801  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - Secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: June 15, 2014, 01:15:04 PM
I've been searching and can't find a solution here. Anyone have any idea as to why upon synching I get the below errors?
In particular, why is there "ric" after the /Users/ directory? I'm on a Mac and that is not my user name, so the /Users/ric directory does not exist.
(I've removed the wallet.bin file and restarted everything, new seed and all generated, but this didn't seem to help.)
I started by double clicking on bitmonerod and then once synched, simplewallet, which were downloaded from Github. (I was unable to install via the command line instructions.)

Thanks
IAS

rpietila, what do you think will now happen when Wall Street started trading Bitcoin. Do you think it's good or bad?

Good initially. Bad over the long run. Good initially because they'll pump the price getting in. After that, they have a million tricks to play.

They certainly have a million tricks - manipulating news, huge liquidity to move the price, etc. But, there is the rest of the world involved
here, and no derivatives, naked short selling, etc. which they no longer have at there disposal - I get the feeling once BTC gets going, there bag of
tricks will be much smaller.

But, ass long as they have "the" or "a" reserve currency at their disposal, they can certainly make things extremely
ugly. Buying and selling huge amounts to make BTC very volatile (like we have not yet seen) is a worry. They might be able to effectively neuter it.
Could you imagine them buying the complete order book up, then dumping everything? When you can print money, why not? When you can hide
behind countries, people, etc. why not?
But I think rather than that they will try to utilize it...

Re tricks: Would you pay dollars for a contract to be able to sometime in the future, not to receive a certain weight of gold, but to receive dollars for that weight at the current gold price? That is essentially the paper gold market. Maybe you would, because you can not buy a bank quality gold bar, divide it in parts, keep them for a while, sell one part to someone in India, another part to someone in China, without incurring cost for storage, protection, transport, regeneration and assaying. You also get, with paper, near perfect liquidity.

But would you do the same with bitcoin? Probably not.

The paper gold adds volume to the physical gold, and thus depresses the price of gold. I'm quite convinced that paper bitcoin (in the gold paper sense, not paper wallets!) will be offered, but will not play an important role.

We are talking about something Disruptive in BTC. We all know how powerful, manipulative and dangerous, etc. the derivatives market is. My hope is that the disruptive force spawns more disruptions, which I think is a given. Little Black Swans are among us... (And the event horizon is short, hard to see imo.) I don't think it can be easily steered, at least past a point in time. Sometimes those in control, only think they are in control, and when they realize they are not, well, then they are not. We seem to be approaching that space in time.

I don't see bitcoin as the solution. It is still money and if it exists in 50 years or further into the future, I think we will have failed as a species. But, it is a destabilizing step in the right direction. It gets us questioning what money is and such. That is more important than BTC imo. Taking away the power of others to create our realities. I am very open to a money that just acts as an exchange, and can in no way give you power over others. Perhaps that is just understanding, but in the interim it might be time based or involve other "stepping stones".

To answer your question, I will not get involved in contracts and that form of speculation. Not being evasive, I'm just saying it doesn't much matter to me. The quicker that profiting/manipulative system is gone, the better. I'm glad in a way that we at least have a chance for some change. I am, or rather was, extremely familiar with the manipulated precious metals markets, but still have something resembling hope, but not exactly that. Maybe trust?

As Terrence McKenna said, We are a part of Nature, we come from it. Just as an apple tree apples, the Earth peoples.  Shocked
And to think that we can actually guide it, is a bit illusory (or something like that).

Difficulty will go to 100K...

I just looked at the chart, and 100k might not be seen for a few more months. August, I could imagine 500.

I noticed this error message. Why is there a User call "ric"? That isn't me, or is that just the default path?
Also, that is not any of my IP addresses, just checked.

which is the source of your binaries ?
obviously that's not your IP, that's the peer you're communicating with.

On the page before I asked a question about my wallet. (bit more detail there).
But, my binaries were downloaded from Github as a zip and then I moved the files (after first setting a password and 24 word seed). I'm running the bitmonerod and simplewallet by having double clicked on the downloaded files. It seemed fine till an hour ago.
In my other question I was worried about having moved the source files after setting the password and seed. Perhaps that is why? Though it seems my .bin files are still in my home directory.

Thanks,
IAS

Anyone watching Monero (XML) lately? Wow, it has been up to almost .005 BTC. There are rumors of Mintpal implimentation, might be a part of it.
Thanks to those who mentioned it, started picking some up at .0026, bit more at .0038-.0041. I feel ok in this range.

4 day chart.

I downloaded the source for Mac from Github.
I downloaded, then copied over the blockchain.bin file into my home directory (That is where I found it, I guess from when I first started the simplewallet or bitmonerod executable.)
It synced up fairly quick and I started simplewallet. I see the "help" command gives me the commands possible.

