401  Other / Meta / Re: Maximum Ad Slots Per Person on: September 12, 2012, 12:00:29 AM
i was just trying to be fair to the others

when inaba and I were bidding like mad men a lot of people were voicing opinions that they were afraid they would never be aloud to have an add again

I have no problem paying high prices for ad slots, Ive paid probably the highest prices for ad slots with the exception of this week - going back maybe 8 weeks and theymos can testify to that

I was just trying to think of others thats all.
402  Economy / Auctions / Re: Advertise on this forum - Round 50 on: September 11, 2012, 11:55:55 PM
i started a poll in the meta section about only allowing a maximum of 2 ad slots per person
if you want to vote go here:

403  Other / Meta / Maximum Ad Slots Per Person on: September 11, 2012, 11:53:53 PM
Hello

If anyone was around for the great shoot out of Advertising Round #49 they would know that 10 advertising slots were sold to one person for around $2500USD (for a week)

I personally was one of the driving forces of that high price which if you were there , you know the price was basically driven by pride.

I usually rent 4 slots per week but one certain person was not going to allow that to happen, phallic/star wars references were made and hilarity ensued, and now BFL will be advertising us on all 10 slots for a full week.

Now I am all for the forum getting money, but as I was thinking about this, its really not fair to the little guys who have a right to advertise their business too. I mean I could of bid right a long with him and  got my slots but there are a lot of people around here who dont have the means to do that but should be allowed to advertise if they want to.

I could understand if the price was driven by supply and demand but it wasn't it was driven by pride, ego, (im guilty of those) and the desire to monopolize.

I propose that each person can only get a maximum of two slots
and to ensure that the forum still makes money, each slot should have a minimum cost of say 2 BTC

Thats my piece.
Tom

404  Economy / Auctions / Re: Advertise on this forum - Round 50 on: September 11, 2012, 11:39:25 PM
i have to admit , I got some sort of sick thrill from jacking the price up to $2500 and then sticking him with it... Tongue

It made me feel like I was on storage wars

I am going to suggest this in Meta but I think it would be appropriate for future auctions to have a maximum amount of advertising slots a single person can have.

what does everything think?

Quote

Kano, I don't want to badmouth Tom or his accomplishments but honestly, his offering is not really competitive to our products.  Our price and performance are far superior in every category so it's not really an issue. I'm glad he's putting out his offering to give people a choice though, but in the end, it all comes down to money and profit for the majority of miners, not ideology.  Do you really think $230 is worth losing over 30% of your hashing power and consuming an enormous amount of power in the process?  You might think so, but most people won't.  Heck, you'd probably make up that $230 in the first few months in power savings alone.

Hi,

I really do not wish to engage in an argument, and to be honest I do not have a problem with BFL or Inaba and would love to keep things civil at all costs.

However a portion of this quote is a lie and it is wrong of you to do this as I never spread mis-information about BFL in my thread.

"and consuming an enormous amount of power in the process?"

You have absolutely NO CLUE the energy efficiency of my bASIC mining device (it is extremely efficient, and uses less electricity than the ModMiner Quad) and I have serious doubts that you even know the exact energy efficiency of your own device(s)

Furthermore the bASIC mining unit offers a minimum (un-optimized) 27Gh/s of Bitcoin mining speed which will very likely increase substantially with proper firmware and software integration once I get these units into the very capable hands of the Bitcoin communities best and brightest developers.

Now, I do not have the man power, or resources to equal that of BFL I admin that, but The reality of the situation is, the bASIC unit is very good competition for your mid grade SC Single unit and could meet or exceed the speed and/or energy efficiency of that device, and at this point it could not be proven otherwise.

I very much want to keep this competition friendly but we do not want to go down the road of trying to lie and spread mis-information about eachother. As I am sure you would agree it would not be good for either of us, so lets just stick to the truth on both sides until we actually have the cold hard facts ok Inaba?

thank you.

Tom

SECURITY UPDATE:

I am happy to announce that I have purchased and installed an SSL certificate with full sha256 encryption from TrustWave SSL,  so all your activities on my site including financial transactions are completely safe and encrypted and as a matter of fact you are now forced to use https instead of http for everything.

