor judgement close doors so easily for you?

Could you just run 2 clients using different chains and live in both worlds?
Theoretically. But if someone wants bitcoins, do you send them A-Bitcoins, or B-Bitcoins? Don't you have to send them both? If so, if the attacker is intelligent and hasn't pawned its mining equipment, why should they stop at two chains? If you define the maximum reorg as 288 blocks (two days), then the attacker can double the number of chains every three days. A month down the road, you would have to be running 1000 clients just to unambiguously send a coin.

Well, I suppose since it's all software anyway, a single client could be modified to just include all the chains in an array of sorts (not sure what the space/calculating requirements would be for that though) and just automatically update your account as such, and use the chain-specific addresses as you specific from a dropdown (or potentially automatic). Why do I suspect this is the future of bitcoin once the governments get involved? We all agree that they can't stop bitcoin, but governments never really stop anything, they just screw things up, and they do that very well.

That makes everyone who held bitcoins before and through the split twice as wealthy!

I know, right!
1885  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Amazon releases Amazon Coins... reactions? on: February 06, 2013, 12:16:55 AM
I don't think this is a currency...it's just a gift card system really...

I like the fact that they're calling them coins, because when anyone gripes about Bitcoin being used for evil, the question can naturally follow: "why are bitcoins bad but Amazon coins are OK?  What's the difference?"

Any dialogue that follows that line of questioning can only be good for Bitcoin.

That's a good point, kind of like why MintChip is *good* for Bitcoin.

Have you posted it to github?

At that time I hadn't really grasped the importance of open source so everything I had made last year is closed source, one track minded, and for-profit. Having a much different opinion on things now, I think I'd totally want to put it up on gitHub if I ever get back to work on it again.

It was one of my projects last year actually! I hope to have it finished sometime in the future if no one else takes a stab at it first. I hope someone else does though because the task is rather daunting and it will take a lot more dedication than I can spare at the moment  Cry

I joke, of course. But I suppose the people who are actually newbies need to know this sort of thing and the inner workings of the forum.

No worries, I will be tortured for it for the rest of my existence I'm sure, and I deserve every bit of it.

You are right of course, there are some bizarre situations here. For example, people who were running "legitimate" businesses but failed to pay when they were hacked or their own investments failed may also be wearing a 'scammer' tag currently. I wouldn't be surprised to see BFL, Avalon, bASIC, or any other major tech name on the forum sporting a scammer tag here soon if they keep failing to deliver for example. It doesn't necessarily mean someone is out to hurt you, but it does do a sufficient job of making you stop and think twice.

On that note, anyone intending on doing a bet with me absolutely must stop and think twice, and that's okay. I admit my fault and own my mistake.

His ignore banner is showing, Wink  so you know he is worth listening to Cheesy

The ignore banner was commissioned by yours truly because at the time I thought it would be comical to see how many people have me on ignore. Right now it's up to 26+. Before the bet I made, it was only 5. Sad

You are the one who is a scammer, so you ought to know right ?   Embarrassed   Angry  Shocked  Wink

As someone new to this forum, is that title community sourced, or did he manually set it to be SCAMMER as a joke? I can't tell..

It was given to me by Theymos when I made a bet with specific rules that anyone who lost and didn't pay would get a scammer tag, then I lost and didn't pay. Basically I asked for it. In hindsight it wasn't as funny as I thought, lots of people got hurt from it, and I'm trying to make it up to them this year religiously.

I chose this avatar and title.

Perhaps a website where people needed to answer captchas on one end for instant delivery of escrowed funds upon API approval, and on the opposite end a group of sites/services/individuals who need captchas solved for specific services?
1895  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Pizza for bitcoins? on: February 05, 2013, 11:42:57 PM
I agree with the proposal for Bitcoin Pizza Day. As a huge pizza lover, I will celebrate it religiously and buy any other local bitcoiners a pizza!
1896  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: free bitcoin sites, why so low? on: February 05, 2013, 11:30:42 PM
People should have to do some basic work for bitcoins, not look at ads. I might as well start a website that requires you to perform mathematical calculations in order to get a bitcoin payment. Those calculations could be hashing the blockchain. I'd be rich! (I'm joking)
1897  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Anybody recognize this? on: February 05, 2013, 10:41:14 PM
maybe it is not so constant exposure after all ?

this could be interactive advertizing,
u follow bitcoin - they serve you mining equipment adds,

someone else could get adds about weight loss...

Doesn't Google use cookies to bring ads relevant to your searches up? I don't know if cypherdoc's browser choice/settings permit such a thing, but that would definitely explain why I get weird Japanese tentacle porn advertisements on Home and Gardening's website. (Just kidding)
1898  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can CC chargebacks go further back than one year? on: February 05, 2013, 10:38:47 PM
I find it interesting that chargebacks only seem to work when they are in the best interest of the credit card companies. A decade ago the owner of an electronics store in my hometown was hit with an Amex fraud where someone bought $20,000 worth of plasma TVs and had them delivered across the street from the business in a grocery store parking lot at midnight (after hours). Amex claimed that the chargeback could not be done because the delivery was made and confirmed (even though it was a different location).

I lost all faith in credit cards since then.
1899  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Anybody recognize this? on: February 05, 2013, 10:19:21 PM
i think the odds of them being a scam are close to zero.

In what sense? Do you include the scenario that I am also a "scammer" (i.e. defaulting or being unable to deliver even with good intention)?

i'm glad i wasn't stupid enough to have bet with you.  i'm smart enough to have assumed you wouldn't deliver. Wink

I believe you are smart. I just meant, do you think that it's possible BFL could be considered a scam in the sense that they have honest intentions but may not be able to deliver? That is a possibility I have not outruled yet for anything related to ASIC (including Avalon).
