281  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain.info giving me "Chain Head Not Found" Message? on: June 07, 2015, 05:02:39 PM

Yeah I read more of the thread and edited my above post afterwards, that was my bad. I should have read more of the thread originally before commenting, I just didn't have the time, I have to get off here soon. I agree that pushing a buggy update that led to weak private keys being compromised is a pretty bad & negligent flaw. Kudos to the "Good Samaritan" in that thread returning some of the BTC to bc.info and to blockchain for trying to return it to users.
282  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain.info giving me "Chain Head Not Found" Message? on: June 07, 2015, 04:57:03 PM
...

coinableS, M.Z. and snarlpill

While I do have faith in the trustworthiness of blockchain.info -- they paid me back BTC I had transferred out from my wallet there (but they do not hold my private keys, so, ahh, ahh...), I have noticed that they DO have problems on a pretty regular basis.

"Buggy"

What this tells me is how important it is to have the bulk of your BTC in cold storage.

My latest purchase using BTC was directly from my Trezor.

I definitely agree with you on holding the bulk in cold storage. You should never have all of your wealth or spending money in a service dependent on outside factors (down time, maintenance, hacks, etc.). Trezors or similar or just securely generated paper wallets or multi-sig, Bip-38, etc.
283  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain.info giving me "Chain Head Not Found" Message? on: June 07, 2015, 04:46:09 PM
What do you mean by that?

Blockchain.info has pushed buggy codes earlier and there was also a few security problems but they compensated all people who lost money due to it.

Example: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=581411.0 - If the Bitcoins went to a wrong hand, I don't think these money would be returned.

I checked out your link and it seems everybody that lost Bitcoins had used CounterParty's CounterWallet and their private keys were exposed due to a bug in their code. I saw someone that had a blockchain.info wallet lost like 12 BTC, but they said they had used CounterWallet from CounterParty and their private key had been stolen through a bug in that wallet. So it doesn't seem to be blockchain's fault in that case, but I admit I definitely did not read that whole thread. I believe you could find more examples though, but I haven't personally had any bad experiences with blockchain.info.

Edit- I did see a link to Reddit in that thread where bc.info admitted they had pushed a buggy update that did not fully generate private keys securely. They did say they tried to reach out to users who were affected and that it was less than 0.0002% of their user base. Nevertheless a bad mistake though, I agree.

What do you mean by that?

EDIT: And by me saying I trust them, that is just my personal opinion, I'm not telling everybody to trust them. I am not BTC rich anyways and always keep bigger amounts on paper wallets to save, but I have held BTC with them for a little while now, no problems.
285  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain.info giving me "Chain Head Not Found" Message? on: June 07, 2015, 04:16:27 PM
@HelpMySituation-
You need to try and relax a little bit man...  Lol I hope most of your posts in this thread weren't actually serious.

I'm getting the maintenance message when I try as well. They've updated their Twitter with this:

"We're activating maintenance mode again to investigate a database issue. All funds and wallets are secure."

As I said earlier in this thread, I trust their security. They've had many BTC experts work for them and look at their systems including Andreas Ant. & others. I'm sure they will have it back up ASAP.
286  Other / Off-topic / Re: Deep Web on: June 07, 2015, 02:50:11 PM
Sadly, it doesn't appear to be on Netflix anymore. I got really excited when I saw that and tried to watch it but I think they've already cycled it out of the Netflix queue.

And I wasn't extremely excited to hear Keanu Reeves narrate it, I just like the guy I guess, and better than yet another movie narrated by Morgan Freeman.  Wink
287  Other / Off-topic / Re: Deep Web on: June 06, 2015, 10:57:24 PM
^ I'm sure he was just posting generic BS to raise his post count...

