1061  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Alpha Technology Litecoin (Scrypt) ASIC Miner Development on: January 20, 2014, 08:59:39 AM
I really hope this enterprise fails. Asics would ruin scrypt coin mining, like they ruined bitcoin mining.

We need what is best for the currency, network, technology, etc. and NOT what is most profitable for the miners (of which I am one!)

Leave the "It's about ME" sign at the door, and take part in the largest social experiment in our history.
May what is strongest and most anti-fragile win, that will serve the people the best,

Have any of you guys seen what this guy is doing with low denomination tradeable BTC's (Numisalis).
http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/numisalis-physical-bitcoin

This is a really interesting design, coins are scan-able (tags inside), private key is in the middle of the coin and the coin must be broken open to get it out. Really designed as a usable tradeable off block chain BTC.
Hard to explain it all. I hope his campaign is successful. He has a short 2 minute video explaining things there.

No affiliation except that I gave 60 bucks to campaign and would love it to reach the goal!

This is a really interesting idea and looks like a great design (technically) and beautiful artistically.

I put in for a few of the little guys.  Grin

Come on guys, get the word out there!

1065  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Can Zerocoin be mined yet? on: January 14, 2014, 07:59:49 PM
Zerocoin is out as of yesterday I think.
So I imagine mining is a reality now?
1066  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: hash rate mania on: January 14, 2014, 09:49:59 AM
Mining BTC is such a joke now, what a massive waste of electricity from these oh so efficient ASICS.

That is a pretty narrow perspective. There is a point to having an extremely strong network.

What about banks, and the electricity they use, people they hire, gold and securities they store and all the $$$ they spend?
What about cars idling at traffic lights, dirty emissions, etc. It is all around you and BTC, relatively speaking, is NOTHING.

Since BTC is an "online" entity, we can easily lose sight of the fact of the value in mining. But it essentially secures the network.

Perhaps we create another algorithm that is more "productive" but that brings up other problems...

1067  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain.info - Bitcoin Block explorer & Currency Statistics on: January 14, 2014, 09:02:44 AM
With Blockchain.info it allows you to see the current balance based on your import addresses. (Under "receive money")
But BTC's sent out are not included in the figure.
Is there a way to see a summary of total deposits made to each address?

(Basically, I'd like to compare different addresses (which are from different mining ventures).

Thanks in advance,

Does the drop down transaction filter do what you need?  (show just the transactions you want to see)

Thx for the reply but
that is the first thing I checked (and where the functionality should be added, quite easily I would think.)
The choices under "My Transactions"/"filter" include: All, Sent, Received, Escrow.   Nothing else.

Under "Receive Money", it lists only BTC's in your account, not historically. Putting a "Total Coins received to this address" choice here, makes sense as well.

Unless I'm missing something...

So, "Feature Request" please - This would really help tracking things for us.

My apologies, it is there, not as a summary but on a per address basis. All you have to do is click on the Address Name under Receive Money. It will give a total as well as current received.

Hope that helped someone!

I don't understand why people still ask for btc38. From my point of view anything involving Chinese characters will have a close to 0 impact on cryptos after January 31 , so why even bother?

I'm not sure that we really understand what is going on in China. My bet is that there will continually be ways to bring money into the exchanges there.
It really just appears as if the Chinese Government is trying to slow things down related to the Cryptocurrencies.
The alternative is that they are not outright banning them, but just trying to make it impossible to bring money in, and I don't believe that is the case.
But, time will tell.

BitcoinEXpress - I guess never say never. The timing of the move was funny, like 1 day after starting this thread, but I'm sure just a coincidence.

1071  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Alpha Technology Viper Scrypt Miner List of Orders on: January 10, 2014, 08:56:17 PM
Has anyone actually contacted Dexcel Designs to confirm their alleged partnership?

Why not just look on their website and see it as news before asking?
Come on people, it is getting crazy with the hate here.

I apologize, you're right. It was the very first article in their scrolling news frame though and I must've missed it.

Anyway, it's not hatred, just plain scepticism. A £405 deposit for the 5 MH/s is not an amount I can really afford to spare in case this thing turns awry.

No problem being skeptical. I still am. At least we don't have to put the full 1350 pounds down. So hopefully they have a working unit before final payment!

I actually wouldn't have put the whole amount down, just too much of a chance. I've been bit by BOTH Avalon and BFL, but got a refund from the former.

But these guys will take more of your deposit the longer it takes them to ship! So if you get tired of waiting after nine months pass, you're screwed. If they even are around to give refunds at that time. The policy isn't even legal, anywhere that I can tell, but people keep giving them money.

There is no comparison to losing 30% of your money and 100%.
I will take the 30% chance. As I've said before, this is a special experiment to take part in. If the owners are genuine (and time will tell), we are behind them and we go in this together.
Also, substantial progress has been made with ASIC's, so even though they are applying it to LTC, we have some history helping us out now.

1073  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Alpha Technology Litecoin (Scrypt) ASIC Miner Development on: January 10, 2014, 05:47:00 PM
i really dont understand this...

right now you can buy 0.7MH for $400 and hash right away using radeons.  That's $600/MH (adding on power supply/motherboard etc.. cost), and you can always sell the radeon cards later on to recoup a good portion of the cost even if litecoin goes to 0 or difficulty skyrockets

this miner cost $320/MH, with at least a 6+ month wait, risk of being fraud/delay, for <50% saving?

my question is...why?  why would anyone take such high risk for so little reward, instead of just using the money to buy video cards and start mining tomorrow instead...