I hope this addresses everyone's security concerns that they had in the past. Which by the way I thank you for bringing to my attention. With this new level of security there will be no need to bring back google checkout and I will stick to my new credit card processor Stripe.com, whom is very well respected and trusted in the payment processing industry.

no no ASICS arent shipping until November/December we are currently shipping FPGA Based units

BTW;

Our website will be down temporarily, I had to give it it's own Dedicated IP address in order to install the SSL certificates, so while DNS servers are clearing their caches around the world you may not be able to access the site for awhile. This should all be remedied soon.

thanks!

In hindsight, I no longer see this bet as being funny and I think it was in horrible taste. The community members who were my friends who are standing up against this are right in doing so I and I have no place in the bitcoin community as I clearly don't take it as seriously as everyone else. I am happy to have learned so much from Bitcoin and I'm glad to have shared in many experiences as well, but I cannot discount the claims that I have some issues with manicism as there is no other explanation for my often irrational behavior. I'll be seriously looking at my life and exiting from the community with my sincerest apologies.

Mihai Alisie will be speaking for the Bitcoin Magazine at the London conference. I am in the process of exiting the company completely equity and all in addition to already having resigned as a director and Editor in Chief, as it seems the right thing to do for the future of the magazine.

Ellet's IP is being handed over to a more capable party and I will be exiting any involvement with it.

DCAO is being dismembered and the existing heads will start another organization a bit more seriously toned.

I will not be involved in any businesses in this community any longer. It is clear my immaturity is hurting the community more than I am helping it, and the position I have been in has only resulted in hurting myself and those around me. I'm glad to see that many people did get my joke, but I ask that they not defend me as even I see now that it was crossing all sorts of lines that should never have been crossed and I have absolutely no excuse for it.

I'm sorry I let so many people down that I never even realized actually cared and I hope I can somehow serve as an example of what not to do so that all of this was not a complete waste.

I will now leave how I came.

I knew you were not going to be able to pay this bet, however I thought the community would just slap you on the back and say its alright son, dont worry about it - you just keep showing us animated gifs of horses heads and everything is going to be alright.

FWIW: Of all the more "popular" (for lack of a better word) people on this forum your one of the few that I actually liked.

Good luck with your future endeavors and enjoy the walk of shame; dont let it get you depressed - somethings are just not meant to be.

take care

ModMiner Quad UPDATE!

We have a NEW Firmware which has some exciting new features!

* WORKING Temp Sensors!
* Less HW Errors!
* Faster Mining Speeds!

You can Download the firmware here:

http://btcfpga.com/files/firmware/modminer.bin

To update the firmware you will need to follow this procedure.

Plug the modminer backplane into power source but do not plug into usb

Take two small pieces of bare copper wire or something similar

using the diagram:

Look for two boxes that say Reset and ISP on the sides of them

they each have four contact points around the boxes

use one piece of your bare copper wire to connect one of the contact points on the bottom of the reset to the contact point at the top of the reset and hold it there
(the led should dim at this point)
then while holding the first piece of wire take your second peice of copper wire and attach the bottom contact point of the ISP box to the top contact point and hold (if you did this right the light will stay dim)

at this point you can first remove the wire on the reset connections, and then after that release the wire that was connecting the isp contact points

if it worked your led will still be dim

now plug your modminer into your usb port on your computer, wait a few moments and it will be displayed as a flash memory device "CRP DISABLED"
you will see a file named firmware.bin - please delete that and then copy the new firmware file in it's place. You will not need to rename it to firmware.bin the chip will do this for you automatically
when this is completed simply unplug the usb from your computer and use one of your bare copper wires to connect the bottom contact point for RESET to the top contact point for RESET and remove the wire. In a few seconds your LED light should start blinking again to indicate the new firmware is loaded and everything is fine.

cablepair, can you answer my question? If you say that you don't want to, that's fine for me (I will not ask again), but please either answer or say you don't want to.
(You can also answer via PM, I'll keep it to myself, if that's worth anything to you)

I'd like to know the answer too please.