Thanks for reminding me about the Deep Web documentary though, I had forgotten about it and now I'm really excited to watch it! Narrated by Keanu Reeves too, I didn't know about that. That's awesome and I can hear it in my head right now. I might have to stream it or rent it or something...
288  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTS] Casascius, Cryptolator, Lealana, Microsoul ***Prices lowered*** on: June 06, 2015, 09:13:16 PM
The MS64 MicroSoul for 0.19 includes shipping, correct? I might need to jump on that.
289  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain.info giving me "Chain Head Not Found" Message? on: June 06, 2015, 06:52:58 PM
Thanks for the responses guys, I checked out their Twitter it looks like nothing to be worried about, in my opinion. I keep any extra amounts of BTC I have on securely generated paper wallets but I import into blockchain.info whenever I need to spend, and I've kept some amounts on blockchain.info's systems for almost 2 years now, no problems. I trust their security, just hang tight guys (and use paper wallets when possible) I'm sure they'll get it back up soon. Plus they're US based so they wont be able to pull a "Mark Karpeles" so easily and get away with it.  Cheesy
Maybe they had to restart their Bitcoin client or something.
290  Economy / Web Wallets / Blockchain.info giving me "Chain Head Not Found" Message? on: June 06, 2015, 05:28:06 PM
Hey everybody,
I keep a small amount of BTC in a blockchain.info wallet and have never had any problems; I think their service is pretty safely protected but that's a side note. But anyways when I logged into my wallet a minute ago on my phone and just now on the computer it's giving me a red "chain head not found" message. I'm not worried or concerned or anything, but does anybody know what that means? It made me think of all the talk I've heard lately about Bitcoin XT and block size, and a possible fork in the future to a new blockchain. Could any of this have any relation? I'm guessing the "chain head not found" statement is referring to checking the blockchain for newest blocks & transactions. The computer loaded my wallet but still gave me that message. I had just never seen it before so was curious about what caused it and figured I'd ask you more knowledgeable Bitcoin users.

Thanks in advance for any info. and answers
291  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hold on....you can buy things on ebay now....with Bitcoins! on: June 06, 2015, 01:33:24 AM
I think the Gyft site/app is awesome and you can find gift cards for a pretty wide variety of places. Plus you get 3x points for every card bought with Bitcoin. It is not a significant amount but it adds up over time and is a nice little discount bonus.

I was bidding on an eBay auction for a Chinese silver Panda coin recently and won the auction. I then got on Gyft and was able to buy pretty much the exact amount I needed on an eBay gift card, in $5 increments. Bought the card with Bitcoin and had it in my account instantly, no confirmations needed. I used the card when buying the item and the whole process from winning the auction to paying with the gift card only took like 4 minutes. So that was def. a good experience in my book. I will add here that Gyft had a little note saying to allow up to 4 hours for the card to show up in ebay's systems, however mine was credited instantly when I typed the code at check out.

With physical stores' gift cards you can either print them out or just whip out your phone and have the cashier scan the bar code in the Gyft app. I've used it to buy a few packs of smokes at CVS when in a pinch. (now CVS stopped selling tobacco products, oh well)
292  Economy / Securities / Re: [NastyFans.org] NASTY MINING | POOL | COINS on: June 05, 2015, 11:07:07 PM
Hey I was curious what do NastyFans member think of the fork and the Bitcoin XT stuff ?

Their double-spending policy is idiotic. Double-spending is a feature. They might as well accept "first seen" blocks too. That shows their lack of fundamental understanding of what Bitcoin is about.

The Bitcoin protocol is not about first come first serve. In fact Bitcoin should not give a damn about time. If sh*t like that ever makes it into official Bitcoin protocol, Bitcoin has no future.

Damn nonnakip, that sounds fucked up about double spending. Could you link a good, unbiased article or thread you've seen about it so I could read it? Every time I've looked at the "Bitcoin Discussion" section or other Bitcoin news sites recently all I've seen is people bitching about it both ways and in almost every thread/article. To be honest it just kind of made me avoid all those threads and not want to read about it, especially because there is so much FUD posted about both sides, conspiracies, and tons of shill/newbie accounts posting it. I know it basically stemmed from the block size debate and Gavin mentioning "Bitcoin XT", but I haven't been following it much.