Now, yesterday afternoon before I got the blockchain.bin file copied I ran one of the above two executables and it asked me for a password and 24 word seed. Did that. Since then
I have moved the monero.mac.x64.latest directory with executables, etc. into my applications folder (from downloads). That doesn't seem to have hurt anything. Outside of moving a few
coins into my wallet (not done yet), can I test that my 24 word seed is still ok? I don't see any documentation here beyond the help command. Any ideas guys? I would like to make sure my wallet
is running ok, as the command line version of a wallet is a bit new for me and I want to be careful and also would like to delete it and restore it for when I actually have my coins in it. Instructions
or ideas greatly appreciated.

BTW - I am running/starting everything by double clicking on the executables from my finder window.

Thanks in Advance,

Don007, nommot is right about the security of the Api Keys. I leave mine on MyAltCoins since i trust the security of the servers. Many people trust me with their keys, and as i said multiple times, I will never use their api keys for personal gain. My name is easy to find from my username, and I stand behind MyAltCoins.

Of course I totally agree (and encourage) being a bit paranoid about your crypto assets.

NEW FEATURE: You can now export your transactions to Excel!

So cool, helps on taxes possibly!
810  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Apple Approves Bitcoin Wallets on: June 14, 2014, 08:52:09 PM
I cannot in any way understand why anyone gives a flying fuck about what that dying dinosaur of a walled garden does. With the way they operate as a company they ought to be completely irrelevant in this world  Angry

You have a very unusual definition of dying dinosaur, as Apple is both growing and profitable.

Maybe I'm underestimating peoples joy of being sodomized.

Android hosts 99% of mobile malware and even flagship android phone buyers are often left out on upgrades.  The android upgrade problem is do bad the majority of android devices are out of date.

So who is getting fucked more?

Apple does a very good job at screening their apps against malware, apps with "hidden" charges and useless apps (one example of this was the app that cost $999 and was basically a bright picture of gold, and literally did nothing). In the process of doing this they also censor things they do not like. It is somewhat of a tradeoff.

I was pretty pissed, like most were, when Apple wouldn't allow Bitcoin Apps on their ISO devices. Clearly many were extremely upset and started to even destroy their IPhones.
That said, what you hit on is bringing up an important issue - Security.  I have yet to buy a Smart Phone, as my Ipad is enough of a time waster, though useful at work.

The latest I heard on a podcast (Think it was Epicenter Bitcoin) is that Apple is allowing wallets but might not be allowing Apps that allow the buying and selling of Bitcoin. (Local Bitcoins, Coinbase? Correct me if I am wrong).

So, this battle might just be getting started. I can see Apples perspective if they are being careful legally. But if it comes out that they are being self interested
or the like here (which doesn't look to be the case with the latest bans), then they just opened up a mountain of problems.

Its about sharing

I think part of the issue is consumer protection and part of it is they do not understand Bitcoin fully.

Since bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed once confirmed by the blockchain (and really once they are sent to the network) if a person makes a mistake or is scammed then they are simply out of luck. I think that a large amount of bitcoin related thefts have more to do with social engineering and less about security. Apple likely wants to tread lightly before allowing people to download an app that could potentially hold thousands of dollars of a user's money that could be stolen and would be no way to reverse a theft.

Thanks for the explation. Funny, I am unhappy with some of the apps I buy, some don't work well or at all, albeit rarely. I never even get a reply. I think apps should come with a 1 hr trial or the like.

I am author of brew formulas, what OS X version? Can you try with "-v" flag and post details?

Thanks for your help. It is 10.9.3

I would like to move my coins off the exchange for obvious reasons but I'm having trouble installing the wallet. (No .dmg on Mac?)
As I'm not super computer literate these days can someone verify the error (and solution) here?
I was trying to install the wallet. (Or is there another one on Mac?)

It looks like it is MacPorts/Fink related. (Not sure how to even check)
Here is the first try, below the 2nd after "brew update". (Thanks in advance)

Code:
Warning: It appears you have MacPorts or Fink installed.

I am really really shocked and impressed with that wallet. Not super intuitive but a live decentralized exchange right now, just wow.

IAS

We had live decentralised exchanges quite some months ago prior to NXT's, where have you been?

LOL - Listening to podcasts, researching btc and making music.

It is hard to imagine what this space will look like in a few months to years.
I mean what if the tax agencies start wanting/allowing alt to btc transactions to be tracked? The decentralized exchanges put a damper on that.  Grin

I installed the NXT Wallet. Wow! This is interesting. A decentralized asset exchange wallet and more. Gonna be fun to check this out.
Where is there more information on Qora, etc? I'm wet behind the ears here.

Thx in advance,
IAS

Qora asset id is 2950240446121913764

You go to Asset exchange, Add Asset button at the top right corner.

The Qora asset is operated manually by Dzarmush, look him up on Qora thread.

I wonder if the asset exchange has better overall prices than an online exchange. Anyone do any price comparisons?

I am really really shocked and impressed with that wallet. Not super intuitive but a live decentralized exchange right now, just wow.

815  Economy / Speculation / Re: rpietila Wall Observer - the Quality TA Thread ;) on: June 13, 2014, 09:10:01 AM
i think it depends on the method of how the sr coins get sold.