Regards,

M

The answer is simple. I never claimed to have a single chip that could do 27Gh/s, this is achieved through multiple hashing cores.

Also some more updates ....

in case you did not already know this - Manufacture of these Cell ASICS is already underway

We are working on the finishing touches of our board design and plan to produce a very small batch of release candidate boards to send to the following developers, some of which are currently employed through us and others who are just receiving units to help bring a wide spectrum of mining software support.

bASIC Development Team:

Luke-JR (Firmware/ Mining Software)
TheSeven (Hardware Testing / Mining Software)
Kano (mining software)
Ckvolias (mining software)

when the firmware and mining software is ready to go - we will move on to pcb fab, board assembly and last but certainly not least -shipping to customers...

Also I am happy to report that we are working out a deal with one of our competitors to supply these asic chips to them at a reasonable price to them , so that they may use in their own mining unit designs which strengthens the network and the market.

Sorry if this has already been asked, but will it be possible to run something else on these ASICs, such as some password cracking ? BFL said their ASICs could do it but they purposely disabled this feature so as to not run into export limitation.

this would be possible with our device however you would likely need new firmware for the MCU chip which is something we would not be able to provide.

FYI:

I have purchased a premium EV SSL Certificate (green address bar thingy) Tongue with the full encryption

Had to fill out a bunch of paperwork and send them a copy of my DBA etc

as soon as its approved (hoping early this week)

it will be live.

Thanks to everyone who pointed this out to me.

cablepair, can you comment on this whole fab thing? (especially what "ttul" said)
Can you? Wink

Hi Tom,

Can you also help us understand how you've funded development up to this point. I've heard that at 130nm process, just the mask and shared wafer run could be upwards of a couple hundred thousand dollars. How have you come up with these funds?

Thanks,
gigavps

What you have heard is absolute bullshit, and what you are trying to do is absolute bullshit. Trying to act all nice while at the same time discredit me. Guess what James you are not the all powerful judge and jury of the Bitcoin community, and this whole passive aggressive crap you are trying to pull is really annoying.

Not that it is any of your business but this  bASIC project was partially funded by a very well known lender in the Bitcoin lenders syndicate and partially by profits from ModMiner Quad sales.

To other people you just look like a shill to BFL but the truth is people these are personal attacks from gigavps it has nothing to do with BFL, infact I am cool with BFL. Gigavps and I have had problems with eachother for months, and he is personally going out of his way to cause me problems.

I manufacture and sell high efficiency Bitcoin mining equipment. I have been doing so for months, the ModMiner Quad has done very well in sales but is a product that will soon become obsolete. This is the next step in my business to bring it to the next level with a Cell ASIC SHA256 hashing core.

Now James Gibson (gigavps) everyone knows you don't like me. Everyone knows your opinion in this matter, you have expressed it and I am going to let it go without further reaction. However please keep this in mind for your future posts both in this thread and in others. I am not going to be bullied by you anymore and I am not going to allow you to commit Slander and Defamation against myself and my business any longer. You are spreading information that you have no proof of simply to discredit me and my business and in your state of Florida and my state of New York that is criminal libel and is a first-degree misdemeanor.

Nothing would please me more than to see you as a defendant in court, but I am willing to move forward - you expressed yourself and your opinions and that is fine, but if you continue your slanderous remarks to try and discredit me and harm my business I will move forward with legal action. I am not joking.

Well I guess we all know who has the bigger swartz.

You can have it.

(no offense to the forum) but I can probably find better advertising than this for $2000+ a week.

Congrats Inaba, its been fun! Smiley

ACTUALLY...

now that I have half of the advertising slots im starting to think I need a nice even number

10 LOOKS REALLY NICE.

so lets re-bid!

10 @ 20

420  Economy / Auctions / Re: Advertise on this forum - Round 49 on: September 08, 2012, 11:13:28 PM
im not sure, the reasoning behind my bidding was to get half of the advertising slots
just like inaba is insistent of having the majority of advertising slots

I know poor theymos is just trying to keep the peace but now that we have 10 slots I still want half of them

5 @ 20