I've been avoiding it like I do with anything that has the words "Bitcoin Foundation" in the title.  Cheesy
293  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gavin's Pump and Dump Scheme Exposed on: June 05, 2015, 09:43:51 PM
Yeah, actually, he would ... people will do anything for money, obviously.

As noted already, the OP of this thread is a known scammer/con man/liar.

And I'm gonna go ahead and say you are a possible alt of moriarty, the OP, because you are promoting his BitPlastic scam in your signature and personal message. I don't think anyone but moriarty & his many alts promote his scam sites.
294  Economy / Services / Re: [BIT-X.com] Earn Bitcoins by Posting | Signature Campaign on: June 05, 2015, 08:45:26 PM
Woah, hey @marcotheminer- I changed my signature as soon as I saw your notice to add the new sigs. I just checked the Bit-X signature campaign site and it said "signature deleted!" and all of my posts/stats were missing...

I started this week's post count at 956 posts. Could you please fix this for me? I never deleted my signature, only updated it when you asked us to.

EDIT: I tried a couple other users' UIDs from this thread and their stats showed up just fine on the stat site. I don't know how that happened to mine.

EDIT 2: I got on my computer and just copied and pasted the new signature again into my profile information, and then checked the stat site and everything's on there again for me. I have no idea why it did that the first time, but I was on my phone the first time so maybe I missed a word or something when I copied/pasted the new signature. All is well now, and again thanks to marco for running such a solid campaign.
295  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Kialara Physical Bitcoins/HAVEN: Update on: June 05, 2015, 07:20:25 PM

Wow, nice! How were you able to get 1st Edition Kialaras with "One Bitcoin" engraved at the bottom instead of "100,000 Bits"? Yours could possibly be a more valuable rarity if no others like it exist...
296  Economy / Services / Re: [BIT-X.com] Earn Bitcoins by Posting | Signature Campaign on: June 05, 2015, 06:59:19 PM
Also changed my signature. Pleased to be able to be a part of this solid campaign.
297  Other / Meta / Re: question about activity on: June 05, 2015, 03:46:47 PM
if an account has been inactive for a while like 8 weeks, if it starts posting again can it get the 56 activity it could have got in the time or only 14?

It doesn't work like that, and for good reason. If it did work like that everybody could create 10+ accounts and then just let them sit for a year or so and start posting again and become a Sr. Member or similar instantly. You have to post during every 2 week period to get the activity increase.
298  Other / Meta / Re: Account - Banned - No reason on: June 05, 2015, 03:27:33 PM
What exactly constitutes a lifetime ban here on BitcoinTalk? Sending malware or other malicious files? I'm just curious about this.
299  Economy / Auctions / Re: Auctioning Netflix Lifetime Account! on: June 05, 2015, 03:23:30 PM
Can you post here, in this auction thread publicly, how exactly you plan to provide a lifetime warranty? Anybody can say that, it doesn't really mean anything unless you have a proven way of providing this extended warranty.
300  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: ===►Maidak scammed me 400$ BTC,this time is for sure===► on: June 05, 2015, 12:13:26 AM
C'mon Maidak, you really gonna be this stupid? Stealing customer money will result in charges for fraud, operating an unlicensed money service business, money laundering, and tax evasion. The few thousand or so that you may get from this exit scam will become $10,000 to $100,000 of fines and legal fees, and probably time in jail. Not to mention that the reputation you squandered was worth hundreds of thousands of dollars of business.

If he goes through with this I honestly think he must have a serious drug problem.

Why do you believe that this could possibly end up with him owing tens of thousands in fines?

Are you saying that you have the proper license for trading bitcoin?  I'm not sure of anyone that really does on the forum yet... so wouldn't they fall under the same thing (minus the fraud part)?

He probably means something like this: customers that do their trade successfully and get their money are happy customers. Customers that get their money stolen in a trade are unhappy and much more likely to raise a stink and cause issues like alerting authorities.