Explained here:
http://www.usmarshals.gov/assets/2014/bitcoins/

Crony auction at its best. Too short notice for anyone with BTC to attend. Until next monday I am supposed to have created a bank account in the U.S., and have transferred 100% of my anticipated total bid amount into it in USD, the proceed of the bitcoin sales that I have made in the space of this few hours/days?

Sorry. This is going to achieve exactly what was intended. Almost no bids, and the ones rock-bottom. Bad publicity, resulting panic selling. Bitcoins of the people going to the hands of banksters cheaply. But really - what else did you expect?   Roll Eyes

That is an interesting take and I gave the sale little thought. But why would the government do the auction so quick? Would they want to receive top dollar?
As usual, seems like they are up to no good.

It will be interesting to see the results of the auction and if they give up who the buyers are, which I doubt. I'm sure other government agencies will be hiding behind fictitious names here...

Regarding the price action yesterday and today. The move down had huge volume and the bounce up seems to be light. I'm afraid this is just a bounce.
That said, I think big money does not let this sink (for any lengthy time anyway) below 550 ish. Flash crashes are very hard to enter on, and I think
that will be the low points. I highly doubt we see lengthy sideways action down low. Big money probably going to protect it's investment.
816  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: June 13, 2014, 09:03:46 AM
the issue is long solved and was much smaller than expected.

I think the biggest advantage of counterparty protocol is that you do not need to go the way btc-> nxt -> asset. you can simply buy the asset with btc.

the "currency" (xcp) of the protocol has a completely different function. it can be taken in escrow on the blockchain (until now impossible with bitcoin). It will be probably in short term be used for betting, mid-term for CFDs and long term as insurance.

BTW I used NXT AE and I was quite impressed by the easy to use functionality as well as the speed. kudos.

Ok, if the issue was solved, that's fine, I actually liked XCP when I used it in its early stages, although it was quite buggy then, until NXT AE came along. XCP can survive, at least as long as Bitcoin survives, but you always have to worry about 51% attacks and such. With NXT you just don't have those worries and time between blocks is much shorter, so trading is closer to centralized exchange speed of trading.

FIAT->BTC->NXT->Asset will soon be shortned to FIAT->NXT->Asset, as there are fiat gateways under way, that's just a matter of time.
Then I am looking forward to
FIAT->NXT->Asset->Qora! Smiley

817  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: June 13, 2014, 08:31:20 AM
Would you still feel that we need more than one cryptocurrency if there was a sidechain that supported ring signatures (2-way exchange rate peg / bitcoins freely flow on and off the sidechain)?  Or what if we could create anonymous tokens pegged to 1 : 1 with BTC using Gavin's recent Oracle idea?

Sidechaining is possibly unscalable, centralizing, and insecure. Aside from that, I would prefer to operate in a blockchain that has complete obfuscation from the start, rather than later, as you're going to run into the issue where authorities are going to be staring at the ledger and examining closely every movement into and out of the private chain. This activity is publicly visible for the Bitcoin blockchain and sidechains.

I think a good question to ask might be: if you already had a cryptocurrency with high privacy, would you need to append a sidechain to it that didn't?

This is my problem as well with putting all of our eggs in one basket. It is not that side chains, tree chains, etc. do not serve a function or won't even be successful, as I think they will.
My problem is if anything goes wrong with BTC, then we will be SOL in one big gigantic way. We need not only other coins that are in no way connected to Bitcoin, but we need other
technology. In this way I'm talking about NXT, Ether, etc. in that if there is a flaw in BTC's code or inherent design, some other coins won't go down with the ship.

Also, it is a very real possibility that one large coin can be attacked by a State(s) due to "National Security" reasons, but of course it will be "banking" or "corporate" reasons as is usually the case.
Don't make their job any easier. In the future, I foresee different Crypto's being able to interact with one another, if programmed as such, much like Side Chains, etc. will do with BTC anyway.

I think it is a very wise decision to take maybe 3%-10% of your Crypto Assets out of BTC and put it into a variety of coins such as MRO, NXT, Ether. This acts as both a hedge/insurance as well as a bit of an expansion beyond our current event horizon. It MAY limit profits, or it may actually magnify them, but that isn't really the issue imo.

818  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Apple Approves Bitcoin Wallets on: June 13, 2014, 08:11:27 AM

Bitcoin's Horoscope for week of June 12, 2014 - Darkcoin's too

Haggis is a Scottish pudding. According to the gourmet food encyclopedia Larousse Gastronomique, it has "an excellent nutty texture and delicious savory flavor." And yet, to be honest, its ingredients don't sound promising. To make it, you gather the lungs, liver, small intestine, and heart of a sheep, put all of that stuff inside the stomach of the sheep along with oatmeal, onions, salt, and suet, and then simmer the whole mess for three hours. I'm guessing that your work in the coming week may have a certain metaphorical resemblance to making haggis, Bitcoin. The process could a bit icky, but the result should be pretty tasty.

So far right on target! LOL
Hopefully we recover a bit here and the "tasty" begins.

Thanks Otoh,
IAS