Is it purely electricity savings?

makes...no....sense.

Just to add to what the two other posters have already said,
do the math, I'm in Germany and pay .28 KW/hr. Two AMD R290 video cards would use 600 watts and cost me 150 Euro in electricity a month and put out 1800 MH/s.
The 5MH/s unit uses 100 watts of power. So, per MH/s, an R290 costs around 400 Euro (just rough cost, plus the computer) and then 75 a month in electricity.
So, 20 bucks a month or so for the Viper vs. 440 bucks using 5.8 R290 cards (plus hardware), yes, 1/20th the energy and 2X the performance.
Think about that...

Ah, so the reason why my Bitminter balance and future fields are the same with no unconfirmed BTC's, is because there are no blocks being found. Yes, I'm a newb!

Anyway, the week started off great as I had mined more with my 80Gh/s than I thought, and today, seems to be on the same number as yesterday...

i can´t get this miner running with my r9 290. any advices?

error v2:
Code:
smelter v0.2 (c) Smolen
Royalty: 1/10
Failed to read source file: ./quark0td/kernelQuark.cl
SummonProgram failed
clCreateKernel call failed!

error v3:
Code:
smelter v0.3 (c) Smolen
Royalty: 1/10
Failed to read source file: ./quark0td/kernel/kernelQuark.cl
SummonProgram failed
ThreadHost::Thread() unexpected exception:clCreateKernel call failed
Smelter doesn't work with Hawaii (290 or 290x) GPUs yet.

Any idea on when we might get Smelter working on the 290's?
(I will be using my CPU for Quarks and the 290 for LTC until then.)

Greetings Miners!

We are less than a day away from closing our pre order books, everything has been going smoothly and our engineering teams have already started to ramp up development! In Bangalore we initially had one team devoted to this project, we now have over 4 experienced teams working on various aspects of this project including ASIC design, Host Mining software porting on ARM controller, Mechanical design , certification aspects (CE/FCC) and WebGui in parallel, so we can fulfill our timeline and product promises. As of now we are targeting end of Q2 as our delivery date. A detailed plan will be published in due course.

Note. Pending payments will be allowed 7 working days after closing time to complete any pending order payments.

The innovative team in Manchester is devoted to guiding the engineering efforts in India, updating the community with our progresses, and all customer support. Our team is actively growing rapidly to deal with our loyal community and to show a great deal of transparency into this project. Our updates will be very regular, at the least weekly and we will show customers every aspect of design and production that is happening.

We have also updated our management team profile on our website to let you know of the people behind this initiative and thus bringing more transparency.

You may check the below link on our management team, along with responsibilities and position of each member:

https://alpha-t.net/about-us/team-2/

Stay tuned for more updates.

Well, I would be absolutely pleasantly shocked if you guys make the end of Q2. Talk about creating a reputation, you will be #2 behind KNC.
Make it happen and good luck.

This is great news. Let's see how the government now reacts. Hopefully they allow them a way in. The following weeks and months will be huge here. The Chinese government should be explicit regarding funding, instead of pushing the exchanges into a corner. But then again, it may create another Torrent like solution  Grin ...

1080  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [QRK] Quark | Super secure hashing | CPU mining on: January 09, 2014, 05:42:02 PM
So after reading about the potential 51% attack on bitcoin. It's good to know quark is more secure because of CPU mining. I think people will finally understand how quarks actually stand out and why our mining period was so rapid.

Quark CPU mining insure that each individual able to securely defend the network and protect it.

I'm not sure that is completely true. The problem with Bitcoin and a 51% attack is more about the pools than about ASIC's, though there is something of a potentially centralized problem with ASIC's, yes.

Who has more mining pools, Bitcoin or Quark? I am pretty sure BTC has MANY MANY more pools. So, what that means is, due to Quark having fewer pools, it is even more important to watch for a 51%
attack. You can have good people unknowingly mining in a bad pool - with no idea of the pools intention. I think the Gigahash.io double spend thing is exactly that.

I would suggest some form of protocol for pools to follow that doesn't allow 1 to have more than 25% or some smaller arbitrary amount. A large holder of ASIC's (or CPU's) could still control a few pools in the same way though, so we need to work on this. For sure a single point of failure.

I am a holder of both Quark and BTC, with the latter being much larger than the former. But I have to be honest here, the best Crypto's should win as this is about the people, not the money (per say.)

I mean that as a solo miner. Average people are able to start mining without specialized hardware like ASIC if a pool starts to get close to 51%. While bitcoiners have no power unless they own ASIC hardware to help the network. This is where quark beauty shines.

I don't know. A pool consists of many individual miners. Therefore they can switch or make the pool even with 50%+ act with the protocol.

Well, if I want to support the network ASICs would be nice, true. But this is not only a disadvantage of Bitcoin. How many computers do I(or one entity) need to infect to get 51%. And with Quarkcoin?

I'm pro Quark, but just thinking about weaknesses in any of the coins I hold is a good practice. A weakness of CPU's are bots. If a competing coin saw Quarks as a threat, what is to stop a fairly wealthy individual from buying some mining bots on Quark (huge amount) and try to get control of the network via a pool then? Not sure how expensive it would be on Quark but stranger things have happened when money is the goal, unfortunately.

Not that I think this would happen, but its good to be ready in the future for any form of attack.
