nice setup - though will get very hot and noisy around mining time ...
can neaten it up - but you will also find that the throttling will happen faster than normal due to the accelerated heat build up - being so close to the wall ...
It's a work in progress. It will have two large 10 inch fans adding fresh air from the left side. Oh, and there will be two of those guys ventilating the whole workshop: ... but I'm still negotiating with the landlord about exact date/position on walls, etc...: Yep, more work needs to be done.

Ooooo! Very nice! Gonna get real hot in that room real fast! LOL - winter will be great!
Yeahyeah, although I'm not going to mine 24/7 with those GPUs. I'll rather create and test mining software you guys can use. That's the goal. Also another important usage: When fully equipped this rack will be comprised of 8 x 8 CPU-Cores that I want to use for faster compilation/build time, e.g. by using distcc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DistccYou won't believe the amount of time I waste just waiting for some compilation process to finish. This needs to be improved. Looks great. So tidy!

Behold, it's time for another episode of GPU ("Gear Porn Unlimited"): Built a 2-story shelf, each floor holds 4 motherboards, one floor for AMD-GPUs, the other for NVidia-GPUs. A selection of NVidia-GPUs and PSUs should arrive soon...

@georgem
How are the core upgrades coming along?
Nearly finished with them, will release a new wallet very soon.

I wonder... is mining spreadcoin worth the electricity?
For me it seems the project which started as ultimate "spread the coin", became the ultimate "concentrate coins"
No pools, actively killing attempts to make pools. All this achieved is removing small miners from the project, concentrating the hashrate into 3-4 big farms. Who can use "private" miners
Please explain me where am I wrong...
This coin is about decentralization. Pools pose a threat to decentralization, that's why we are actively fighting them. We are and want to stay a GPU coin as long as possible. It's pretty easy right now to mine a few SPR even if you have an "average" GPU. Now, the best way to fight the big GPU farms is to mine with even that 1 GPU you own! If you need a pool first before you start contributing whatever small hardware you have, then it's not something we can help you with.

though im curious as to how your cooling works with the gpus so close together ...
If you look carefully in the last photo you will spot the pedestals of 4 big fans. I guess he just blasts his installation full frontal from one side. that would only cool a percentage of the heat dissipated - as the heat is actually blown out to the extremities of the cards ( either end ) ... what ever was done - its obviously worked ... but my curiosity gets the better of me - always ... as pedestal fans cannot be the only things cooling this setup - they are just not powerful enough ... #crysx I used two similar fans in my bitcoin setup, they are very strong... if you position them correctly it should do the job. It then also depends how the whole room is ventilated ofcourse. (how the accumulated hot air actually leaves the room, and how colder air is reintroduced) So: 1) every GPU has a fan 2) big 60 Watt Fans pointed at the whole installation. 3) room ventilation All those things have to come together if you plan to operate such a setup for years.

Keep up the good work Georgem!!!
I'm on it! Thanks.

It is strange that you ask such questions as Bud is only today learned about mining ...
Just trying to have a nice conversation here, lol...

good info, guys, thanks. What is this cable/adapter called that allows you to use all 6 PCIe slots? I mean because the slots are too close together on the board. PCIe-Riser? EDIT: I need some of those or PCIe-extension cables...

Please tell me how to remove the limit on the 4 connecting the wallet ? How to start 5-6 rig?
p.s. already found: By default you can mine only from 4 machines to the same wallet, to increase this limit set rpcthreads to value greater than 4 in spreadcoin.conf. =)
May I ask what your 5-6 rig looks like? What are the exact specifications? How many mainboards are you using? 2 GPUs per Mainboard? Some photos would be awesome. Thanks.

I think this is a very interesting project and I'm looking forward to the release of some services If I understand it correctly, there's only one developer working on this project - georgem. Am I correct? Is there any plans on-boarding at least one more developer to the project or will georgem handle it all by himself? I'll send a small donation to georgem for positivism Currently I'm handling practically everything. Yes. "Competitive collateral servicenodes running a decentralized blockexplorer" is my brainchild, so ... everybody's waiting for this pregnancy to come to fruition. And no, I don't need help with that. But once it goes online there will be much demand for additional brains to dissect and optimize it. As I reported earlier, I now have much more time and money to concentrate on Spreadcoin, should be enough for a few months, but any donation is absolutely welcome (and necessary) to pay for my recurring expenses and make it last longer. So thanks a lot! PS: I don't know... are there any devs out there who have time to devote themselves to cryptocurrencies and who DON'T start their own coin? Anybody willing to create an android wallet for SPR?

agreed ... especially if you are really only looking into light mining compared to heavy usage ... and free? ... i missed that bit ... free is the best kinda - ummm - anything ... ... #crysx Yeah my little brother dropped by with this bag full of GPUs... and I was like ...what the hell! lol So i now have 3 different AMD models, and I will look to gather more advanced AMD and also NVidia GPUs over time. I believe that SpreadCoin could become THE GPU-Coin!

the amd miner couldnt compile properly on my systems - and the devs at the time didnt WANT to get it right to compile on every system ...
Weird that the devs didn't want to help in this situation... A reason more for a principled dev to look into this.

those cards are VERY noisy and VERY hot when mining - and when it comes to power - at about 300w per card - i think you have been totally misinformed mate ...
i sold ALL of those style of cards to get 'a little more powerful - a little less noise - but just as much heat' cards for replacement ...
afterall - i was one of the guys that pushed the hashrate up that high at the time ...
#crysx
Yeah, with overclocking and maxing them out all the time you get what you describe. I'm not interested in all that, and I'm not gonna complain about GPUs I received for free... Nobody misinformed me. Also, I am sure that nothing will get close to the heat and noise that those Bitcoin miners generated. It was outright "dangerous" at times, weird monstrous ASIC machines created by this sketchy swiss/italian firm that went bankrupt sometime later ( http://bitmine.ch/). Atleast with the GPUs you know that you have giant corporations with experience behind it.

I'll see if I can source any parts you need.
Sure, I'll take anything, what I currently need are PSUs and NVidia-GPUs, ... and also donations! Thanks!

LOL - Congratz! Oh - get ready for a big power bill if you haven't mined before! Be careful - the first power bill might knock you out! Ofcourse, ofcourse. During 2014 I ran 2x 800 GH/s Bitcoin miners, which needed 2 KWatt an hour. (about 300 CHF/EUR a month). It was not possible to do anything else in my workshop while those monsters were busy. It was too loud, too hot, etc... If I read the specifics right, those GPUs will need less power, and also be more silent, less hot ... Also, currently I'm not interested in making any profits through mining, I just want to gather as many different GPUs as possible for testing purposes. (looking at ebay and ricardo) I'm missing NVidia cards...
|
|
|
The only thing I'm missing are a few PSUs.... and the OpenCL Experiments can enter the next stage! Damn that's a jackpot. I still need to get a GPU so I can begin mining. What are the OpenCL experiments? Newb Alert It's a C/C++ framework to program AMD (and also Nvidia) GPU's. Basically I want to create my own mining software, and improve it towards SpreadX usage. This will also facilitate future forks.

Today is a lucky day. ...
It's a lucky day for YOU. Now we are NEVER going to see any service nodes... Nonono, everything ties together.... what "dev" would I be if I didn't do a little mining on the side? Plus: Mr. Spread's algorithm is just too bizarre not to spend a little bit more time studying and subsequently improving it. (Pool preventing etc..)
|
|
|
Today is a lucky day. My younger brother gave me 6 older AMD-GPUs he doesn't need anymore... (they are from back in 2013/2014 when he did some scrypt mining) Not the fastest GPUs, but not the worst crap either (I hope atleast). Much better than what I already had. I have to check all the mainboards/CPUs/RAMs that are lying around here in my workshop, and put them to good use... The only thing I'm missing are a few PSUs.... and the OpenCL Experiments can enter the next stage!
